The tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru holds that honor. At only 8.1 sq. miles, with a population of less than 10000, the country's inhabitants have virtually become giants. Ninety-five percent of the island's adult population is overweight, and 85 percent of the male adult population is obese, according to ABC News. However, island natives haven't always been this fat. According to ABC, it wasn't until they began importing Western food that the population's size exploded. Now half of Nauruans suffer from Type II diabetes.

Nauru
Nauru has a long association with Australia. From being a United Nations trust territory administered by Australia to becoming one of the worlds largest sources of phosphate mined by Australian companies to an Australian off-shore detention centre for asylum seekers. Nauru is now the world's smallest republic covering just 21 square kilometres. This film looks at Nauru in 1962 when they had the highest per-capita income in the world but when the depletion of the countries phosphate resources was already on the horizon meaning the only industry they had, and the only source of foreign investment, was coming to an end. Having become accustomed to the ways of the modern, industrialised world but with no way of supporting themselves how will they maintain their lifestyle? Will the people need to abandon their island home and what role will Australia play in their future? Made by The Commonwealth Film Unit 1962. Directed by Frank Bagnall.

Australia refugee centre could boost Nauru
Hundreds of refugees are being flown to the small Pacific island of Nauru as part of a new immigration policy in Australia. Asylum seekers must now be processed offshore. Nauru
Nauru is a Country less Travelled because it is so far away, being right on the equator, because it is bankrupt and because it is full of wrecked Landrovers and ghostly phosphate mining machinery. Yet it's a fascinating island republic with a coastline of just 22 km and a population of 10000 who were the second richest nation on earth some 15 years ago. Nauru's wealth was bird droppings: phosphate used in fertiliser production. Now it's gone there is nothing to replace it except for the detention centre housing refugees caught attempting to enter Australia by boat. They talk to some of the last refugees. Finally Catherine and John are mistaken for TidyTown judges.
