The Battle of the Ruhr was a 5-month long campaign of strategic bombing during the Second World War against the Nazi Germany Ruhr Area, which had coke plants, steelworks, and 10 synthetic oil plants. The campaign bombed twenty-six major Combined Bomber Offensive targets. The targets included the Krupp armament works (Essen), the Nordstern synthetic-oil plant (Gelsenkirchen), and the Rheinmetal-Borsig plant in Düsseldorf. The latter was safely evacuated during the Battle of the Ruhr. Although not strictly part of the Ruhr area, the battle of the Ruhr included other cities such as Cologne which were within the Rhine-Ruhr region and considered part of the same "industrial complex". Some targets were not sites of heavy industrial production but part of the production and movement of materiel.
Although the Ruhr had always been a target for the RAF from the start of the war, the organized defences and the large amount of industrial pollutants produced that gave a semi-permanent smog or industrial haze hampered accurate bombing. Before the Battle of the Ruhr ended, Operation Gomorrah began the "Battle of Hamburg". Even after this switch of focus to Hamburg, there would be further raids on the Ruhr area by the RAF in part to keep German defences dispersed, just as there had been raids on areas other than the Ruhr during the battle.

Amongst the Ice Floes of Lancaster Sound: Harp seals and polar bears live amongst the endlessly changing sea ice north of Baffin Island. Fata Morgana (the Arctic mirage) deceives the eye. Gulls and Murres breed on the precipitous cliffs of Prince Leopold Island, close to the rich fishing grounds. The last known relic of the Franklin's abortive 1845 expedition are on Beechey Island. Close to the Croker Glacier on Devon Island, seals haul up onto the ice, and a polar bear kill is marked by blood. Devon Island, north of the sound, is significantly bigger than United Kingdom, yet uninhabited. Across Lancaster Sound, on Somerset Island, is the ruined Hudson's Bay Company trading post at Port Leopold and an abandoned Royal Canadian Mounted Police Post at Dundas Harbour. Musk oxen graze the sparse tundra vegetation here.James Ross wintered at Port Leopold in 1849 during his search for Franklin.
After Franklin's expedition was lured to its death, searchers for the lost expedition mapped the channels and islands, which proved there were North West Passages of sorts, but ice clogged and largely unusable by ships. These islands and sounds have, of course, names given them by European explorers.
Lancaster Sound was named in 1616 by William Baffin in honour of one of his benefactors. The Inuktitut name, Tallurutiup gets its name from Talluruti (Dundas Harbour) and means "a woman's chin with tattoos on"......perhaps referring to crevasses and streaks on the land.
The three Nunavut communities of Resolute, Arctic Bay and Pond Inlet depend on the waters of Lancaster Sound for their economic and cultural wellbeing.

Lancaster Sound
Lancaster Sound (Inuktitut ᑕᓪᓗᕈᑎᐅᑉ ᑕᕆᐅᖓ Tallurutiup Tariunga) is a body of water in Qikiqtaaluk, Nunavut, Canada. It is located between Devon Island and Baffin Island, forming the eastern entrance to the Parry Channel and the Northwest Passage. East of the sound lies Baffin Bay; to the west lies Viscount Melville Sound. Further west a traveler would enter the McClure Strait before heading into the Arctic Ocean.
Lancaster Sound was named in 1616 by explorer William Baffin for Sir James Lancaster, one of the three main financial supporters of his exploratory expeditions. The abortive expedition by the British explorer John Ross in 1818 ended when he saw what he believed were mountains blocking the end of Lancaster Sound. In 1819 William Edward Parry got through it and went as far west as Melville Island. The sound was thoroughly explored during an extensive aerial mapping program of Northern Canada by the Canadian Government which took from the 1930s until the late 1950s to complete. Coincidentally, the type of aircraft that was used to complete the mapping program was the Avro Lancaster, a World War II heavy bomber which had been converted for mapping.

