THE BOX PRO - Round3 & Round4
Just eight riders remain in contention for event number two on the International BodyBoard World Tour, The Box Pro, with quarter-final placings being decided today in heaving four-to-six feet (two-metre) waves.
Local Ryan Hardy (Margaret River, WA), reigning Men’s IBA World Tour champion Amaury Lavernhe (REU) and multiple Men’s IBA World Tour champion, Guilherme Tamega (BRA) were among the stand-outs on a day that saw blood lost to the reef and at least one board broken in two.
Former two-time IBA world champion Damien King (Port Macquarie, NSW, AUS) received medical attention for gashes to his face after being driven head-first into the reef just moments into his heat versus Mark McCarthy (ZAF), Dave Winchester (AUS) and Joe Clarke (AUS).
The 32 year-old was desperately chasing a win to solidify a Round 4 berth and gave it everything he had when the rogue wave appeared.
“It (the wave) came through in the first five or 10 seconds of the heat and I could see it was hitting wide, but I thought it could be a good one so I thought ‘I’ll go for it’,” explained King.
“I backdoored it and I hit my face on the bottom faster than you can blink. I just got smashed, I hit real hard. I’m just lucky I didn’t hit my teeth. I knew I needed to win that heat to stay in the comp so I just kept my focus and stayed out there. You can’t get rattled when that sort of stuff happens, you need to expect it somewhere like the Box. Unfortunately things didn’t go my way today.”
South African, Jared Houston (ZAF), found himself in a unique situation; the 21 year-old had his board split apart after an aerial attempt gone awry. Houston punched a huge air-forward off a wedging Box end-section and came down hard over the front of his board. It caved in beneath him, buckling under the pressure, and folded straight down the middle.
“I saw that section and just went for it,” he explained. “I came down so hard my arms hit under water, I was still holding onto my board so I knew straight away it had snapped. I tried to ride out of it, but there was no way that was happening.”
Houston borrowed another board from someone waiting in the channel, but the relief was short lived. It was two inches shorter than what he normally rides.
“I was kinda going nowhere with it, then the guys on the ski went and picked up my back-up board and brought that to me, but I’d never ridden that either, it had no wax on it, it was so slippery. So the whole heat I was just trying to make the most of a pretty bad situation,” said Houston.
Houston regrouped to advance into the quarter-finals, where he has now drawn fellow countryman, Mark McCarthy (ZAF), in an all South African match-up. The only time the pair have faced off at the elite level occurred at Pipeline two years ago with Houston getting the nod.
Tamega was fortunate to survive his encounter versus IBA event wildcard, Mitch Rawlins (Broadbeach, Qld, AUS). The six-time world champion was combed for most of the 25-minute encounter, requiring two excellent scores to have a hope of progressing.
Rawlins went ballistic early, putting one of the sport’s biggest names on the ropes with a near perfect 9.6 out of a possible perfect 10 for an incredible barrel followed by a huge, text-book invert air.
With the highest individual wave-score of the event to his name, Rawlins then solidified his position with a second good scoring wave of 5.8 points and looked to have the heat locked away. But Tamega scraped back into contention registering a 7.9 ride, then with nothing to lose in the final seconds, caught the only breaking wave and pulled a huge backflip to take the win.
“I was just waiting for the heat to be over,” said Tamega. “This little wave came to me and I thought, ‘Oh, I might as well catch this one’. It formed on the inside and gave me the biggest ramp ever and I thought, ‘Whoa!’ I just went for it and it worked, I didn’t think the judges would give it me though, I heard the score and it was just too good to be true.”
Hawaiian, Jeff Hubbard is looking down the barrel at a possible trifecta, the 35 year-old bodyboarding vet is coming off two consecutive wins. One at the final event of 2010 at Fronton in the Canary Islands and the first event on the 2011 tour held in his backyard at Pipe in February.
Things did not go the Hawaiian’s way the last time Hubbard competed at The Box more than eight years ago, he was eliminated early from the event in much smaller conditions.
“It’s one of those things, you just gotta pretend those other wins don’t exist and just keep going for it otherwise it creates too much pressure. So my approach is in every heat is like I’m starting from scratch,” said Hubbard.
“I’m pretty amped because there’s good waves coming, it’s going to be bigger than last time I competed here, it’s going to really help us. Plus it’s going to be more consistent, so you’ll see all the guys going for it, pushi

