The move had followed Simarjit Singh Bains declaring himself as an independent candidate against party nominee and cabinet minister, Hira Singh Gabria, in Atam Nagar constituency from Ludhiana. SAD president Sukhbir Badal had summoned the Bains brothers and warned them to withdraw from Atam Nagar constituency. Since the brothers rebelled by not following the diktat, the disciplinary committee of the party decided to expel the two.

Ludhiana's small shop owners not scared of FDI
The shop owners in Ludhiana in Punjab are confident that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail will not affect them. CNN-IBN travelled to Punjab's boom town Ludhiana to see if retailers and consumers there are wary of FDI or are ready to embrace it. Ludhiana is no stranger to organised retail, mega malls and modern merchandising. Multi-brand retailers EasyDay and more have an established presence in the city. Some small shop owners feel FDI in retail would do no harm to them. Pradeep Chopra has a small corner shop off the city's main arterial road, but he does not feel threatened. His lower range customers he says, have no use of the malls. "If someone wants Rs 5 worth of sugar or Rs 5 worth of tea leaves, would he get it in a mall? He will come to us," Chopra said.

Date: Saturday, 31st March 2012. Time: 11:49 AM. Location: Jammutawi and Kathua section of Northern Railways, J&K.; Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ-35. Legendary 24 coach superfast of NR, 12472 JAT-BDTS Swaraj Express curves and rolls over the Basantar river bridge with the power of twin LDH WDM-2 Alco locomotived in charge, one of the loco was transferred from TKD shed, later BRC WAP-4E took charge from Ludhiana Junction. The pantry of Swaraj Express is really good, the food which we got for the dinner was hot and delicious :)

All buses stood lined up at the bus stand. Mounted police patrolled the streets even as shops remained closed. "We wanted to go to Bathinda after visiting the golden temple, but now we are stuck here. We are quite distressed as we have no way to go back," said a harassed passenger. "We have problems with buses, don't know how to get from one place to another," said a youth waiting at the bus stand. People could be seen at the bus stand waiting for the buses but there were none plying. The normally bustling streets of Amritsar wore a deserted look with padlocks still on shutters and no shops open. Police vehicles were deployed across the city to prevent any untoward incident. Petrol stations too remained shut with attendants sitting by and reading newspapers. In Chandigarh the Himalayan Queen train was stopped by BJP protesters at Baltana near Chandigarh. Following it the Chandigarh bound Delhi Shatabdi too was halted between Ambala and Chandigarh. BJP-HJC combine launched protests in several parts of Haryana with Hissar witnessing a complete shutdown. Protesters took out rallies through the city. Ludhiana in Punjab too witnessed a complete shutdown with all shops closed and police deployed across the city.
