The French Fury was a failed attempt by François, Duke of Anjou to conquer the city of Antwerp by surprise on January 17, 1583. During the Eighty Years' War the States-General had asked in 1581 the French Duke to become head of state of the Seventeen Provinces, to obtain French support in chasing the Spanish troops. Anjou did not have much influence in the Netherlands, and attempted to seize more power. He decided to try to occupy Antwerp, the largest city of the Seventeen Provinces, by surprise. Antwerp had already been comprehensively sacked by Spanish troops in the Spanish Fury of 1576. Unfortunately for Anjou his plan was discovered. The inhabitants, still traumatised by the Spanish Fury seven years earlier, were determined to prevent another occupation by foreign troops by all means possible. On January 17 1583, in an attempt to fool the citizens of Antwerp, Anjou asked to be permitted to enter the city in order to honour them with a Royal Entry. As soon as the troops entered the city, the gates of Antwerp were slammed shut behind them. The French troops were trapped in the city and were bombarded from windows and rooftops with stones, rocks, logs and even heavy chains. The city's garrison then opened a deadly, point-blank fire on the troops. Only a few Frenchmen, including the Duke of Anjou, escaped. Over 1500 troops perished, many of them hacked to death by the enraged citizens of Antwerp. The position of Anjou after this attack became untenable and he left the ...

Iranian Pomegranate Festival 2011 kicks off in Tehran
This is not a rock concert. It is a celebration for the arrival of Iran's most popular fruit. In Iran pomegranates become a part of every joyful event as soon as they appear in fruit stores in early fall. For five consecutive years the culture and art organization of Tehran's municipality has been launching an event dedicated to this attractive gift of nature. The pomegranate festival is organized by Tehran's Eshraq House of Culture. This year the event is titled "Pomegranate the Ruby from Paradise". During the festival pomegranate producers from seventeen provinces have the chance to offer a variety of pomegranates and souvenirs related to their province. But this is just a part of this year's program. The world's biggest pomegranate cake weighing 800 kilograms was showcased in the opening ceremony. An official pomegranate postal stamp was also unveiled. Pomegranate was the symbol of fertility in ancient Persian culture. It is still the main base for luxury dishes in Iran. So far Iranian experts have verified hundreds of types of the fruit which are classified based on the skin color, seeds and taste. Iran is known as the largest producer of pomegranate in the world. Iranians' heavenly fruit continues to win the hearts of its lovers as the pomegranate festival attracts crowds for a period of days.

Dolle Mol Tv: Belgium needs YOU!
he area of present-day Belgium has seen significant demographic, political and cultural upheavals over the course of two millennia. In the first century, the Romans, after defeating the local tribes, created the province of Gallia Belgica. A gradual immigration by Germanic Frankish tribes during the 5th century, brought the area under the rule of the Merovingian kingdom, which evolved into the Carolingian Empire in the 8th century. During the Middle Ages small feudal states emerged, many of which rejoined as the Burgundian Netherlands in the 14th and 15th centuries. Emperor Charles V completed the union of the Seventeen Provinces in the 1540s, and unofficially also controlled the Prince-Bishopric of Liège.[14] The Eighty Years' War (1568--1648) divided the area into the northern United Provinces ('federate' Belgica Foederata in Latin) and the Southern Netherlands ('royal' Belgica Regia). The latter were ruled successively by the Spanish and the Austrian Habsburgs and comprised most of modern Belgium. Until independence the area was sought after by numerous French conquerors and was the theatre of most Franco-Spanish and Franco-Austrian wars during the 17th and 18th centuries.[15] Following the campaigns of 1794 in the French Revolutionary Wars, the Low Countries — including territories that were never nominally under Habsburg rule, such as the Prince-Bishopric of Liège — were annexed by the French First Republic, ending Spanish-Austrian rule in the region. The ...

photo & video Philip Swinkels 2011 picture of the "Massacre of Innocents" used in video: Frans Hals Museum Haarlem Netherlands Massacre of the Innocent This immensely dramatic masterpiece was commissioned around 1590 by the States of Holland for Prince Maurits (1567--1625), son of the illustrious William the Silent, the official leader of the Dutch Revolt against Philip II, king of Spain. After a traitor shot down William in 1584, Maurits took over this responsible task from his father. At first sight, the painting depicts the biblical story of the Massacre of the Innocents, the infanticide in Bethlehem ordered by Herod, the King of Judea, whose intention it was to kill the newborn King of the Jews, Jesus Christ. But the artist, Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem (1562-1638), used the scene to convey a propagandistic message: it symbolizes the tyranny of Philips II, opposed by Maurits as commander-in-chief of the army, and the suffering of the Dutch people due to the barbaric behaviour of the Spanish soldiers. He shows us uncensored the aggressive approach of the perpetrators, but also the cruel revenge of the women on the left, who pull out the eyes of a soldier. Probably most horrific are the dead babies, whose pale skin colour comes across horribly real. Cornelis made a second version of this painting, for Maurits' Haarlem residence, now on show in the Frans Hals Museum in that city. The two resemble each other closely, but the later version is somewhat more subtle ...

