Biotic and Abiotic Factors
020 - Biotic and Abiotic Factors Paul Andersen differentiates between biotic and abiotic factors. He explains how both abiotic and biotic factors can affect organisms at the level of the cell, the population and even the ecosystem. The complexities of biofilms, predator-prey relationships, and food webs are given as illustrative examples. Induction of Pluripotency by Defined Factors
Air date: Thursday, January 14, 2010, 3:00:00 PM Timedisplayed is Eastern Time, Washington DC Local Category: Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Description: Human ES cells have been expected as suitable resources for cell transplantation therapies. However, it has sparked ethical controversy and causes immune rejection. Hence, we decided to generate an ideal pluripotent stem cell for innovative medicine. At first, we constructed a pluripotency assay system that the candidate factors are introduced into neonate fibroblasts via retrovirus vectors. As the result, the set of Oct3/4, Sox2, c-Myc, and Klf-4 gave rise to drug resistant colonies implying potential pluripotency. The survived cells resembled ES cells in terms of morphology and proliferation showed ES cell markers and formed teratoma. It was named as induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS cell). iPS cells were created even from adult mouse fibroblasts. Moreover, iPS cells based on Nanog-expression demonstrated germline transmission. Furthermore, we successfully generated iPS cells from human adult fibroblasts, using a modified protocol. However, tumor formation was observed in chimera mouse, probably due to c-Myc retrovirus integrated into genome. We re-modified the protocol and successfully established iPS cells without using c-Myc. As further effort to lower a risk of tumorigenesis, we recently succeeded in developing a virus-free method - using a pair of plasmid vectors, instead of retrovirus vectors, to introduce the ...

Probable Cause - Probable Cause - Human Factor
"The series follows air safety investigators as they discover what really happened, what was learned and what lessons have been applied to make the skies safer for all of us. Their worldwide search for what happened and why, is both painstaking and precise. They deal with a lot of factors - weather, design flaws, and mechanical failure and human error. Episode One looks at 'The Human Factor' in regard to the worst plane crash in history, when two fully laden passenger jumbos collided on the runway at Tenerife in 1977. It also examines the mid-air collision over San Diego in 1978 between a Boeing 727 and a Cessna light aircraft. We are at once fascinated by and fearful of what happened and why. The crash itself -- frontpage news. But what about the investigation? That's what this program is all about. The accident investigators. Their search for what happened and why, is both painstaking and precise. They have to deal with a lot of factors -- weather, design flaws or mechanical failure. But we're also going to look at the most perplexing factor of all -- the human factor. March 27, 1977. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight 4805, inbound from Amsterdam, and Pan Am flight 1736 were heading to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. A bomb exploded at the airport in Las Palmas and all flights were diverted to the tiny airport on the neighboring island of Tenerife. There, the two Jumbo Jets sat in a long line of planes, waiting to take off. When they got the okay, something went ...

Finding Oregon is the compilation of six months of timelapse photography across the state of Oregon, punctuated by a 1600 mile road trip in September. We've filmed the Columbia River Gorge, Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, the Southwestern Coast, the Alvord Desert, Leslie Gulch, Blue Mountains, Crater Lake, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Deschutes River, and more. We're proud to have touched all four corners of the state; however Oregon is the kind of place that the more you see, the more places there are to still discover.
The greatest challenge with this project was being in the right place at the right time. Night timelapse sequences particularly have an unexpected number of requirements to get the bright, stunning payoff. First, the moon should be around the New Moon phase (no moon) so as not to compete with outshining the stars, so that means we get about 5 days a month window. Next, weather must be cooperative with a dependable expectancy of cloudless skies. Here in Oregon, only the Summer months have good chance of clear skies, so only 1/4 of the year offers good chance of clear skies. So that means, we have three months in the year, with a 5 day window each month to plan with fingers crossed for epic star shooting conditions. That's only 15 days in a year. Then, you hope that something doesn't come up in regular life to pull you away to other obligations on those few days. It is a maddening challenge getting all the factors to line up to be in the right place at the right time. But, when it does happen- it is such a satisfying feeling!

