2011: A year of natural disasters
From tsunamis to tornadoes, from droughts to floods, 2011 was a particularly nasty year for natural disasters. While some parts of the globe were flooded by water, other parts were in dire need. Across the Horn of Africa, twelve million people were affected by the severe drought, which still grips the region, while many parts of the world were swept away by heavy downpour. As the year is coming to an end, the weather struck once more. Tropical Storm Washi hit the Philippines, killing more than 1000 people. And with the La Nina conditions still present, 2012 is promising to start just where 2011 left off. Al Jazeera's meteorologist Steff Gaulter takes a look back.

GRAND STAIRCASE Utah
Not far from the small village of Escalante in the state of Utah, a fascinating colorful landscape extends across several plateaus. Due to an unusual geological phenomenon that is similar to several steps, it is known as the Grand Staircase. This Nature Reserve is one of the most recent parks in the United States, its inauguration having taken place in 1996. The history of this natural region is as multi-layered as the rocks and walls of the land itself and it covers a wilderness of approximately 690000 hectares. It has 5 different vegetation zones and thus boasts a remarkable variety of indigenous trees and plants. It is divided into three vast areas, the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau and the Escalante Canyons. The region is also of great importance from both a cultural and historical point of view, as it contains traces of the ancient Native American Fremont and Anasazi Indians. Above the rock walls on the Kaiparowits Plateau, archaeologists discovered even older traces of human existence and objects that date back to Prehistoric times. The scenery is indeed similar to a huge and magnificent 'Grand Staircase' and is, without a doubt, a truly natural wonder of the world.

Big Pine & The Lower Keys — The Natural Keys
If you've had enough of an overcrowded and weary world, the islands of the Lower Keys are the place for you. Here, you can snorkel or dive over the Looe Key coral reef, ride a bicycle through Key Deer country, or take a fishing adventure in the back country or troll the deep blue waters beyond the reef. At the end of the day, you can trade stories with family and friends at one of this area's tiki bars, RV parks, campgrounds, quaint resorts or licensed vacation homes. The Earthy fragrance of mangrove forests and wetlands is never far away. The Lower Keys begin where the Florida Keys island chain takes a graceful westerly turn toward the sunset, shortly after the famous Seven Mile Bridge. It is a quiet region of small resorts, down-home restaurants, single-family homes, untrammeled wildernesses and rich history.

Kingdom of the Grizzlies: Natural Habitat Adventures,KATMAI ALASKA BEAR VIEWING, HD
www.nathab.com Highlights from 2010 season expeditions of Grizzlies: Kodiak to Katmai. Natural Habitat Adventures. The Coast of Katmai, on the Alaska Peninsula is the best place in the world to live, if you are a bear. This compilation of highlight scenes shows the incredible qualityof bear viewing, fantastic scenery, and diverse wildlife encountered on these expeditions. Though seeing wolves on these trips is not as sure as finding bears, the past few years have been exceptional as wolf populations are growing, and they learn that humans in this vast national park will not harm them. We saw wolves on 75% of our expeditions in 2010, many at extremely close distances, and often interacting with bears. Bears on the coast of katmai are as numerous as anywhere on the planet. Only coastal brown bears or grizzlies live here, as the habitat is not suitable for black bears. Hunting has been banned in Katmai National Park for many decades, and the few visitors who travel to this extremely remote and wild region of Alaska coexist with bears with mutual respect. This is likely the world's greatest bear viewing expedition! This 6 passanger expedition entails exploring a variety of bays and fjords on a vessel, and walking ashore each day to view bears, wolves, and other wildlife, as well as exploring Kodiak Island. Gauley Mountain, WV: the town of Ansted
America's Most Endangered Mountains - Gauley Mountain, WV Pledge to Help End Mountaintop Removal. Visit: www.iLoveMountains.org - - - COMMUNITY STORY - - - Until the mid-twentieth century, Ansted, West Virginia was a bustling coal camp. In 1950, the coal company that operated the local mine pulled out, leaving the community with a sense of economic depression. In the years that followed, residents banded together and reinspired a pride in their mountain region, eventually rebounding the local economy through a thriving tourism industry. The town of Ansted and surrounding Fayette County possess an abundance of natural and historical resources. The region boasts the stunning confluence of the New and Gauley Rivers at the head of the New River Gorge, one of the most beautiful sights on the Eastern seaboard. The county also hosts the watershed of these rivers, as well as stunning views of the New River Gorge and Kanawha County. Visitors from all over visit Fayette County to paddle and fish the local rivers and hike mountain trails. Bald eagles and Peregrine falcons soar across regions of hardwood forest rich with fauna and flora. And prime farmland and natural springs still provide food and water to the local communities. Father Roy Crist, the missioner of the New River Episcopal Ministry, became involved with efforts to save mountains when the county received an application for a mining permit on the backside of Gauley Mountain near the Gauley River and New River National ...

