V (also known as V: The Series) is a one-hour weekly television series that aired in the United States on NBC in 1984-85. It is a continuation of the science fiction franchise about an alien invasion of Earth by a carnivorous race of reptilians known as "The Visitors" which was originally conceived by American writer, producer, and director Kenneth Johnson. Johnson, however, was not involved in the production of the weekly series.

Plot [link]

Following directly on from the events of the mini-series V: The Final Battle, the alien Diana escapes from her captured mothership in a shuttle, but is pursued by resistance member Mike Donovan. After a short fight, Donovan captures her.

One year after the day the Red Dust was deployed, now the international holiday called "Liberation Day", the former members of the Resistance and their Fifth Column allies have gone their separate ways and are each looking forward to prosperous careers and bright futures. As Diana is about to be put on trial for the atrocities she committed during the First Invasion, the company responsible for mass production of the Red Dust, Science Frontiers, has her abducted and taken to a secret cabin in the woods outside L.A., where the company's CEO, Nathan Bates, offers Diana better accommodations in exchange for providing him with access to alien technology.

Donovan and Martin, meanwhile, pursue Nathan's agents in a stolen helicopter. After reaching the cabin, Donovan is knocked unconscious by Martin, who wants Diana dead. Before Martin can kill her, Diana is able to overpower him, stealing his pistol. She forces him to surrender his last antidote pill so she can temporarily survive on Earth and then shoots him, enabling her escape to the Southwest Tracking Station.

Martin tells Donovan about Diana's plan to contact the Visitor Fleet moments before his death, and Donovan sets off after her on foot. Donovan meets Ham Tyler, one of the thugs on Bates' payroll, and the two agree to pursue Diana together. Their attempts to stop her fail, and Diana escapes to a Visitor Shuttle sent by a new fleet hidden behind the Moon. Diana proceeds to launch the Second Invasion of Earth.

The Resistance assembles once more, now fighting the Visitors nationwide and also contending with the power-hungry Nathan Bates, who has used the power vacuum left behind by the collapse of the government to become Governor of Los Angeles. The Resistance fights however it can, often joined by other rebel groups. Although 50% of the Earth is still protected from The Visitors by the Red Dust bacterium, the Resistance cannot use any more of it due to the toxic long-term effects it will have on the environment. Meanwhile, Elizabeth, who has transformed yet again and now looks like a young adult, becomes increasingly important in the cause for Earth's freedom, eventually controlling the destiny of both races and deciding the outcome of the conflict.

Continuing to sympathising with the Resistance, the club becomes their informal headquarters and he provides employment and safe refuge to Willie and the Starchild Elizabeth. Club Creole is destroyed by a Visitor raid and Elias is later killed attempting to rescue Robin Maxwell.
  • Lane Smith as Nathan Bates (episodes 1-13) - CEO of biotech company Science Frontiers that mass produced the Red Dust which made the Earth toxic to Visitors in The Final Battle. His power ambition sees him consistently blackmail Diana to gain control of the Los Angeles area which becomes an "Open City". Bates is killed by his henchman Mr Chiang.
  • Jeff Yagher as Kyle Bates (episodes 3-19) - introduced as the disowned rebel son of Nathan Bates. Kyle joins the Resistance, eventually becoming one of its leaders, falling in love with the Starchild Elizabeth and then apparently stowing away on The Leader's spacecraft to follow her.

  • Michael Ironside as Ham Tyler (episodes 1-12) - continues his role as former CIA agent and Resistance hitman from The Final Battle. Is introduced having been hired as a hitman for Nathan Bates before defecting back to the Resistance. Tyler is converted by Charles to assasinate Mike Donovan and due to the resulting mixed emotions and burnout departs to Chicago with Chris Farber and Robin Maxwell.
  • Mickey Jones as Chris Farber (episodes 9-11) - reprises role from V The Final Battle as burly associate and best friend of Ham Tyler, assisting the Resistance. Departs to Chicago with Tyler and Robin Maxwell.
  • Jenny Beck as young Elizabeth the Starchild (episode 1) - continues her role from the original mini-series before undergoing a metamorphisis at the end of the first episode. Briefly reappears in episode 9 as an evil clone of the Starchild.

