About the Speech: At this event, Commissioner Rehn gave a keynote address on the economic governance debate in Europe and discussed its implications for the EU, its member states and its citizens. Following two communications on the topic earlier in the year, the European Commission put forward a package of six regulatory legislative proposals on 29 September. Separately, at the European Council Summit on 28-29 October, EU heads of state and government endorsed the final report of Herman Van Rompuy's Task Force on Economic Governance. In order to ensure the implementation of new arrangements as soon as possible, the objective is now for the Council and the European Parliament to reach agreement by summer 2011 on the Commission's legislative proposals. About the Speaker: Olli Rehn is the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs. Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon (IFPAL) is an organisation founded in June 2009 to call for a No vote in the imminent second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, on the grounds that the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) is inimical to the interests of the Palestinian people and detrimental to Ireland's relationship with the Arab and Islamic world. IFPAL introduced itself by means of a demonstration outside the EU Parliament Offices in Dublin's Molesworth Street on 9th July. This date was chosen because it was the fifth anniversary of the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) determining the illegality of Israel's construction of a Wall on occupied Palestinian territory, and insisting that third states should offer Israel no "aid or assistance" in the construction of that Wall, nor should they "recognise the illegal situation resulting from the construction of the Wall." IFPAL distributed leaflets citing Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern's admission on 11th March 2008 that Israel's blockade of Gaza "constitutes collective punishment and is illegal under international humanitarian law" and querying why Israel nonetheless continues to receive trading privileges under the Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement, Article 2 of which makes such privileges conditional on "respect for human rights and democratic principles"

Following an appeal signed by 16 MEPs from the Left Group in the European Parliament (GUE/NGL), this week (21 to 26 June) has been designated as a "Week of Protest and Solidarity" across Europe - in opposition to the attacks on working people across Europe and in solidarity with the struggle in Greece. Protest and solidarity actions are taking place across Europe around the demands of: - Workers, pensioners, the unemployed, students, youth and those socially excluded must not pay for the crisis - Make the super rich and bankers pay - Solidarity with the working people of Greece and for the unity of working people across Europe - No cutbacks, wage cuts, unemployment & increases in the retirement age - No to privatisation of public services - End the dictatorship of the financial markets, credit ratings institutions and IMF - Stop the bailouts of the banks - nationalise the banks and financial institutions in the interests of working people - Explaining the need for united action across Europe, Nikolaos Chountis, MEP for Syriza in Greece, declared: "Greece is the guinea pig for imposing very harsh austerity measures to achieve not only fiscal discipline imposed by the Stability Pact, but also to achieve competitiveness with "Chinese terms", ie to drop the labour costs and reduce labour and social rights. Jerzey Buzek, President of the European Parliament, says he welcomes the 'yes' vote of the Irish people in Friday's referendum on the Lisbon Treaty that shapes the future of cooperation among the 27 member states of the European Union. According to the Irish Independent newspapers, early indications from around the country suggest there has been a strong swing to the Yes side. The final results will be announced by early evening on Saturday. With boxes open around the country some initial tallies are starting to come in, it's very early days but many areas are showing strong support for the Yes side. In Galway East and West, Carlow/Kilkenny, Mayo and Clare there are indications that it could be 2 to 1 in favour, while Dublin South West which voted No last time around is swinging to Yes. An exit poll from Fine Gael predicts a 60 / 40 win for the Yes side. So if the Fine Gael poll and early indications are right it'll be a huge relief for the Government, and the rest of the Yes side.

The Fine Gael MEP for Dublin told the European Parliament that the debate on the Air Travel Crisis held this morning was far too polite. In the presence of the Commissioner for Transport and the Spanish President of the Council of Ministers Mr Mitchell said that some train stations in Europe were closing information outlets thereby causing longer queues, internet booking is not functioning as it should, airlines are, in many cases, not giving any information and airport and seaport authorities are not being as proactive as they should be. People are queuing for two hours just to be told that there are no train places he said. I do not expect the Commission or the Council to solve all problems, nor do I share the criticism of their aviation policies. However both the Commission and the Council, through the 27 Member States, could be putting on pressure for more information outlets and assistance for traveller. We cannot just abandon the travelling public.