Avro Lancaster
The Avro Lancaster is a British four-engined Second World War heavy bomber designed and built by Avro for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It first saw active service with RAF Bomber Command in 1942 and, as the strategic bombing offensive over Europe gathered momentum, it was the central implement for the night-time bombing campaigns that followed. It became the main heavy bomber used by the RAF, the RCAF, and squadrons from other Commonwealth and European countries serving within the RAF, overshadowing its close contemporaries the Handley Page Halifax and Short Stirling. The "Lanc", as it was affectionately known, thus became one of the more famous and most successful of the Second World War night bombers, "delivering 608,612 long tons of bombs in 156,000 sorties." The Lancaster, an evolution of the troublesome Avro Manchester, was designed by Roy Chadwick and was powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlins, or, in one version, Bristol Hercules engines.
A long, unobstructed bomb bay meant that the Lancaster could take the largest bombs used by the RAF, including the 4,000 lb (1,800 kg), 8,000 lb (3,600 kg), and 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) blockbusters, loads often supplemented with smaller bombs or incendiaries. The versatility of the Lancaster was such that it was chosen to equip 617 Squadron and was modified to carry the Upkeep "Bouncing bomb" designed by Barnes Wallis for Operation Chastise, the attack on Germany Ruhr Valley dams. Although the Lancaster was primarily a night bomber, it excelled in many other roles, including daylight precision bombing: in the latter role some Lancasters were adapted to carry the 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) Tallboy and then the 22,000 lb (10,000 kg) Grand Slam earthquake bombs (also designed by Wallis).

Even after this switch of focus to Hamburg, there would be further raids on the Ruhr area by the RAF in part to keep German defences dispersed, just as there had been raids on areas other than the Ruhr during the battle. -

Amongst the Ice Floes of Lancaster Sound: Harp seals and polar bears live amongst the endlessly changing sea ice north of Baffin Island. Fata Morgana (the Arctic mirage) deceives the eye. Gulls and Murres breed on the precipitous cliffs of Prince Leopold Island, close to the rich fishing grounds. The last known relic of the Franklin's abortive 1845 expedition are on Beechey Island. Close to the Croker Glacier on Devon Island, seals haul up onto the ice, and a polar bear kill is marked by blood. Devon Island, north of the sound, is significantly bigger than United Kingdom, yet uninhabited. Across Lancaster Sound, on Somerset Island, is the ruined Hudson's Bay Company trading post at Port Leopold and an abandoned Royal Canadian Mounted Police Post at Dundas Harbour. Musk oxen graze the sparse tundra vegetation here.James Ross wintered at Port Leopold in 1849 during his search for Franklin.
After Franklin's expedition was lured to its death, searchers for the lost expedition mapped the channels and islands, which proved there were North West Passages of sorts, but ice clogged and largely unusable by ships. These islands and sounds have, of course, names given them by European explorers.
Lancaster Sound was named in 1616 by William Baffin in honour of one of his benefactors. The Inuktitut name, Tallurutiup gets its name from Talluruti (Dundas Harbour) and means "a woman's chin with tattoos on"......perhaps referring to crevasses and streaks on the land.
The three Nunavut communities of Resolute, Arctic Bay and Pond Inlet depend on the waters of Lancaster Sound for their economic and cultural wellbeing.

Over 100 years later, that destiny has been fulfilled in a city that preserves the great chapters of Australia’s history and continues to write the future pages of the nation’s story.

