Microcredit debate
This is an extract of a debate on microcredit broadcasted by Democracy Now! on 13 December between Susan Davis, founder and chair of the Grameen Foundation, and Vandana Shiva. The occasion was the acceptance of the Nobel Peace price acceptance speech made by the founder of Grameen Bank Muhammad Yunus. The debate is not only informative but enlightening of the gap we have to overcome in our critical discourses.

Microcredit
Subscribe to the AFP channel: bit.ly Microcredit loans are designed to help lift the world's poorest people out of poverty. Usually reserved for those with no access to the banking system, they enable entrepreneurs to start up their own business, thereby generating an income. But even with the relatively low interest rates imposed, many borrowers still struggle to pay back what they owe. Celebrating the progress of micro-entrepreneurs whose experience has been a success, the International Microfinance Awards take place at the Louvre in Paris on November 26, 2012. VIDEOGRAPHIC

Eritrea's Micro-Credit and Savings Program rendering more service
EriTV - Asmara, 15 October 2012 -- The Micro-Credit and Savings Program has made it possible to render commendable service in more areas across the country. Pointing out that the program prioritizes customers such as low-income families, immigrants under rehabilitation and bread winning women in rural areas as they have no instant access to banks, Mr. Tedros Girmai, projects head, disclosed that the program has branch offices in 55 sub-zones, and that future undertakings would focus on quick outreach to the sub-zones of Sel'a, Adobha and Dahlak. He further explained that the beneficiaries predominantly invest in agriculture, while the rest engage in small-scale business activities. The Micro-Credit and Savings Program has around 56000 beneficiaries, 65% of whom are said to be working on the basis of village banks, and that out of the program's 250 million budget, 225 million has already been credited, according to reports. The Micro-Credit and Savings Program was established in 1996 with a view to fostering small-scale business activities, and thereby improve the livelihood of beneficiaries.

Microcredit Is Expanding to New Products for the Poor
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report from voaspecialenglish.com | http Modern microfinance started with economist Muhammad Yunus. In the nineteen seventies, he started what became the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. He and the bank shared the Nobel Peace Prize in two thousand six for the idea of offering small loans to the poor to fight poverty. In twenty ten, reports of harmful micro lending methods and corruption shook the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Mr. Yunus recently said in the New York Times that things got out of control. He noted that Andhra Pradesh had intensive lending activity at the time. We spoke to Ghiyath Nakshbendi about changes in the world of microfinance. He is an expert in international business and teaches microfinance as a business model at the Kogod School of Business at American University. He says the government of India in certain states has started taking steps to "guarantee that these institutions are operating under a strict system."Some experts have raised questions about whether micro lending lifts women or poor families out of poverty. David Roodman is with the Center for Global Development, a research group in Washington. He says microloans do not do a good job fighting poverty. He says over three billion dollars went into microcredit in twenty-ten. But many lenders failed because of bad supervision or failure to repay loans. In one model, governments or nongovernmental organizations give money to microcredit operations ...

Micro-credit
Micro-credit in the EU means loans under €25000. It is tailored to micro-enterprises, employing fewer than 10 people (91% of all European businesses), and unemployed or inactive people who want to go into self-employment but do not have access to traditional banking services. 99% of start-ups in Europe are micro or small enterprises and one third of these are launched by people who are unemployed. www.ec.europa.eu

FONNJ in cooperation with the Rotary International, distributes small loans that begin at Rs. 10000 to Rs. 15000 to poor women so they can start and expand simple businesses and increase their incomes. euronews business planet - Micro-credit brings organic growth in Ireland
www.euronews.com Business Planet has been to Dublin. The third country after Greece and Portugal to need an international financial bailout, it is forecast Ireland will come out of recession this year. A major problem for small and medium companies is still access to credit. But euronews met one entrepreneur who found a way around that. The adventure began for Darren Grant in 2008. He had decided to leave behind his senior management job in computing to open a supermarket dealing in 100 per cent organic goods on the main street of Blackrock in Dublin. Even though the recession was taking hold, he believed in his project. He invested all of his savings, but was still short of funds to fit-out his shop, buy his first stock and pay his staff. So Darren looked at European micro-credit - up to 25000 euros for new business employing up to 10 people. It is money allocated through intermediaries for the European Investment Fund. "I went to Google and I typed in EU Funding for small businesses and what came up was a website, where I simply clicked into and found out there was funding available for EU businesses, which is great," Darren told us. "This led me to the Irish microfinance website first step, and I applied to get 25000 euros, to start the business." Darren now employs eight people - four of them full-time - to run the shop and his internet site which has become a runaway success. Last year it turned over 800000 euros and won various accolades, including the best internet ...

Antenna Microcredit Network, India : a tool for women empowerment
Antenna encourages the distribution of its technologies through innovative micro- credit programmes, in particular helping disadvantaged women develop income- generating activities without resorting to usurers. Poor people in developing countries are unable to access financial services, because they have no guarantees to offer. They are there- fore forced to apply to usurers who demand excessive interest rates. In countries where services to the most destitute people are not available, the access to basic financial services -- such as obtaining a loan, insurance coverage or a savings account - provides perspectives for the poor and significantly enhances the condition of women. Our programmes enable those who are directly concerned to take ownership of project decisions while learning to manage them. As far as possible, Antenna promotes the distribution of its technologies using microcredit programmes. In 2006 Antenna founded Antenna Microcredit Network (AMCN) with the aim of providing low-interest loans to women intending to set up income-generating activities based on an Antenna-designed technology. This programme, developed and managed by the Antenna Trust in Madurai, has had a significant impact in the region. In 2011: * 27 000 micro-borrowers took advantage of loans and are members of 1'530 self-help groups. * 35 NGOs accompany the micro-entrepreneurs in their endeavours. * 1.8 Mio.USD of loan operations with a repayment rate of 98%. The originality of AMCN lies in ...

A Fistful Of Dollars: The Story of a Kiva.org Loan
This video follows the path of a $25 loan from London, England to Preak Tamao village, Cambodia. www.Kiva.org is a website that allows internet users like you or I to lend money to people that need it in developing countries, with the aim of empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty.
This is my first video, and the one that got me interested in shooting more. Shot entirely on a Canon G9 point-and-shoot and a Flip camera. Edited in Final Cut Pro.