FOTB 2010 Titles
This year's titles for FOTB were created by Nando Costa through the use of macro motion pictures and materials with magnetic properties.
The choice of materials was driven by the desire to graphically represent the concepts of attraction and repulsion. The idea that graphic artists of all sorts attend events such as FOTB because they are inspired and therefore attracted to each other's work, while at the same time often competing in the same fields as peers, which represents the repulsion factor.

Light Emitting Dudes - LED Freerunning
Light Emitting Dudes takes a team of freerunners, geared up from head to toe with LED lights, and sets them loose on the streets of Bangkok at night. With acrobatic grace, they carved up the already buzzing nightlife spots while adding their own flair and colour to the mix.
Jason Paul, Shaun Wood, and Anan Anwar are a team of freerunners whose homes are already quite far apart, coming from Frankfurt, Sydney, and Bangkok respectively. Director Frank Sauer and Costume Designer Christina Zahra also had to fly in from Germany, so getting everyone together to shoot this video was a challenge in and of itself. With no definite locations, pre-planned stunts, or even a working LED suit prototype, making the decision to fly to Thailand was a real leap of faith. All I had was an idea in mind of what I wanted to create.
I had worked with Jason before in 2011 to create Dream World, which documented Jason's journey to London to compete in the Art of Motion Freerunning competition. Since then I have been looking for another opportunity to work together and to get the rest of his team involved. I wanted to portray freerunning in a way that hasn't been done before. I realized that freerunning at night was a barely-touched space where I could do some ground-breaking work, so I began thinking about LED suits as a concept.
One of the biggest challenges was putting together a suit that both looked cool and was functional. It had to be able to withstand the stresses of high impact acrobatic stunts, while adequately lighting up the surroundings as we passed through them. Luckily, Christina, with a wealth of experience as a fashion designer, was there to put it all together. Armed with a few morphsuits, some batteries, and a plethora of LED strips and duct tape, Christina really did a great job of fashioning together a Tron-style LED suit on a shoe-string budget.
Once the suits were ready, and we were tired of playing dress-up in the apartment and scaring the cat, it was time for the team to hit the streets. This opened up a whole new can of worms. It turns out, walking around the streets looking like creepy Neo S&M; Power Rangers attracts unwanted attention, making guerilla-style shooting particularly difficult, to say the least. And the traffic police didn't take our presence at busy intersections light-heartedly either. Go figure.
The mix of dangerous stunts and exhaustion due to all-night shoots really tested our resolve to finish the video. Maintaining the suits in good condition was also a continual hassle. They needed to be disassembled from time to time so the batteries could be recharged, and damaged LED strips needed to be unthreaded and replaced. The schedule being what it was meant that the suits never really had time to air out. We had to work with the mild stench of men’s locker room on us the whole time. The low light conditions presented their own challenges for shooting, but did provide an opportunity to experiment with long exposure to create beautiful light stroke shots.
For two weeks we were out every night collecting shots and enjoying the confused look on peoples face when we walked by. Oddly enough the cool factor of looking like a general bad ass never wore off. I think a lot big kids dream of dressing up like superheroes and leaping around the city. That's something I can cross off my bucket list, now. We had a great time together. In the end, it's definitely worth it to create something new and unique in a way only you can.