Cheesesteaks and pretzels aside, you'll be amazed at the comprehensive choice of food available in the city, from fine dining to ethnic cuisine. This eclectic mix is visible in over 100 multi-ethnic neighbourhoods, encompassing everything from the bustling Italian market to African-American festivals and the traditional Amish community, who sell produce and foodstuffs in Reading Terminal Market, a purveyor of fresh farm food since 1892.
This diversity has also helped produce some legendary musicians. In fact, few would argue that Philly's musical heritage could rival that of New York. Since colonial times, it has been a melting pot of many forms of music from classical to contemporary. Philadelphia was also the home of Dick Clark's famous American Bandstand TV show, which showcased some of America's leading singers and musicians in the 1960's, such as Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell, themselves natives of Philly's south side. 'Me and Mrs Jones', 'Love Train' and the Three Degrees' 'When Will I See You Again' were all products of TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia), which followed Motown into the 1970s as the shining light of soul music.
Sightseers have plenty to feast their eyes on, not least Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Meanwhile, the 2012 opening of the Barnes Foundation means that, together with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the refurbished Rodin Museum, Philadelphia is home to one of the world's finest art collections, including the largest collection of Renoirs outside Paris and more Cézanne's than all the Parisian museums put together.
However, no trip to the city would be complete without a visit to the Rocky statue, at the base of the Museum of Art steps, which featured iconically in the Rocky movies. This landmark attracts more visitors than all of Philly's museums and art galleries. Meanwhile, take time to wander around the Old City District where former foundries, factories and warehouses have been turned into boutiques, art galleries and restaurants, with historic tours also available.
For those looking to explore futher afield, Philadelphia is the gateway into Pennsylvania Dutch Country to the west, the ski resorts of the Pocono Mountains to the north, and the Delaware Peninsula and Atlantic Seaboard beaches to the south east.
It's easy to see why Philly rates so highly when compared with New York just an hour or two to the north. Even the American comedian, writer and actor WC Fields wanted to have on his gravestone "Here lies WC Fields but I'd rather be living in Philadelphia."

Philadelphia was once dubbed the, "Athens of the Americas," as it was the undisputed cultural centre of the New World. Today, it remains one of America's most historical cities; quite significant in a country officially only 230 years old. Philadelphia is where the American War of Independence began and ended, with the creation and signing of the Constitution. But Philly is so much more than just a beacon of American liberty.
Philadelphia also has a vibrant arts scene, diverse population, renowned orchestra, plus world-class museums and some fantastic restaurants. It is said Philadelphia is the only place in America where you could feed your brain and your belly at the same time and you only have to taste a Philly Cheesesteak once to understand that statement. Cheesesteaks and pretzels aside, you'll be amazed at the comprehensive choice of food available in the city, from fine dining to ethnic cuisine. This eclectic mix is visible in over 100 multi-ethnic neighbourhoods, encompassing everything from the bustling Italian market to African-American festivals and the traditional Amish community, who sell produce and foodstuffs in Reading Terminal Market, a purveyor of fresh farm food since 1892.
This diversity has also helped produce some legendary musicians. In fact, few would argue that Philly's musical heritage could rival that of New York. Since colonial times, it has been a melting pot of many forms of music from classical to contemporary. Philadelphia was also the home of Dick Clark's famous American Bandstand TV show, which showcased some of America's leading singers and musicians in the 1960's, such as Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell, themselves natives of Philly's south side. 'Me and Mrs Jones', 'Love Train' and the Three Degrees' 'When Will I See You Again' were all products of TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia), which followed Motown into the 1970s as the shining light of soul music.
Sightseers have plenty to feast their eyes on, not least Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Meanwhile, the 2012 opening of the Barnes Foundation means that, together with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the refurbished Rodin Museum, Philadelphia is home to one of the world's finest art collections, including the largest collection of Renoirs outside Paris and more Cézanne's than all the Parisian museums put together.
However, no trip to the city would be complete without a visit to the Rocky statue, at the base of the Museum of Art steps, which featured iconically in the Rocky movies. This landmark attracts more visitors than all of Philly's museums and art galleries. Meanwhile, take time to wander around the Old City District where former foundries, factories and warehouses have been turned into boutiques, art galleries and restaurants, with historic tours also available.
For those looking to explore futher afield, Philadelphia is the gateway into Pennsylvania Dutch Country to the west, the ski resorts of the Pocono Mountains to the north, and the Delaware Peninsula and Atlantic Seaboard beaches to the south east.
It's easy to see why Philly rates so highly when compared with New York just an hour or two to the north. Even the American comedian, writer and actor WC Fields wanted to have on his gravestone "Here lies WC Fields but I'd rather be living in Philadelphia."