  • Duncan Regehr as Charles (episodes 10-13) - Supreme Commander and a member of the Royal house of Raman sent by The Leader to take over military operations from Diana. He schemes to wipe out the resistance and kill Mike Donovan. He is known for being a ladies man, the women in the fleet find him appealing.Annoyed at Diana's defiance of him, he uses his power of betrothal to order her to marry him within 12 hours in order to force her customary return to the Homeworld to bear his offspring. After seeing her naked in a ceremonial bath prior to the wedding, he changes his mind and arrangers her stay. Sensing Lydia's attempt to kill her by poisoned ceremonial chalice, Diana switches with Charles which results in his death.
  • Peter Elbling as Oswald (episodes 15; 17-18) - Visitor underling of Diana, he is a mortician and an interior decorator. Diana had him "procure" several sexual partners for her pleasure (a job which he enjoyed immensely). He is very flamboyant and very openly homosexual but had enough modesty and morals to steer clear of what he considered stereotypical gay behaviour such as "bathousing and barbarism" though that did not stop him from indulging in his taste for sexual pleasures as Diana did with her partners.
  • Judson Scott as Lieutenant James (episodes 11-19) - Visitor soldier hired by Charles to masquerade as a Resistance fighter. He is taken under Diana's wing, becoming her lover and second in command.
  • Nicky Katt as Sean Donovan (episodes 5-6) - son of Mike Donovan has become loyal to the Visitor ranks and resists his father's attempts to rescue him.

Intro [link]

The intro for Episodes 1-13 was the classic theme music along with the main cast with credits.

The show then went into hiatus while a decision was made whether to continue or cancel it.

With Episode 14, a new intro was introduced with Michael Ironside, Lane Smith, Blair Tefkin and Michael Wright removed from the credits along with different theme music and a new monologue describing the premise of the show:

[Narrator] They arrived in 15 motherships offering their friendship and advanced technology to Earth. Skeptical of The Visitors Mike Donovan and Julie Parish infiltrated their ranks and soon discovered some startling secrets .... [July Parish] They're shipping food! .... [Narrator] The Resistance is all that stands between us and The Visitors"[1]

Distribution [link]

V was broadcast in Britain in 1984 on ITV,and the rest of Europe, where it found a cult following.[2] The series was also broadcast in Australia on Network Ten in 1985.[3]

Production notes [link]

  • The TV series' single season was released on LaserDisc in Japan in April 1989 (bilingual English/Japanese with subtitles) as a massive 10-disc box set, which included a "Diana Special" (in Japanese only) on side 20. It was later issued on Region 1 DVD in 2004, and Region 2 in 2008.
  • The weekly series reused a lot of action footage from the mini-series. This was especially evident in the Visitor skyfighter chase scene in the pilot episode, where nearly all external shots were lifted from the climax scene of the original mini-series.
  • In the original mini-series and The Final Battle, the Visitors' voices were given, among other post-processing, a pitch shift effect. This was dropped from the weekly series.

Comic Book [link]

DC Comics published 18 issues of a "V" comic book concurrently with the TV series. [1]

Steady B

Warren McGlone (born September 17, 1969, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), known by the stage name Steady B, is an American hip hop emcee who, along with Schoolly D, the Fresh Prince, and Three Times Dope, was one of the first wave of Philadelphia-area emcees to gain notoriety in the mid to late 1980s. Steady B was a member (and de facto leader) of Philadelphia's Hilltop Hustlers crew. Steady B's musical career was relatively short-lived, and he is currently serving a life sentence in a Pennsylvania state prison for his role in the murder of a Philadelphia Police officer during a botched bank robbery in January 1996.