China Will Never Rule the World
Author Troy Parfitt discusses his newest book, Why China Will Never Rule the World. Book Review: Troy Parfitt's Why China Will Never Rule the World By the time I get back to Shanghai in a couple of weeks, I will have been away in North America for more than three months. But lest I forget what life in that fair city is like, I just read Troy Parfitt's provocatively-titled book, Why China Will Never Rule the World, which will be published next week. The author is a Canadian native who spent a decade teaching English in Taiwan. As an observer "weary of hearing China being labeled a superpower or a great nation, with those terms seldom being qualified," he set off on a tour of the People's Republic to investigate and arrive at the truth. With notepad firmly in hand, the author travels through seventeen provinces, as well as Hong Kong, and ends the book with a trip through his long-time home of Taiwan. From the beginning, I found myself shaking my head in rueful recognition of his clear-eyed travelogue: I, too, have had many of his experiences, ranging from the unpleasant boat tour down the Yangtze Rive to unhelpful travel agencies and hotel receptionists who don't even know the name of the street on which they are located. Many are the times that I have been irritated and shouted back at insulting remarks about or aimed at the foreigner (me). And, like the author, I have laughed in puzzlement at many of the hilarious translations of signs in public places, and failed to ...

Insurrection: the Dutch Revolt
From Wiki: The Dutch Revolt (1566 or 1568--1648) was the successful revolt of the Protestant Seventeen Provinces of the defunct Duchy of Burgundy in the Low Countries against the ardent militant religious policies of Roman Catholicism pressed by Philip II of Spain. The religious 'clash of cultures' built up gradually but inexorably into outbursts of violence against the perceived repression of the Habsburg Crown. These tensions led to the formation of the independent Dutch Republic. The first leader was William of Orange, followed by several of his descendants and relations. This revolt was one of the first successful secessions in Europe, and led to one of the first European republics of the modern era, the United Provinces. King Philip was initially successful in suppressing the rebellion. In 1572, however, the rebels captured Brielle and the rebellion resurged. The northern provinces became independent, first de facto, and in 1648 de jure. During the revolt, the United Provinces of the Netherlands, better known as the Dutch Republic, rapidly grew to become a world power through its merchant shipping and experienced a period of economic, scientific, and cultural growth. The Southern Netherlands (situated in modern-day Belgium, Luxembourg, northern France and southern Netherlands) remained under Spanish rule. The continuous heavy-handed rule by the Habsburgs in the south caused many of its financial, intellectual, and cultural elite to flee north, contributing to the ...

It is also the capital of the province of North Holland, which at one time was one of the most powerful of the seven provinces of the Dutch Republic. The city is located on the river Spaarne, about 20 km west of Amsterdam and near the coastal dunes. It has been the historical center of the tulip bulb-growing district for centuries and bears the nickname 'Bloemenstad' (flower city), for this reason.

Art + Artists: Choichun Leung: Mixed Media Paintings / SML
Choichun Leung talks to SML about her mixed media paintings during the 13th Annual Art Under the Bridge Festival organized by the Dumbo Arts Center in New York City in 2009.
Choichun's work appears to have very severe typographic influences, and I originally thought that she was trained as a graphic designer. So I was surprised to learn during the interview that she was trained in metal-smithing. It's great to meet a Chinese artist living in New York!

