William S. "Bill" Todman (July 31, 1916 – July 29, 1979) was an American television producer born in New York City. He produced many of television's longest running shows with business partner Mark Goodson.

Early life[link]

Bill Todman was the son of the legendary and highly respected Wall Street accountant Frederick S. Todman, CPA. The Accounting firm was known as Frederick S. Todman & Co. and for many years was located at 111 Broadway, located next door to Trinity Church. Frederick S. Todman & Co represented some of the United States biggest companies, including The New York Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange, Polaroid, Eastman Kodak, Chase Manhattan Bank among many others. Frederick S. Todman lectured in post WWII Japan as part of that country's economic reconstruction and wrote several quintiseential books on Wall Street Accounting. Todman's brother Howard was Vice President and Treasurer for Goodson-Todman Productions.

Game shows[link]

Todman teamed up with Mark Goodson for radio shows. According to radio historian J. David Goldin, among their early work together was the show Treasury Salute, a program syndicated by the Treasury Department which honored military members. They later collaborated in producing game shows for radio, then moved into television, where they produced some of the longest-running game shows in history. Their many shows included Beat the Clock, Match Game, Password, The Price Is Right, To Tell the Truth and What's My Line?. Though both men created the programs, Todman gradually became less involved with the day-to-day operations of the game show business and moved Goodson-Todman into a bigger business strategy. Todman was the genius behind diversifying Goodson-Todman into the newspaper, radio and real estate businesses. The television business was lucrative but not nearly as much as the other businesses in which Todman invested, which earned millions. Goodson continued to work on game shows while Todman expanded the company. It is believed that Goodson-Todman would never have survived the roller coaster of the television business, including the slow period for game shows in the late 1960s had Todman not been aggressive in expanding the company into other ventures.

Death[link]

Todman died two days before his 63rd birthday, on July 29, 1979 in New York City as a result of a heart condition. Goodson-Todman game shows that were still running at the time continued to be billed as "A Mark Goodson — Bill Todman Production". In the early 1980s, Goodson acquired the Todman heirs' share of the company. Child's Play, which premiered in 1982, was the first show to be billed as simply "A Mark Goodson Television Production."

Todman was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2011.

Bill Todman's son, Bill Todman, Jr., is a successful film producer who has produced more than 20 major motion pictures.

Richard Wayne "Rich" Fields (born November 30, 1960) is an American broadcaster, spokesman, announcer and meteorologist, best known for being the announcer of the American version of The Price Is Right from 2004–2010.

Fields is currently a part-time meteorologist for the CBS owned and operated television stations KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, California. Fields can also be heard on the radio on K-EARTH 101 KRTH and on KNX-AM in Los Angeles.

Early life and career[link]

Fields was born in Bay Village, Ohio and raised in Avon, Ohio, before moving to Clearwater, Florida in 1976. He graduated from the University of Florida Gainesville in 1983 with a degree in broadcasting. While attending this university, Fields was diagnosed with both testicular cancer and lymphoma, both of which he survived.^[1]

He has had a 32-year career as a radio personality, including a ten year stint at KCBS-FM in Los Angeles, and can still be heard at times on K-EARTH 101 KRTH in Los Angeles. In his early career, Fields worked as a show host and announcer at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Fields is a well-known voice-over personality and has done hundreds of television and radio commercials. In 1995, Fields became the announcer for the Florida Lottery's Flamingo Fortune television game show (a Goodson Production) and held that position for three seasons.

In early 2000, Fields returned to college at Mississippi State University to study meteorology and later became a television meteorologist.^[2] After an internship at WFLA-TV in Tampa Florida, Fields was offered the morning weather position at KPSP-LP in Palm Springs, California. Fields was later promoted to Chief Meteorologist for KPSP and worked for the station until May 2004.

During a question-and-answer segment with then-announcer Johnny Olson at a taping of Price Is Right in 1978, Fields asked how he could get Olson's job. Olson brought Fields onstage and asked him to give an example of how he would call a contestant to "Come on down!"^[3]

In March 2004, while still working for KPSP, Fields auditioned for the announcing role on The Price Is Right that was vacated by the death of Rod Roddy. Occasionally, Fields delivered his weather forecasts for KPSP from the Price Is Right stage (Studio 33) at CBS Television City. On April 4, 2004, CBS announced that Fields would become the show's new announcer. Legendary show host Bob Barker introduced Fields to viewers nationwide on the episode that aired April 27 of that year.

