Baby black and white colobus monkeys at Saint Louis Zoo
A black-and-white colobus monkey was born at the Saint Louis Zoo's Primate House on Halloween, Oct. 31, 2012. Her name is Kivuli (pronounced Kih-VOO-lee), which is Swahili for ghost or shadow. Cecelia, age 13, is raising her first baby under the watchful eye of the group's matriarch, Roberta, age 25, who has two offspring of her own — 1-1/2-year-old male, Mosi, and 5-month-old female, Pili. Colobus infants are born with all white hair and a pink face. In contrast, adults are primarily black, with white hair encircling their face and half of their tail. They have a distinctive mantle of long white hair extending from their shoulders around the edge of their back. Infants will change color gradually until they reach adult coloration at about 6 months. "Primates rely heavily on learning through experience," says Joe Knobbe, Saint Louis Zoo manager of primates. "Cecelia is being a great mother to her infant thanks to the wonderful example of parenting she's learned from Roberta." The family of six, including father Kima, age 6, is now on view at the Primate House. Visitors can see the infant poking its head out to look at its new world. Colobus monkeys are found throughout the forests of east and central Africa. The birth is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Colobus Species Survival Plan (SSP), a program to manage a genetically healthy population of black and white colobus monkeys in North American zoos. www.stlzoo.org

St. Louis Woman Shot Inside Police Car After Getting Hitched By Cop, PD Claim Suicide
ST. LOUIS COUNTY • An Alton police officer whose pistol was wrestled away by a woman who used it to kill herself inside his patrol car did not violate department procedures, his chief, David Hayes, said this afternoon. St. Louis County police, in whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, said earlier today their investigation showed that Stephanie Hicks, 20, of the 700 block of Linden Street in Alton, inflicted her own wound about 9 am Wednesday. St. Louis County police Officer Rick Eckhard said after this morning's autopsy that the preliminary finding was suicide. "This is believed to have occurred after a struggle over the control of the Alton police officer's weapon while in the patrol vehicle wherein she was shot in the head and died as a result of her injury," Eckhard wrote in a statement. Chief Hayes said it started with a call to police from an associate of Hicks who was trailing her in sweltering heat as she was attempting to walk nine miles to Christian Hospital Northeast, at 11133 Dunn Road in north St. Louis County. The chief explained, "There was a domestic issue going on between the two of them." An officer found Hicks walking across the Clark Bridge, which crosses the Mississippi River at Alton, and called for an EMS crew to check her out. Hayes said Hicks was not suicidal on the bridge, but simply trying to walk to the hospital. She was medically cleared by the paramedics. The watch commander gave the officer permission to drive her, and the officer let her ...

Alex Jones On Tanks In The Streets in St. Louis
St Louis City residents have been warned to not be alarmed at the sight of US Army tanks rolling down residential neighborhoods after sightings of the vehicles provoked fears of martial law. The exercise is part of a US Army program run by military police from Fort Meade, Maryland focused around training MPs from St. Louis how to drive heavily armored tanks "on highways and on city streets." Sightings of the tanks prompted hundreds of residents to flood news channel KSDK's Facebook page, with some expressing fears that martial law had arrived with others promising to "stop and salute" the tanks as they rolled by. Reporting that he was told by the Army not to disclose the location of where the exercise was operating out of for "security reasons," KSDK reporter Casey Nolan downplayed the exercise as "not such a big deal." US Army Sergeant Cornelius Ivory discouraged citizens from taking video and photographs of the tanks and urged them not to get too close. "They need to know to stay away from it," Ivory told KSDK. The exercise will run from June 21-28 in St. Louis, with the presence of the tanks being most noticeable in the area of the sixth district. As we have exhaustively documented, the increasing shift towards domestic militarization of law enforcement is part of the acclimation process to get Americans comfortable with the idea of troops and tanks on the streets as a routine occurrence. Earlier today we reported on how scores of paramilitary troops and soldiers ...
