Horrific scenes at Brazzavile Military Hospital- Republic of Congo- post explosions 12th March 2012
South African orthopaedic surgeons are working like car mechanics in the Republic of Congo to get the job done. They arrived under the premise that Brazzavile Military hospital was the best equipped in the country after the depot explosions last week which left thousands maimed. But the tools are rusty, they don't have sterilisers and time is running out. This morning (Monday) the first surgery was delayed because the hospital didn't have sterile scalpel blades, the most essential surgical tool. "We are working half speed compared to South African," said chief surgeon Johnny de Beer. "Poorly qualified nurses, having to improvise with tools and the language barrier is all slowing us down," he said. The local translators, mostly English language school teachers, have been thrown in the deep end handling everything from body searches to operation dialogue between patients and surgeons. One passed out during an amputation yesterday (Sunday). Amputations are vital on many patients' arms and legs as infections rapidly eat at their wounds, turning them septic yellow. Trauma doctor Rosanne Symons explained "First they draw with a marker pen where to cut. Then they tear through the skin and muscle using a scalpel, tying up the veins and nerve endings as they go." Once surgeons reach the bone they use a saw built for cutting wood ,and an industrial drill, till the bone can be separated by hand. "Many patients refuse amputations. They will die if we can't convince them that it is ...

A Silent Genocide - Democratic Republic of the Congo
Although in 1994 it was widely reported that the refugees fleeing into eastern Zaire (now Congo) was creating a humanitarian catastrophe, the crisis continues today unabated. Reaching epic proportions of casualties, the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has seemed to vanish from the mass media of the world. Scores on UN reports have chronicled a genocide surpassing that of the holocaust.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the situation remains tense between the government troops and the rebels of Laurent Nkunda. The rebels refuse to disarm as long as the Rwandan Hutu militiamen, some of whom took part in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda remain in Eastern Congo

Women on the Frontline - Democratic Republic of Congo
Women on the Frontline is a video documentary series, presented by Annie Lennox, that shines a light on violence against women and girls. The series takes the front to homes, villages and cities around the world where a largely unreported war against females is being waged. Broadcast on BBC World for seven weeks in 2008, the series covers: Nepal, where thousands of women are trafficked each year; Turkey, where killing in the name of honour continues; Morocco, where women political activists who have survived torture and imprisonment testify before a government truth and reconciliation commission; the DRC, where women bear the brunt of a 10-year war in the eastern provinces; Colombia, where women have been tortured in the shadow of a guerilla war; Mauritania, where women who have been raped may go to prison; and Austria, where, under a new law, perpetrators of domestic violence are forced to leave home. HIV/AIDS in Democratic Republic of Congo
The number of HIV-positive people in DRC is currently estimated at more than one million, 350000 of whom could benefit from antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. However, only 44000 people are currently receiving treatment, translating into a 15 percent ARV coverage rate, one of the lowest in the world.

Congo's Tin Soldiers - Democratic Republic of Congo
May 2006 The West's demand for Cassiterite is fuelling the killings in Congo. Militias rely on slave labour to extract the ore, forcing locals to work in sub-human conditions. "Once you get down there, there's no air", describes one worker. "The rocks often bury us and you have to crawl through the tiny hole, using your fingers to dig." Labourers like him often go unpaid. They're forced to work at gunpoint by militias operating outside the control of the government. "Different armed groups do what they want with the population", laments minister Buta Muiso. But British businessman Ketankumar Kotecha sees nothing wrong in buying casiterite from the militias. "If I didn't do it, someone else would. I am not here as some kind of moral saviour."

Children of Congo: From War to Witches
Over five million people have died during the past decade as a result of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Few people are aware of the unimaginable scale of human suffering, death, and destruction that has occurred in this vast country deep in the heart of Africa. In the aftermath of this brutal war, children have endured the brunt of the suffering. This 67 minute film documents the plight of thousands of street children living in Kinshasa and confirms the wide-spread accusations of child witchcraft, torture and child prostitution. The film also examines the efforts to reintegrate demobilized child soldiers, displaced refugees, and orphaned children following the eruption of the massive Nyiragongo volcano, near the city of Goma in Eastern Congo. These heroic efforts are finally bringing some measure of hope and stability to the lives of the Congolese people. Dan Balluff's "Children of Congo: From War to Witches" is a must see film, showing individuals and organizations that are implementing positive change for the children and the people of the Democtatic Republic of Congo. Kabila's Congo - Democratic Republic of Congo
June 1999 Following Kabila's takeover, Kinshasa's unpaid and undervalued middle classes urgently want a better life. We examine the future of a new regime which rode to power promising real change. At informal 'street parliaments', the educated classes scrutinise every aspect of Kabila's rule and what they find makes them nervous - they're awaiting democracy and jobs. In one group lawyers and doctors gather for anxious political debate. At Kinshasa's version of Wall Street, located on a muddy road, American dollars change hands for local currency during vigorous trading: official banks have little or no cash. American-educated Deogratias Baharama works unpaid at the dilapidated Ministry of Agriculture. His wife Jean sells beans at market just to keep their dingy home. Finance Minister Mwampanga Mwana Nanga wants to kick start the economy but has a problem, "I need hard cash. I need money", he sighs. A printing press still churns out sheets of virtually worthless paper money. At a political rally Laurent Kabila provokes a frenzy with a promise to end unemployment. Though wary of the future, people are, for now, prepared to 'wait and see'. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Be a Whistleblower for Peace
Falling Whistles gives a small window into our world’s largest war. Originally just a journal written about boys sent to the frontlines of war armed with only a whistle, readers forwarded it with the same kind of urgency in which it was written and demanded to know – what can we do?
The Falling Whistles campaign launched with a simple response - make their weapon your voice and be a whistleblower for peace in Congo. Read the story and buy the whistle. Proceeds will help restore the lives of war-affected kids. Share their story and speak up for them.
Together, we'll become the voice of a growing coalition for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DR Congo elections marred by fraud allegations
Elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been rife with disorganisation, violence and allegations of fraud. In protest of the alleged irregularities, four out of the 11 presidential candidates running have demanded that the elections be annulled. The angry candidates list "fictitious" polling stations and pre-marked ballot papers benefiting incumbent President Joseph Kabila among their concerns. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from Kinshasa, DR Congo. Read the full article: aje.me

Rebel fighters capture key city in Democratic Republic of Congo
United Nations peacekeepers stood by as troops from the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group marched unopposed into Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Small arms fire was heard soon after daybreak north of Goma, but that fighting ended swiftly and within four hours the M23 forces swept into the city unopposed. The rebels, who Congo's neighbour Rwanda has been forced to deny it is supporting, appear to have no clear aim now that they have control of Goma. It is expected they will demand significant concessions from the government before they agree to withdraw. There were fears that now that the city has fallen, rebel soldiers, who have spent months in eastern Congo's wild hinterland, will go on a rampage of looting and rape, particularly if the UN continues to appear ineffective. So far, however, they have been well-disciplined. "They marched right past my house, they were in smart uniforms and looked disciplined, but we know that they can start stealing or getting drunk and then we don't know who will protect us," a motorcycle taxi driver in Goma said.