Hey guys this is the sixth video in my series, Tour Guide for the Car Guy. In this series I will feature things like car meets, amazing driving roads, museums and plenty more that are accessible at any given time of the year. Im avoiding featuring events that are date specific only because not everyone will be able to get a chance to attend those events when they're in that city. I'm trying to keep it broad enough that when you're visiting a place like Tokyo or Los Angeles, you'd have no problem going to these locations. Does that make sense? lol
This time we visit the Willow Springs Raceway just north of Los Angeles, California!
I'm no filmmaker or videographer so please bare with me. Any suggestions on improving video entertain please leave in the comments and I will do my best to implicate them into the next video.

The Battle of the Ruhr was a 5-month long campaign of strategic bombing during the Second World War against the Nazi Germany Ruhr Area, which had coke plants, steelworks, and 10 synthetic oil plants. The campaign bombed twenty-six major Combined Bomber Offensive targets. The targets included the Krupp armament works (Essen), the Nordstern synthetic-oil plant (Gelsenkirchen), and the Rheinmetal-Borsig plant in Düsseldorf. Amongst the Ice Floes of Lancaster Sound: Harp seals and polar bears live amongst the endlessly changing sea ice north of Baffin Island. Fata Morgana (the Arctic mirage) deceives the eye. Gulls and Murres breed on the precipitous cliffs of Prince Leopold Island, close to the rich fishing grounds. The last known relic of the Franklin's abortive 1845 expedition are on Beechey Island. Close to the Croker Glacier on Devon Island, seals haul up onto the ice, and a polar bear kill is marked by blood. Devon Island, north of the sound, is significantly bigger than United Kingdom, yet uninhabited. Across Lancaster Sound, on Somerset Island, is the ruined Hudson's Bay Company trading post at Port Leopold and an abandoned Royal Canadian Mounted Police Post at Dundas Harbour. Musk oxen graze ...

Although the Ruhr had always been a target for the RAF from the start of the war, the organized defences and the large amount of industrial pollutants produced that gave a semi-permanent smog or industrial haze hampered accurate bombing. Before the Battle of the Ruhr ended, Operation Gomorrah began the "Battle of Hamburg". Even after this switch of focus to Hamburg, there would be further raids on the Ruhr area by the RAF in part to keep German defences dispersed, just as there had been raids on areas other than the Ruhr during the battle.

These islands and sounds have, of course, names given them by European explorers.
Lancaster Sound was named in 1616 by William Baffin in honour of one of his benefactors. The Inuktitut name, Tallurutiup gets its name from Talluruti (Dundas Harbour) and means "a woman's chin with tattoos on"......perhaps referring to crevasses and streaks on the land.
The three Nunavut communities of Resolute, Arctic Bay and Pond Inlet depend on the waters of Lancaster Sound for their economic and cultural wellbeing.

I've reseeded a few Renaissance shows lately to pay tribute to the recently passed Michael Dunford, and other than a 1978 BBC show from London, UK (which has been officially released on CD), this is probably the nicest one I have, between sound and music quality, that isn't already on this tracker.
Since Christmas is the most celebrated holiday of the year around the world, I wanted to share the best recording I have (so far, that may change soon, let's hope...) of the best female singer I've ever heard. This was recorded during the "Song For All Seasons" tour which was very enjoyable.