filmed between June and October.

Franzi (my girlfriend who waited a dozen times patiently until the timelapse was done)
UPDATE:
for all the tech geeks: I think I used all of my gear, no matter which lens or camera. The Moon at the end was captured with the Sony EX1 for example.
most shots were filmed with Canon 7D, 5D, 1D and different lenses
UPDATE:
just to clarify: "Chiemgau" is the region I live. It's between Munich and Salzburg in the very south of Bavaria. the shots were done in and around the "Chiemgau". I once wanted to create a 100% Chiemgau-Vid but didn't have the time to complete it. Maybe that is why I didn't upload it earlier...
in the end, it's still my home region :)

Colombia - Timelapse
Colombia - 2012
On my second holiday to this stunning country I decided to do the fatal thing and take my camera along with me. I thought about shooting a timelapse shot or two… I ended up filming on average 2 shots per day over the course of 4 weeks and it really became a working holiday!
I was a little nervous to begin with. I had been there before, but didn’t take my DSLR along with me. Now Colombia is vastly safer than it was 20-30 years ago – however its still a little risky if you don’t know where to go. Also, the very nature of timelapse means your stuck in one place for an hour or two and it could be a nice target for opportunists! Luckily I had my father in law and new camera assistant Moises - He even took a small baseball bat along with him on an evening in Bogota! In the end we weren’t troubled at all and I’m so glad I managed to capture so many great images.
Quite a bit of this film was shot in Bogota, and in the Quindio region, including Armenia. We also travelled to Melgar, Manizales and Pereira.
I was limited in what I could take kit wise due to travelling with a baby. So I took a very lightweight tripod, a Canon7D and my trusty 17-55mm f2.8 lens. Had a few problems with camera shake in post, but actually the small tripod held up OK!
This time round I shot a fair amount of HDR timelapse – and had days of processing with Photomatix. On balance I think it was really worth it. So many of the scenes had extreme exposure contrast and I really wanted to preserve detail in the sky and in the landscape itself. It was cut using FCP, and graded with Magic Bullet Looks. All of the tilt shift effects are done in post using Magic Bullet.
Please do go ahead and visit this country if you get the chance!

The Lyrebird Can Mimic Natural and Artificial Sounds From Its Environment
A Lyrebird is either of two species of ground-dwelling Australian birds, most notable for their superb ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment. Lyrebirds have unique plumes of neutral coloured tailfeathers. Lyrebirds are among Australia's best-known native birds. As well as their extraordinary mimicking ability, lyrebirds are notable because of the striking beauty of the male bird's huge tail when it is fanned out in display; and also because of their courtship display. A group of Lyrebirds is called a musket. There are two species of lyrebird: - Superb Lyrebird or Weringerong (Menura novaehollandiae) is found in areas of rainforest in Victoria, New South Wales and south-east Queensland, as well as in Tasmania where it was introduced in the 19th century. Females are 74--84 cm long, and the males are a larger 80--98 cm long — making them the third-largest passerine bird after the Thick-billed Raven and the Common Raven. Many Superb Lyrebirds live in the Dandenong Ranges National Park and Kinglake National Park around Melbourne, the Royal National Park and Illawarra region south of Sydney and in many other parks along the east coast of Australia as well as non protected bushland. - Albert's Lyrebird (Menura alberti) is slightly smaller at a maximum of 90 cm (male) and 84 cm (female) (around 30-35 inches) and is only found in a very small area of Southern Queensland rainforest. They have smaller, less spectacular lyrate feathers than the Superb ...