Choichun Leung left Wales when she was seventeen to pursue a degree in metal-smithing at Loughborough college of Art and Design in the UK, afterwhich she studied Buddhist iconography in both Beijing and the Yangkung caves in China's Shanxi province. In 1988 she moved to London where she studied under the Ray Man Chinese Orchestra as a percussionist and a student of the Gu-qin - a traditional Chinese bass zither. Leung worked in Hong Kong as a background artist for animation film before returning to London in 1992 where she received a grant and Gold Award from the Prince of Wales' Youth Business Trust for the most innovative new business of the year: a line of symbolic art products using the traditional technique of Chinese paper cutting.
With music and the arts always hand in hand, Leung came to New York in 1994 where she began painting seriously, worked as an assistant to artist Peter Max, and studied music composition. From that point forward, Choichun's artwork has been inextricably entwined with her interest in music and have continued to influence each other.
As the single mother of a young daughter, Choichun moved to Germany in 2002 to write music, perform and collaborate on an audio/visual project based in Koln. Upon the invitation of a gallery in 2006 she returned to New York. Most recently Choichun has been featured in two solo exhibitions at JLA Baxter House in Manhattan and will take part in a group showing in Hamburg in November 2008. Choichun currently lives in Brooklyn, NYC .
Artist Statement Our lives are as long as we remember. Our memories are imbedded in us like DNA. But what of lives that through trauma or age have lost memory? What of the interplay of conscious thought and the sub-conscious? Which one really drives the show? My paintings are like rorschach tests in reverse, a psychological diary of that moment in time, an investigation of the relationship between past and present, reality and illusion and in effect a blue print to the past self. Through the symbolisms revealed, and the stories or objects we project into the abstract, we expose another layer of ourselves and in turn provide clues to what may not be fully aware. My paintings are simple traces of that activity, void of any meaning, but imbedded with the years of experience that shapes us, yet also holds us hostage.
Choichun never paints from sketches but instead allows the process and medium dictate. Each application is an expressive gesture evoking the emotion and inner psychology of that moment, a conflicted excavation of what may be hidden or imagined. The script like lines emerge as a non-cognitive language or what she has come to identify as 'glyphs' - a pictographic personal alphabet; where 'glyphs' document the days, weeks and months spent on a piece. The one actual reference that Choichun can identify in her work after the fact springs from her background in music and her fascination with its chaotic notes and interpretive patterns. These can be seen in the work's fine, rhythmic and frenetic lines as well as in the heavier, poured-on, black & white 'mono-glyphs' which overtake the paintings like visual representations of a sound. Choichun paints on both wood panels and canvas, using liquid acrylic, aerosol, oil bars and thread . With sticks, brushes, trowels and vessels: applying the paint and then scratching through the layers to reveal what is underneath, scripting with ‘glyphs’ throughout, painting over, sanding down and repeating this process until an image is revealed or another is hidden.

Tortured by the Chinese Regime
WONG:
As the curtain came down on the Olympics yesterday, the Falun Dafa Info Center, released a report on the abuse of Falun Gong followers by the Chinese regime.
FDI says over 8,000 Falun Gong practitioners were arrested in the months leading up to the Olympics.
But for the families of two practitioners in Shandong Province it was the last time they would see their loved ones alive. Police illegally searched Falun Gong practitioner Liu Xiumei's home in Guanzhuandian village. She was taken to the Zhucheng City Detention Center and seventeen days later she was dead. No details of her death have been released to her family.
In a separate incident, 58 year-old Zhong Zhenfu was picked up by police in a sweep. His arms and legs were strapped to "iron chairs” and then interrogated.Three days later Mr. Zhong was taken to the Pingdu City Detention Center where sources say he was placed in a metal cage and beaten with metal wires.Unable to recover from his injuries, he passed away on July 20th.
The FDI is calling on the international community to investigate the facts.

Ferries to Spain: ferriesspain.net Andalusia is an autonomous community of Spain and recognized as a historical nationality. It is the most populous (8285692 inhabitants in 2009) and the second largest, in terms of land area, of the seventeen autonomous communities of the Kingdom of Spain. Its capital and largest city is Seville. The region is divided into eight provinces: Huelva, Seville, Cádiz, Córdoba, Málaga, Jaén, Granada and Almería. Andalusia is in the south of the Iberian peninsula, immediately south of the autonomous communities of Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha; west of the autonomous community of Murcia and the Mediterranean Sea; east of Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean; and north of the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Spain from Morocco, and the Atlantic Ocean. The small British overseas territory of Gibraltar shares a three-quarter-mile land border with the Andalusian province of Cádiz at the eastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar. Andalusia has three major geographic subregions. In the north, the mountainous Sierra Morena separates Andalusia from the plains of Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha on Spain's Meseta Central. South of that, one can distinguish Upper Andalusia, generally the Baetic Cordillera, from Lower Andalusia with its Baetic Depression of the valley of the Guadalquivir.