IBA PIPELINE PRO 2011 - Competition Day One

Thursday, February 17th (Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii):
Professional bodyboarding has returned to Hawaii’s North Shore with the commencement of Event 1 on the 2011 IBA World Tour, the IBA Pipeline Pro that kicked off in clean two-metres waves today.
The revamped tour, which sees eight major global Grand Slam Series events in exciting and dangerous locations, has drawn out the who’s who of big name stars and budding pros.
Among the standout performers on Day 1 was USA transplant, Brian Wise (USA), a formidable 90s performer who blasted his way through three rounds of competition in his first contest in three years.
Wise spun and rolled his way through a marathon day that included a pre-event warm-up session when he practised without fins or leash. The former finalist (1996) was clearly stoked to be back in the competitive arena, and registered the day’s highest individual wave score, an 8.75 out of a possible perfect 10, on route to Round 4.
“The waves are really contestable. We have good ramps and really nice, long drawn out waves and I think we’ll get better waves right through out this contest,” said Wise.
“I’ve been back on the North Shore since October and I’ve had so many Pipe days, concentrating on my riding, working to improve my style and my manoeuvres,” he added.
Nostalgia was blended with first-time experience of Australian brothers, Charles and Harley Ward. The pair, who regularly tackle the cold, life-threatening waves of their local break Shipstern Bluff, unknowingly created history when they became the first Tasmanian riders to compete at the elite level.
Having successfully won their way through the trials held at Sandy Beach on Oahu’s South side on Sunday, the brothers progressed through to Rounds two and three respectively in the main event, before being eliminated.
Many other riders remain in the draw to represent their national ‘green n’ gold’ colours, but none can claim to be from the infamous “Apple Isle”.
“We came here to get good surf and try our best in the competition. I think everyone at home is pretty stoked we made it into the main event. We tried last year, but didn’t get in. Now this is the first event we’ve qualified for,” said Charles.
“Tassie has variety of waves, but obviously the water’s a lot warmer here, it’s so bloody cold at home! It’s not crowded at all at home, but crowded here, so there are same major differences. And the overall level of riding is higher in Hawaii. In fact, the level is higher than just about anywhere else we’ve ever travelled,” he said.
The day’s highest two-wave combined heat score belonged to South African campaigner, Sacha Specker (ZAF) who within five minutes of his 20-minute encounter, had secured an 8.25 and 7.5 to be sitting comfortably in front on a combined total of 15.75 out of a possible 20.
Speckers opponents, Alvaro Jurado (ESP), Kalani Lattanzi (BRA) and Keahi Parker (Haw) were left to scrap for the minor placing, with Parker getting the nod and advancing behind Specker in second position.
“I was lucky those waves came straight to me at the start of the heat. From there I didn’t need to chase any more scores. I actually played it really safe. I picked the biggest waves and just did what the judges wanted to see - clean, big moves,” explained Specker.
Fellow South African, former two-time Pipeline Pro winner, Andre Botha (ZAF), was a surprise elimination, bowing out in Round 3 in equal 49th place. Botha became the youngest-ever champion of the event when he first stormed the victory dais aged 17 in 1998.
Today the South African looked sharp in his Round 2 debut, advancing easily in first place ahead of Hawaiian Alex Brown (Haw), Portugal’s Joao Neiva (PRT) and Mark Klein (USA) of the United States.
His fortunes were reversed this afternoon, however, the 28 year-old going down in less than spectacular fashion, ending his heat in a disappointing last place to Jacob Pembrook (Haw), Bud Miyamoto (Haw) and Elliot Morales (CNY).
Former two-time runner-up, Babby Quino was also a surprise loss. The Puerto Rican with a reputation for his big-wave prowess has battled recurring injury and looked to be in good form before bowing out in third place to
Aussie duo Josh Garner (AUS) and Alex Halsey (AUS) in Round 2.
Competition is expected to resume in similar conditions tomorrow, Friday Feb 18th. Organisers will make a call on proceedings at 07:00 local time for a possible 08:00 start.
All the action from the IBA Pipeline Pro is available for viewing via the LIVE webcast at www.ibaworldtour.com. It is the most ambitious ever undertaken by the IBA with multi-camera angles and replays just some of the improved features.
Hawaiian fans can see the action via Oceanic Cable channel 16 (OC 16, Hawaii) and FUEL TV will broadcast finals action in Australia. Viewers should check their local

Shanghai Chinese New Year 2011
Chinese New Year in Shanghai 2011. Fireworks as seen from 15th floor balcony. An upstairs neighbor in the building spent ~$10000 on fireworks and lit them off from downstairs ... exploding more or less just a few feet off our balcony. This video was shot at midnight on Chinese New Years Eve with my hand just slightly exposed through an opening in the balcony doors. One spark actually shot between the cracked doors and you can see the camera shake. And I thought they were supposed to be banning fireworks this year in Shanghai???