Paris Vol. 5
Entry from July 27, 2009 "We are jet-lagged and exhausted. The alarm blared at 4:30 am. Without opening my eyes I hit the snooze. "Just five more minutes" I told myself… "Lets go dude" a groggy voice commanded from the background. I didn't move. Out of nowhere, a pillow slammed down on my head, the mattress is lifted out from under me, and I hit the hardwood floor just missing my camera bag. "Ugh not again" I thought, but I knew he was right, we needed to hustle across the city and get our cameras rolling before sunrise. "
We were in Paris with only a week to shoot. Armed with top of the line cameras, fresh batteries, memory card wallets, and our favorite glass. The game-plan was to shoot as much as possible and to motivate each other when we were exhausted from staring down the viewfinder. Time-lapses were just an afterthought. Seen a couple. Heard a bit on what it takes to get one done. But when we stepped off the plane in Paris, we had never seen the sky as beautiful as it was. Some twenty two hours later, we slept...at least tried to...
We had never shot a time-lapse before, we had never put one together. We were just two guys who came to Paris to photograph. To make beautiful images. And we did. And we didn't stop. It became a battle against our batteries. " Why take one when you can take one-thousand" we'd laugh. Sometimes staying at a spot all day. Biking or walking from place to place. Mispronouncing words we didn't know. Two more packs of Camel's gone. We shot and shot and uploaded wherever we were. Even ran through the terabyte we brought with us and had to buy another one at Rue Montgalet ( nightmare ). Fell asleep on the Alexander III bridge while the clicks of our camera shutters became an urban lullaby.
Wandering around the streets of Paris armed with $20,000 in gear, we took Paris head on.
Its a scary feeling when you burn through a 32 gigabyte card before the day is done. You don't see what you're shooting. You compose the first frame and let your subject do the rest. We would wait for that perfect set of clouds or that perfect flare or trail from a plane. And all the while we didn't know what the final product would look like. We were shooting blind. But we wouldn't have had it any other way. The unknown kept us moving. Kept us thinking about what could happen when we return. Kept us thinking about what all these different pieces might say in the end.
Changing glass as much as we did, we didn't factor in the amount of sensor dust that would build up. We could never just shoot something once, from one angle, without doing brackets and panoramic builds. It became an obsession. And our shutters paid the price. Back home, it took weeks to get organized. Then it took months working between all these side projects, our main gig at BorrowLenses.com, and the Paris project. Just beginning to think about what we would do with all the clips became overwhelming. There wasn't an obvious flow. There didn't seem to be a complete overall puzzle that could even be constructed with the pieces we had. And the pieces were in pieces.
We started building each clip in After Effects. Render. Smoke. Chill. Re-Render. Smoke. Chill. We built around 150 clips out of the time-lapses we shot in Paris. They were flickery, noisy, grainy, bandy but they were ours. And we spent more time trying to fix them than we ever imagined. They were the first of the series. And from a single Clint Mansell song from "The Wrestler" sparked a vision for the Volumes. And once we put the first ones on Vimeo, we knew we had something going. We built the second one with a Tycho song. The third from Flying Lotus. The fourth from Pelican City. And after the fourth volume was built, we saw all these comments about the sensor dust. And THAT ate away at us.
So we started from scratch; as if we had just hoped off the plane from Paris. Reorganize, re-edit, recolor, re-render. Days and days of work. Going through entire albums trying to find that one song that would go perfectly with all the clips strung together. But we didn't know how they would all hold together. There was no obvious order again. And we didn't think we could fill the twenty volume quota that we had promised to our fans. So we settled on doing a Director's Cut. A montage of all of the clips: Paris Volume 5.
Enter Pigeon Point. We had been shooting a new series called the California Coastline. And we went to Pigeon Point down in Santa Cruz with our friend Matt. At first it didn't seem like a prime spot for time-lapses. But Matt didn't tell us the most amazing thing about Pigeon Point. They installed a new temporary 6-beam setup while the main lighthouse wasn't operational. We shot through the night, edited the next day, and posted on Monday. While we were editing, Mogwai popped into the playlist. To be honest we never sat down and listened to Mogwai with our work but it turned out that Friend of the Night fit that piece like a glove. And so we chose 2 Rights Make

PUSHIN' THE BAY TV presents 'BAY FACTORS', a music video showcase for local, independent Bay Area / West Coast artist(s) making a difference in the Bay Area rap game. PUSHIN' THE BAY TV is the only media outlet supporting Bay Area talent! The term "purp" is marijuana that displays purple hairs and deep greens. Cannabis, also known as marijuana or marihuana, or ganja (from Hindi/Sanskrit: gānjā, hemp), is a psychoactive drug extracted from the plant Cannabis sativa, or more often, Cannabis sativa subsp. indica.