In 2008, and nearly a year after Drew Carey took over the host position on The Price Is Right, Fields began to regularly appear on camera, interacting with Carey during the show. In that time, Fields appeared on camera more often than either of his predecessors during their tenures as announcer. On July 16, 2010, Fields announced on his website that he would not be returning to The Price Is Right, as the show's current executive producer Mike Richards was looking to change certain aspects of the show. In the web post, Fields stated producers plan to add performances by live bands and include an announcer with a background in improvisational comedy.^[4] Since Fields' departure, a rotating group of guest announcers have appeared in his place, until George Gray succeeded him on April 18, 2011.^[5]

Other work[link]

In 2006, Fields appeared in the Fox sitcom The War at Home as an energetic game show host opposite Michael Rappaport. Also in 2006, Fields was called to do voice-over on the ABC comedy According to Jim. In 2007 Fields appeared as himself on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother with host Bob Barker in the episode titled "Showdown".

In addition to appearing on both the daytime and prime-time versions of The Price Is Right, Fields has also made appearances on other television shows including Gameshow Marathon, Inside Edition, The Late Late Show and many others. In 2006, Fields co-hosted the Orlando Christmas Parade on Superstation WGN. In 2007, Fields was the host of the first-ever Game Show Hall of Fame Awards in Las Vegas. At that show, Fields accepted Merv Griffin's induction into the Hall of Fame, at the request of the Griffin family.

On May 1, 2008, Fields appeared on GSN Live on Game Show Network. On June 10, 2008, Fields guest starred on NBC's Last Comic Standing as the announcer for the event "Last Comic Smackdown". Prior to this, Fields provided narration for GSN's Top 10 Countdown of the greatest game show hosts during the segment on Bob Barker, with Bob being in the #1 position. Fields has also appeared onstage many times with Drew Carey and his "Comedy Allstars" shows at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV. Fields also announced Drew Carey's Improv-A-Ganza, a GSN series hosted by Carey and featuring most of the cast of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, which aired in 2011, he also performed in an episode.

Fields served as a guest announcer on Wheel of Fortune following the death of Charlie O'Donnell, and provided post-production voice-over work for over nine weeks of episodes.^[6]

Mark Goodson (January 14, 1915 – December 18, 1992) was an American television producer who specialized in game shows.

Life and early career[link]

Mark Goodson was born in Sacramento, California on January 14, 1915. His parents, Abraham Ellis and Fannie Goodson, emigrated from Russia in the early 1900s. As a child, Goodson acted in amateur theater with the Plaza Stock Company. The family later moved to Hayward, California. Originally intending to become a lawyer, Goodson attended the University of California, Berkeley. He financed his education through scholarships and by working at the Lincoln Fish Market. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1937 with a degree in Economics. That year, he began his broadcasting career in San Francisco, working as a disc jockey at station KJBS. In 1939 he joined radio station KFRC, where he produced and hosted a radio quiz called "Pop the Question" in which contestants selected questions by throwing darts at multi-colored balloons.

In 1941, Goodson married his first wife, Bluma Neveleff, and moved to New York City, where he teamed up with partner Bill Todman. The pair's first radio show, Winner Take All, premiered on CBS in 1946. Outside of television production, Goodson and Todman went on to own several newspapers in New England as well as radio station KOL in Seattle, Washington. Bill Todman died in 1979, and in the early 1980s the Goodsons acquired the Todman heirs' portion of the company.

Goodson had two children, Jill and Jonathan (1945–), by his first wife Bluma, and a daughter, Marjorie, by his second wife Virginia McDavid. In the early 1970s, he married his third wife, Suzanne Waddell, who had once been a guest on What's My Line?. Goodson also had a brother, Marvin (November 6, 1918–July 7, 2007), who was an attorney.

Television production[link]

Goodson and long-time partner Bill Todman produced some of the longest-running game shows in US television history. Their first television show, Winner Take All, debuted on CBS television on July 1, 1948. The long list of Goodson-Todman productions includes Beat the Clock, Family Feud, Match Game, Password, The Price Is Right, To Tell the Truth, I've Got a Secret, What's My Line?, and Card Sharks. The shows endured through the decades, many over multiple runs, because of Goodson's sharp eye for production and presentation.

While Todman oversaw the company's lucrative businesses outside of television, Goodson handled the creative aspects of producing game shows. The people who worked for the company and created most of the Goodson-Todman shows were pivotal to the success of those shows. Goodson-Todman executives Bob Stewart, Bob Bach, Gil Fates, Ira Skutch, Frank Wayne, Chester Feldman, Paul Alter, Howard Felsher, Ted Cooper, Jay Wolpert, and others were instrumental in making the shows successful.

Many of the actual formats were created by producers working for Goodson-Todman:

Goodson-Todman was involved with the 1969 pilot of The Joker's Wild, along with creator Jack Barry, but severed ties with Barry shortly afterward.

