(1883 - 1941) Pavel Nikolaevich Filonov nació el 8 de enero de 1883 en Moscú. Su padre murió en 1887,y su madre se dedicó a lavar ropa para mantener a su familia. Los niños trabajaban tambien, incluso Pavel, el más joven, ayudaba a sus hermanas a bordar toallas y a venderlas en el mercado.A los 6 años empezó a bailar ballet en los pequeños teatros de Moscú para ganarse la vida. En 1896, su madre murió. La hermana mayor de Pavel, Alexandra, ya estaba casada con un ingeniero bien situado. Su marido se llevó a todos bajo su tutela a St. Petersburg y les dió una educación decente. Pavel, que ya había mostrado un interés hacia la pintura desde los 3-4 años de edad, empezó a estudiar arte. En 1901, se graduó y realizó trabajos diferentes. En 1903 intentó entrar en Bellas Artes pero suspendio los examenes de acceso. Realizo estudios privados con L. Dmitriev-Kavkazsky durante 5 años. Durante ese periodo Filonov intentó de nuevo el acceso en la Academia de Bellas Artes tres veces, pero nunca lo consiguió.Durante los veranos viajaba por el Volga, El Caucaso y Jerusalem, y realizo muchos dibujos del natural. En 1908 fue admitido por fin en la Academia de Bellas Artes. Sus trabajos llamaron la atencion tanto a los estudiantes como a los profesores pero su estilo no academico no era conforme con los standards academicos, y fue expulsado por influenciar a los estudiantes. Filonov protestó esta decision del rector Beklemishev, y lo volvieron a admitir, pero al cabo de dos años abandonó la Academia en 1910. Se inclinó hacia una explicación teórica y racional del arte. En 1912 publicó el artículo (El Canon y la ley ), donde explicaba los principios del arte analítico por primera vez. El talento de Filonov como orador público y su profundo conocimiento de la historia del arte le ayudaron a extender su teoría; su conferencias eran muy populares y atraían a mucha gente....
