Mid Continent Railway Museum - CNW 1385
The last month of operation for Chicago & North Western 4-6-0 No. 1385, filmed in May, 1998. We see the locomotive being serviced at North Freedom, Wisconsin for a day of trips over the Mid Continent Railway. The engine is pulling a train of Lackawanna steel coaches between North Freedom and Quartzite Lake. The engine was retired not long after this footage was taken, and is now awaiting a new boiler. Visit www.1385.org for more info about how you can help get this proud engine back on its feet!

CNW 8701 leading a westbound across the Mississippi River Bridge into Clinton, IA on 1/27/08. As they go by me an eastbound goes past them and onto the bridge. Sorry it's so shaky. I didn't have my tripod and it was COLD. It's been over 3 years ago now and I still remember how much I was shivering that day.

CNW Grain Pickup
Just messing around on the layout. This train grew from 45 cars to 71 by the end of the night. Unfortunately the batteries died on the camera before I could record the whole 71 car train. Oh well, next time. This clip shows the train stopping on what I call the controlled siding, dropping off LMS 712 on track 2 and making a pickup in the yard. With the three man crew, one guy shuts down the 712 while the other two guys on the crew do the switching. Of course they are all moving really fast so you can't see them. :)

A C&NW; GP7??? Leading a stack train?? HOLY COW!!! Nelson, IL. 6/15/1993
I have NO idea what the story is on this! My wife and I where trackside at Woodland Shores IL, when I spotted this coming east, and wonder what the heck is this. A C&NW; GP7 4107 running long hood forward of two UP SD's 6348-6233 pulling a stack train at track speed. That's a first for me! Seeing an old Geep leading a stack! The second clip is a UP 6320 and is also east bound at the coaling tower seen in the distance of the first clip, and is at Nelson, IL. Doing some research on the GP7! It was a former Rock Island unit #1202 and renumbered 4432. It was classed as a GP7R after its rebuild by the CRI&P.; Thanks for watching. Jackmp294.5

Metra UP-W Line Cab-Car Ride: C&NW; Power at West Chicago & More!
Riding inbound (eastbound) Metra / Union Pacific- West Line train #510, from West Chicago to Ogilvie Transportation Center (Northwestern Station) in downtown Chicago, as seen from the front vestibule window of the cab-car. Not the whole ride is shown; just these tidbits: First, a surprise just past the West Chicago depot: unpatched, ex-Chicago & North Western Dash-9 #8710 leads a Union Pacific SD70M with an autorack train and some manifest freight tacked on the rear. It's quite rare that a freight these days could be called "CNW 8710 West"! Once this passes, the new signals that replaced the C&NW-style; signal bridge between West Chicago and Winfield, along with the now-signalless bridge, can be seen as we hit Metra's track speed before coming to a station stop at Winfield. Next, past Winfield, is a road overpass under construction, just before the old Chicago, Aurora & Elgin (CA&E;) electric interurban bridge over what is now UP's triple-track main into Chicago. The bridge carried the CA&E;'s line to Elgin, which had a branch to Geneva. Just south of this bridge were the CA&E;'s Wheaton Shops, and its Aurora line, with a branch to Batavia. The CA&E; was owned by the same interests that controlled the North Shore Line to Milwaukee, the South Shore Line to South Bend, and many other electric interurban railroads-- unfortunately, the CA&E; was the first to go of these, and the South Shore is the only one still in operation today. Thankfully though, the entire CA&E; system (except ...

Final Years of the Union Pacific (CNW) Weber-Mayfair Sub I
This is probably the only known footage of activity on the Union Pacific's (former Chicago & Northwestern) railroad's "Weber" or "Mayfair Cutoff." The subdivision covered the far north-side of Chicago, Lincolnwood, Skokie and Evanston (Illinois). Footage is from March, 2004. I spent over 15 years getting photos of this line as the customers it served dropped off to the one you see being served in this movie. I wish I had a video camera in the 1990's, 80's and 70's. But this is the best I could do. To learn more about this line and the wonderful people who have helped preserve its history, please visit our group website at finance.groups.yahoo.com There are also two excellent books covering this line--and its sister line known as the Skokie Subdivision--at www.cnwhs.org If you or someone you know has memories, photos or video, about this line or the Skokie Sub, please contact us through the website or enter your comments below.

C&NW; 8701 and UP 7931, Union Pacific Family Day Special on 6-9-2012
We're chasing the Union Pacific's special "Family Day" train as it runs through Wayne and Garden Prairie, Illinois. Led by a Chicago and Northwestern C44-9W and a new AC45CCTE, the train traveled along the Belvidere subdivison on a sunny, summer day. Several clips at two different locations. The first at Wayne, Illinois where the train shakes the cameras as Engineer Hawley and Conductor Hawley (A father and son team.) run past a waiting group of railfans. Both engines are up front at this location. Once the train reached the Illinois Railway Museum, the power was set up with a unit at each end. Then the train ran west to near Belvedire, Illinois where it passes the cameras at Garden Prairie. A catch in both directions with one separate zoomed-in clip of the C&NW; 8701 leading the train over a dusty gravel road. The 8701 is one of only two C&NW; units left on the UP roster. Nathan K5HR24, Former C&NW;
Here's a recording of my former C&NW; Nathan K5HR24. I'm guessing this horn was probably made in the mid-90s before Nathan started putting serial tags on their horns. This was recorded at the Oak Ridge Horn Honk in September 2007. For more information on the Oak Ridge Horn Honk, please visit www.oakridgehornhonk.org
