The Hyundai Veloster is a compact 3-door car first produced in 2011 by the Hyundai Motor Company, with sales beginning in South Korea in March 10, 2011 and in the United States since the fall of 2011.^{[not verified in body]} It is the first of Hyundai's new Premium Youth Lab sub-brand, which is targeted for the young generation of drivers.^{[not verified in body]} It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit auto show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Tiburon after the 2008 model year^[1].

The car is different from many competitors as it has one door on the driver side and two on the passenger side. The Veloster uses Hyundai's new BlueLink system, which is similar to OnStar used in GM vehicles, to provide customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, etc.

The car concept was unveiled in 2007 Seoul Motor Show with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show.^[2][3]

2011–present[link]

In most of the world the production model uses a direct-injected 1.6 liter 138 hp (103 kW), 123 lb·ft (167 N·m) (@ 4,850 rpm) torque, 4-cylinder engine. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard while a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with paddle shifters is available as an option. The DCT transmission was developed by Hyundai and is the first dual-clutch transmission from the company.^[4] Official EPA fuel economy numbers are 28 mpg_-US (8.4 L/100 km; 34 mpg_-imp) city, 40 mpg_-US (5.9 L/100 km; 48 mpg_-imp) highway and 32 mpg_-US (7.4 L/100 km; 38 mpg_-imp) combined for the manual while the dual clutch does 29 mpg_-US (8.1 L/100 km; 35 mpg_-imp) city, 38 mpg_-US (6.2 L/100 km; 46 mpg_-imp) highway and 32 mpg_-US (7.4 L/100 km; 38 mpg_-imp) combined.^[5] For some markets like the Middle East, Chile and Brazil, the car is offered without GDI making 128 hp.^[6]

In Brazil the car has been the subject of controversy as Hyundai advertised the GDi injection but only brought the MPI DUAL injection to market. Consumers who pre-ordered the car were forced to accept the non-GDi vehicle without any compensation or cancel the transaction forfeiting the 10% reservation deposit. Despite the fact that the motor is the same 128 hp (95 kW) of the Veloster commercialized in Chile, the vehicle's license specifies the car as having 138 hp (103 kW; 140 PS). Other advertised options were also not included in the vehicles sold in Brazil. This has led the Brazilian Public Ministry to start investigating Hyundai for fraudulent behavior.^[7][8]

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo (US)

Pricing starts at US$17,300, $23,990 AUD^[9]. There is also a $760 destination fee. In the United States 2 option packages are available, a style package and a tech package. Each package is $2000. Purchase of the tech package requires purchase of the style package as well. Options are not available outside the package, thus resulting in 3 trim levels: base, style, and tech. Each trim level is available with the DCT ($1250 option) or manual transmission.^[10]

A turbocharged model is planned for the 2013 model year.^[11] The car includes 18 inch wheels and 4-wheel disc brakes as standard features, and includes a revised front fascia compared to the base Veloster. A turbocharged 1.6 Gamma GDI was introduced in the 2011 Seoul Motor Show. It generates 201 hp (150 kW) at 6,000 rpm with 195 lb·ft (264 N·m) of torque from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm. This engine will be available in 2012.^[12]

Rhys Millen (born in New Zealand), nephew of IMSA GTS driver Steve Millen, son of Rod and elder brother of Ryan, is one of the America's top competitors in drifting. Prior to that he was a top rally driver in the US, and became the first works backed driver from a car manufacturer with GM in 2004 after narrowly losing to Ken Nomura in the US D1 Grand Prix exhibition event in 2003. In 2011 Millen raced a 500bhp AWD Hyundai Veloster in the US Rallycross championship, in 2012 he will compete in the US-based so-called Global Rallycross Championship.

Millen became just the second champion in the short history of the United States' top drifting series, Formula D, just a year after his good friend, Samuel Hubinette, became the maiden series champ. Millen has two wins in his Formula D career: the 2004 season finale at the Irwindale Speedway, and the 2005 season opener at the Wall Speedway in Wall Township, New Jersey. He became the highest placed non-Japanese driver in the US round of the D1GP event in 2005, making it to the last 8 after beating Masato Kawabata, only to lose to Yasuyuki Kazama through a "One More Time" rerun. Millen's father, Rod, also competes in drifting on occasion. In fact, Rod made his Formula D debut at the 2005 season finale at Irwindale, the same event where his son was crowned the champion.

Millen has driven a Pontiac GTO drift car for three seasons (Winning in 2004 and 2005, but losing out to Hubinette in 2006) and a Pontiac Solstice for the 2007 D1 Season. For the 2009 season, he will drive a Hyundai Genesis Coupe.^[1] Red Bull has been a major sponsor of Rhys' drifting efforts, as well as the paint schemes of many of his cars.

Besides racing, Millen is also a stunt driver for films such as The Dukes of Hazzard, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. He also did the driving for the first Hyundai Genesis Coupe commercial.

On December 31, 2008, he became the first person to back-flip an off-road truck in the air. He landed off-balance, forcing his vehicle to flip on its side a few times after landing, but then walked away unharmed.

In 2009, Hyundai teamed up with Millen to race the Hyundai Genesis Coupe at the Formula Drift Professional Drifting Championship, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and select Redline Time Attack Series events in 2009.^[2][3] On July of that year, Millen set a new rear wheel drive record to take Pikes Peak's time attack title.^[4][5]