Arktisveteran John Barrow sprach gar vom drohenden nationalen Selbstmord. Im Jahr 1845 wollte auch die Admiralität die drohende Schmach nicht länger riskieren und ernannte Sir John Franklin zum Kommandanten einer weiteren Expedition. Franklin hatte sich in den 30iger Jahren durch die Erforschung großer Teile der Nordküste des Kontinents einigen Ruhm erworben. In seiner letzten Stellung als Gouverneur von Tasmanien war er weder besonders aufgefallen noch sonderlich beliebt. Der neue Auftrag stellte also die letzte Chance für den betagten Franklin dar. Er hatte Order, durch den Lancaster Sound in den arktischen Archipel vorzudringen. Er war mit der Seefahrt in dieser Gegend nicht vertraut, von seinen Offizieren kannte sich dort nur der Kapitän der Terror, F. R. M. Crozier dort aus. SCHEITERN AUSGESCHLOSSEN. Im Mai 1845 stechen die Terror mit 134 Mann Besatzung in See. Bis Grönland begleitet sie ein Transportschiff. Besonders gut scheint es um die Gesundheit der Mannschaft nicht gestanden zu haben. Ein Offizier des Transportschiffes notiert: "Sir John Franklin und seine Offiziere waren vom Erfolg überzeugt. Wenn es eine Passage gibt, werden sie alles riskieren, um das Eis zu bezwingen und über den Pazifik nach England zurückkehren, bedeckt mit unvergänglichem Ruhm." Die Vorräte an Lebensmitteln sollen für fünf Jahre ausreichen. Drei Jahre wartet die Nation vergeblich auf eine Nachricht. Einige Arktisveteranen bestehen nun auf einer Suchexpedition. Im Herbst 1848 erreicht James Clark Ross mit der Investigator und der Enterprise den Lancaster Sound. Am 11. September frieren die beiden Schiffe im Nordosten von Somerset Island ein. Um die Suche im Frühjahr fortsetzen zu können, werden Schlitten gebaut. Die Suchtrupps quälen sich durch Eis und Schnee, sieben Sterben an Skorbut und Entkräftung. Der Bericht von John Ross ließ in England Ernüchterung eintreten. Was nützte es, einen Wasserweg durch die Arktis nach Asien zu finden, wenn er ständig durch Eis blockiert war? Argumente von Krämerseelen. Great Britannia rules the sea. Wie soll man die Meere beherrschen, wenn man einen Teil noch nicht kennt, der sich zum Hohn unter einem Fleck verbirgt? Arktisveteran John Barrow sprach gar vom drohenden nationalen Selbstmord. Im Jahr 1845 wollte auch die Admiralität die drohende Schmach nicht länger riskieren und ernannte Sir John Franklin zum Kommandanten einer weiteren Expedition. Franklin hatte sich in den 30iger Jahren durch die Erforschung großer Teile der Nordküste des Kontinents einigen Ruhm erworben. In seiner letzten Stellung als Gouverneur von Tasmanien war er weder besonders aufgefallen noch sonderlich beliebt. Der neue Auftrag stellte also die letzte Chance für den betagten Franklin dar. Er hatte Order, durch den Lancaster Sound in den arktischen Archipel vorzudringen. Er war mit der Seefahrt in dieser Gegend nicht vertraut, von seinen Offizieren kannte sich dort nur der Kapitän der Terror, F. R. M. Crozier dort aus. SCHEITERN AUSGESCHLOSSEN. Im Mai 1845 stechen die Terror mit 134 Mann Besatzung in See. Bis Grönland begleitet sie ein Transportschiff. Besonders gut scheint es um die Gesundheit der Mannschaft nicht gestanden zu haben. Ein Offizier des Transportschiffes notiert: "Sir John Franklin und seine Offiziere waren vom Erfolg überzeugt. Wenn es eine Passage gibt, werden sie alles riskieren, um das Eis zu bezwingen und über den Pazifik nach England zurückkehren, bedeckt mit unvergänglichem Ruhm." Die Vorräte an Lebensmitteln sollen für fünf Jahre ausreichen. Drei Jahre wartet die Nation vergeblich auf eine Nachricht. Einige Arktisveteranen bestehen nun auf einer Suchexpedition. Im Herbst 1848 erreicht James Clark Ross mit der Investigator und der Enterprise den Lancaster Sound. Am 11. September frieren die beiden Schiffe im Nordosten von Somerset Island ein. Um die Suche im Frühjahr fortsetzen zu können, werden Schlitten gebaut. Die Suchtrupps quälen sich durch Eis und Schnee, sieben Sterben an Skorbut und Entkräftung.
