John Willis Baer

Dr. John Willis Baer (March 2, 1861 – February 8, 1931) was an American official of the United Society of Christian Endeavor. President of Occidental College in Los Angeles (then a Presbyterian school) from 1906 to 1916. In 1919 was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.

John Willis, nicknamed Bac Guai John in Cantonese, or White Devil, is an American mobster linked with the Chinese Mafia in Boston and New York. Willis claims to have been the only white person within Chinese organized crime, an assertion backed by FBI agent Scott O'Donnell, who stated he has "never seen" a case like that of Willis.

Early life

Willis was raised by his mother in Dorchester in the 1970s. His father left the family when John was 2 years old. Following his mother's sudden death when he was 14, Willis was left to live by himself.

Criminal career

While working as a bouncer at a bar in Boston frequented by Chinese crime figures, Willis intervened in a fight on the behalf of Chinese gangster, Vapeng "John" Joe. As thanks, Joe gave Willis a card with a number written on it and told Willis to call if he ever needed anything. Soon, broke and needing a place to stay, Willis called the number. He was taken to a home occupied by the Chinese gang Ping On. Multiple reports state the Willis was "adopted" by a Chinese family linked to Ping On.

John Willis (bishop)

The Rt Rev John Jamieson Willis, CBE, DD (8 November 1872 – 12 November 1954) was an Anglican bishop, Bishop of Uganda from 1912 to 1934 and subsequently Assistant Bishop of Leicester. He and William George Peel, the Bishop of Mombasa, were accused of heresy during the Kikuyu controversy.

Biography

Born on 8 November 1872, he was educated at Haileybury and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He was ordained in 1895 and began his career with a curacy in Great Yarmouth. Then he began a long period of service as a CMS Missionary in Africa eventually becoming Archdeacon of Kavirondo before his elevation to the Episcopate in 1912. In 1934 he returned to England to be Assistant Bishop of Leicester. He died on 12 November 1954.
