Martyn Bennett - Griogal Cridhe (Glen Lyon's Lament)
From Martyn Bennett's 'Glen Lyon' Both very sad, and very beautiful at once. 'Griogal Cridhe' is a lament written by the sorrowing wife of Gregor MacGregor, after his beheading in 1757. This tune was sung by Martyn's mother Margaret Bennett. I think you will find, that even if you do not know Scot's Gaelic, you will still be deeply moved by the emotion put forth in this lament. © Martyn Bennett / Cuillin Music

Anacoustic Mind - Griogal Cridhe
This powerful, passionate lament was composed by the sorrowing wife of Gregor MacGregor (a relative of Rob Roy) who was beheaded in 1757. "Dearest beloved one, they spilled your blood yesterday. They put your head on an oak stob and left your body lying..." The violin weeps with the voice as she pours out her heart, beating her fists on his grave. The song is written as a lament but was also sung as a lullaby to her child. Gregor was executed, apparently as a result of machinations of his wife's family who wanted to marry her off to the Laird of Dall to cement a political alliance; but the Lady wouldn't play along with their schemes and thus started another of the Cambells' feuds.

World's 5 Smartest Con Artists
World's 5 Smartest Con Artists - as part of the news series by GeoBeats. Con artists come in all varieties - from the ones who sell you world famous landmarks to others who take away your retirement funds with a smile. Here are 5 of the world's greatest con artists: Number 5 is Frank Abagnale, a former con man who cashed phony checks worth $2.5 million in every US state and in 26 countries. In addition, he impersonated as a pilot, a college professor, an attorney, and a doctor. Steven Spielberg's film, Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks is based on Abagnale's life story. After serving a prison time of 5 years, he has been working with the FBI on combating check forgery for almost 35 years now. Number 4 - Victor Lustig. Born in Austria-Hungary, his first con involved selling a fake 'money box' which could print $100 bills. He was able to fool the rich and wealthy into buying the box for a price as high as $10000, sometimes even more. In 1925, Victor was even able to sell the Eiffel Tower to a French scrap dealer for $70000. Number 3 - Gregor MacGregor posed as the ruler of a fictitious country in Central America called Poyais. He was able to convince investors and immigrants into buying land in his imaginary country. Gregor backed up his story with a guidebook containing details on Poyais. Between 1822 and 1833, over 200 settlers sailed for Poyais, only to discover that it was nothing but a fake country. Number 2 - George C. Parker. This con man ...

Poyais Land Nicaragua manfut
The Land of Poyais On the 22nd of January, 1823, over two hundred would-be settlers set sail for Poyais. Here's the story of the real Never-never Land, in which there was no Peter Pan or Tinkerbell, but there were alligators, albeit most likely sans timepieces. There's a book about this place, the title of which is 'The Land That Never Was' and which was written by David Sinclair. Despite the title, it was a land that was -- and still is for that matter -- only it wasn't what it was supposed to have been. Incidentally, we know there were alligators in that land, because on the 26th of April, 1823, a Scotsman was seized by an alligator whilst attempting to swim across the lagoon -- maybe he was wearing a watch? The central character was a cross between Harry Flashman and Richard Sharpe, except the real name of this real person was Gregor MacGregor. He was a Scot who was born on the 24th of December, 1786, or as the legend on his portrait tells us, 'General Gregorio MacGregor'. The fact that he became a General is the least amazing thing about MacGregor. He often referred to himself as Sir Gregor, though he was never knighted, and at one point, he styled himself 'Gregor Mac Gregor, Brigadier General of the armies of the United Provinces of New Grenada and Venezuela, and General in Chief of the armies for the two Floridas, commissioned by the Supreme Director of Mexico, South America, &c.;' A soldier of fortune, this son of an Edinburgh merchant was also a fraud. In April ...