Music career

Early career

Steady B's original DJ was Grand Dragon K.D., later replaced by DJ Tat Money, who later became the DJ for Kwamé and a New Beginning. At his best, Steady mixed well-written metaphors and wordplay with sparse yet catchy drum tracks. Steady B released five albums over the course of his career, with mixed success.

C.E.B.

In 1991, Steady B formed the hardcore hip hop group C.E.B., with fellow, local Philadelphia emcees Cool C and Ultimate Eaze, in an effort to update his style and record sales. C.E.B.'s name was a backronym for Countin' Endless Bank, but it was also an acronym for the names of the group's three members. The trio released its only album, Countin' Endless Bank, on Ruffhouse Records in 1992. The single "Get the Point" reached #5 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles. The album was poorly received.

V (Legião Urbana album)

V is the fifth studio album by the Brazilian rock band Legião Urbana. It was released in December 15, 1991.

History

The album reflects the Brazilian political climate at the time of its recording, including the economic crisis suffered during President Fernando Collor de Mello's government, and Renato Russo's rampant drug dependence. In 1991, Russo discovered he was HIV+.

V's songs are characterized by a dark, medieval influence: the first track, "Love Song", is an adaptation of a love poem written in Galician-Portuguese by Nuno Fernandes Torneol in the 13th century. "Metal Contra as Nuvens", the longest song ever recorded by the band, continues the motif along with "A Ordem dos Templários", a serene instrumental featuring samples from Guillaume de Machaut's "Douce Dame Jolie".

"A Montanha Mágica" is lyrically about drug dependence. "O Teatro dos Vampiros" references the economic crisis then experienced by Brazil; its intro was adapted from Pachelbel's Canon.

However, the second half of the album is slightly more upbeat in theme and music, featuring "Sereníssima", "L'Âge d'Or", "O Mundo Anda Tão Complicado" and "Vento no Litoral", later covered by Cássia Eller. The last track of the album, "Come Share My Life", is an instrumental cover of an American folk song.

Quotes:

[first lines]::Narrator: There was, once upon a time, a town not far from a big city. A road ran through, but there were only a few businesses. A coffee shop, a hardware store, a sheriff's office. And all kinds of people. Vagrants, run away teens, religious fanatics, retired seniors who, well, it was a town of those who wanted to be left alone. And so they were.

V: Keeping track of time around here is pointless.

Melvin: You know who came up with Daylight Savings Time, don't you? Hitler. And you know who supports it now? Doctors. And you know why? Golf. They want more time to golf. That's what it's all about. You can't change time. Time changes you.

Hall Baltimore: The fog on the lake reminds me of my first wife - it dissipated with time.

Poe: Of all the melancholy topics, what, according the the universal understanding of mankind, is the most tragic?::Hall Baltimore: Death.::Poe: And when is this most tragic of melancholy topics most poetical? When it most loosely alludes itself to beauty. The death, therefore, of a beautiful girl is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world. Equally, it is beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such a topic, are those of a man who loved her.

Hall Baltimore: People are saying what's going on up here is evil. Are you worried about that?::Flamingo: Look around. Does this look evil to you?

Poe: During the brightest days of her unparalleled beauty, I loved her. Not as the living and breathing Virginia, but as the Virginia of the dream.

Poe: Our work must be the grave that we prepare for its lovely talent.

[last lines]::Sam: Hall Baltimore, master of witchcraft no more.::Hall Baltimore: Never more. [they shake hands]

(Louris, Johnson)
When I was down she was full of advice
'Cause she'd been there once or twice
With a ring on the side of her nose
Wearing other people's clothes
She had her highs and she had her lows
In between she'd show
When she smiled everything else died
V let off a good vibe
Chorus:
As if in a dream
The one and only V
As if in a dream
The one and only V
Buying shots and breaking hearts
She used to wait on us down at the bar
Never took as much as she gave
She's still giving to this day
Staying up half the night
Mood swing yet we cried
On a cold December day
V up and went away
(Chorus)
Staying up half the night
Mood swing yet we cried
On a cold December day
V up and went away
(Chorus)