The company proved itself to be masterful at games, but were not as successful when they tried other fields of television programs, including the anthology dramas The Web and The Richard Boone Show, a talk-variety show for famed insult comic Don Rickles – and what was possibly the company's biggest failure, a sitcom entitled One Happy Family.^{[citation needed]}

Goodson-Todman Productions were also involved with three westerns: Jefferson Drum (1958–1959), starring Jeff Richards as a newspaper editor in the Old West; The Rebel (1959–1961), starring Nick Adams as an ex-Confederate soldier who traveled to the West after the Civil War (Johnny Cash sang the theme); and Branded, starring Chuck Connors as a soldier who had wrongly been given a dishonorable discharge from the Army.

For many years, the company was headquartered in the Seagram Building at 375 Park Avenue, New York City, New York. Most of the company's production moved to Hollywood in the early seventies (as did many other production companies), starting with the ABC revival of Password in 1971. The Los Angeles offices were based first at 6430 Sunset Boulevard and later at 5750 Wilshire Boulevard. The company's last New York-based show was the 1980s version of To Tell the Truth, but the New York office remained open and was used for East Coast Child's Play auditions.

A few years after Bill Todman's death in 1979, Goodson acquired the Todman heirs' share of the company, and in 1982 the company was renamed Mark Goodson Productions. Traditionally, shows would sign off with "This is (announcer's name) speaking for (show name). A Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Production/A Mark Goodson Television Production." To pay off a massive inheritance tax, Goodson's family sold the rights (except for Concentration/Classic Concentration, which had been licensed from NBC) to All-American Television, which was subsequently taken over by Pearson Communications, and, in turn, was acquired by FremantleMedia which now owns the rights to the library from Mark Goodson Productions. At the close of each episode of The Price Is Right since then, the announcer credits the show as "a FremantleMedia Production."

In 1990, Goodson received the Emmy Award "Lifetime Achievement Award for Daytime Television", which was presented to him by Betty White.^[1]

Foreign versions[link]

Many Goodson-Todman games were produced internationally, some under different titles, and were distributed by Reg Grundy Productions – Family Feud was known in the United Kingdom as Family Fortunes, and Card Sharks went under the title Play Your Cards Right. In Germany, Match Game was known as Schnick Schnack (loosely translated, "something, anything" and used as a counterpart for the word "blank", for which there is no direct word in German). In the United Kingdom, it was known as Blankety Blank, while in Australia, it was known as Blankety Blanks (which, coincidentally, was the title of an unrelated American game show, created by former Goodson-Todman staffer, Bob Stewart).

Most Grundy-produced counterparts of Goodson-Todman games had low payouts, but made up for it with almost identical sets (e.g., Blankety Blanks) or unique sets of their own (e.g., Family Fortunes).

Death[link]

Goodson died of pancreatic cancer on December 18, 1992 in New York City. He is buried at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, California, where the inscription on his gravestone is designed to resemble the Goodson-Todman/Mark Goodson Productions logo.

Aftermath of Mark Goodson Productions[link]

Three years after Goodson's death, his family sold the rights to the library of shows to All American Television in order to pay off an estate tax^{[citation needed]}. AATV acquired 50% of the company that year, and acquired the rest a year later. AATV was bought out by rival communications company Pearson Television in 1998, which, in turn, was acquired by RTL Group subsidiary FremantleMedia four years later (at one time, one of the company's predecessors, Fremantle International, was the distributor of Goodson-Todman game shows internationally). FremantleMedia now owns the rights to the Goodson-Todman library of game shows. While The Price Is Right and Family Feud continue in production to this day, other Goodson-Todman shows have found a new life and a new audience in reruns on cable TV's Game Show Network. The only omissions from the library are the 1973 and 1987 versions of Concentration, which were licensed from NBC.

Goodson's son Jonathan has continued with new game show concepts. He joined the company in 1973 as legal counsel, but began production work with the company's shows, including the original version of Card Sharks; eventually producing the 1990 version of Match Game. He stayed through corporate takeovers until 1998. He left to begin his own production company, Jonathan Goodson Productions, which produces both state lottery game shows and original game show concepts, with 2003's Dirty Rotten Cheater being the newest Goodson game, having already been sold internationally. Another Goodson game, Cram, was produced for GSN and ran for two seasons.

Goodson-Todman shows continued the Mark Goodson Productions name, logo and announcement at the end of each episode, even though the original production company no longer existed. This practice was ended in 2002 with two of the three programs still in production at the time, To Tell the Truth and Family Feud, and ultimately ended in June 2007 when The Price Is Right stopped using the logo with the retirement of host Bob Barker.

• The Price Is Right was the last surviving show that used the Mark Goodson Production name, logo, and announcement until Bob Barker retired in 2007. The first episode of the 2007–2008 season (15 Oct 2007) featured the FremantleMedia name, logo, and announcement.
