Moloya Goswami (Assamese: মলয়া গোস্বামী) is a popular actress from Assam, India. She was the first North-East Indian actress to win the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the Assamese film Firingoti (1992).^[1]

Early life and Education[link]

Malaya Goswami was born in Dibrugarh in Rajkhowa family of Sivasagar. Her father Kailash Rajkhowa was an engineer in Assam Electricity Board and used to transfer from one place to other due to work responsibilities. But Malaya and her sister stayed all of their school years in Nagaon. After her matriculation from Nagaon Girls' High School she came down to Guwahati. She completed her graduation from Handique College and completed her master degree from Guwahati University. Malaya was very active in sport during her college days and got selected even for the first women's Hockey team from Assam. After her education, she took teaching as her profession. Initially she worked in Sonari College for few years and then joined Jagiroad college in 1983.^[2]

In 1981, Malaya married Pradip Goswami, he is an engineer in Assam State Electricity Board. Her husband was a source of great inspiration towards her acting career. Her debut film was from the great Assamese Film maker Late Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia in 1987. The movie named 'Agnisnaan' was based on Saikia's famouis novel 'Antareep'. In the movie Malaya Goswami had the main role as 'Menaka'. Her on screen personality and gravity immediately caught attention assamese film industry. Even she just missed the best actress award with slight margin.

In 1992, Malaya Goswami acted in her second movie 'Firingoti', directed by another great film maker of Assam Jahnu Baruah. She played the role a lady who overcomes personal trauma and dedicate her life for the education of a village. This film bagged her the most prestigious National "Rajat Kamal" award for best actress in the year 1992.

There was no looking back for Malaya Goswami after these couple of movies. "Uttarkaal", Maa", "I Killed Him Sir", "Aasene Konoba Hiyaat", "Sesh Upahaar",etc. are few of the other movie she has acted. Her on screen personality always bagged her very decent Assamese films. She also acted in various popular TV serials like "Writu aahe writu jaai". She has acted agaiinst all veteran directors and actors of Assam. Her strong voice also attracted All India Radio to give her chance in more than 40 radio plays. Malaya Goswami has also made a mark in poetry recitation of great poets like Nabakanta Baruah, Jyotiprasad Agarwalla. She is also involved in various stage plays and has won critics words.

Malaya Goswami has been awarded with "Joymoti Award" and also "Best TV Actress" for "Writu aahe writu jaai".

Vice-Admiral Temple West (1714 – 9 August 1757) was a British naval officer, best known for his role as second-in-command to Admiral John Byng in the Battle of Minorca.

Early career and family[link]

West was a younger son of Rev. Dr. Richard West, archdeacon of Berkshire, and his wife Maria Temple, daughter of Sir Richard Temple, 3rd Baronet and sister of the influential Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham and also Hester Grenville, 1st Countess Temple.

His elder brother was the author Gilbert West.^[1] and his sister, Mary, married Admiral Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport.^[2]

In 1738, he was given command of Deal Castle, a 24-gun sixth-rate.^[3] In 1742, he was made captain of Warwick, a 60-gun fourth-rate. During the Battle of Toulon, Warwick was one of three ships that broke up a Franco-Spanish movement to weather the British line, but did so contrary to orders. He was court-martialed at Deptford on 13 December 1745, found guilty, and dismissed the service, but was reinstated on 12 May 1746 by Order in Council.^[4] In 1747, he commanded Devonshire as flag-captain to Vice-Admiral Sir Peter Warren at the Battle of Cape Finisterre.

He married Frances Balchen, daughter of Admiral Sir John Balchen,^[5] and was the father of Balchen West and hence grandfather of Sir Edward West, first Chief Justice of Bombay. His other son, Martin West^[6] was Recorder of Lynn, who married Lady Maria Walpole, (daughter of Horatio Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford^[7]), by whom he had a son, The Rt Hon Sir Algernon West.GCB.^[8]

Battle of Minorca[link]

In 1756, West, now a rear-admiral, was appointed second-in-command to Admiral Byng to lead a hastily-assembled squadron to the relief of Minorca. West sailed aboard Buckingham, Flag-Captain Michael Everitt,^[9], and the fleet saw action on 20 May 1756, the day after their arrival. West had command of the van, which attacked the rear of the French van and drew heavy fire. In the rear, Byng, who had insufficient sail on to promptly come up and support the van, declined to put on further sail, citing the court-martial of Thomas Mathews at the Battle of Toulon. (Mathews had attacked the enemy individually while flying a signal to attack in line of battle, resulting in a confused and disorderly attack.) The French drew off at the end of the day, and the English fleet lacked the weather gage to pursue.

After Minorca[link]

Both Byng and West were recalled from command after the battle, beginning the process which culminated in the court-martial and execution of Byng, for failing to do his duty "to his utmost". West, on the contrary, was received as a hero, and was appointed a Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty^[9] on 17 November 1756 and promoted to Vice-Admiral. The fate of his superior greatly affected West, who afterwards declined a command, saying that "although he could answer for his loyalty and good intentions, he could not undertake to be held capitally responsible on all occasions for the correctness of his judgment".^[10] He died not long after, on 9 August 1757, and was buried in Westminster Abbey, ^[5] where there is a handsome monument.
