Those who suffer Love - Tracey Emin
29 May—4 Jul 2009 Mason's Yard The title for my show is self-explanatory: love rarely comes easily and if it does, it usually goes quite quickly. And there is death, and loss, which at some point in our lives we all have to deal with. I'm constantly fighting with the notion of love and passion. Love, sex, lust -- in my heart and mind there is always some battle, some kind of conflict. This show is essentially a drawings show. Everything is simple and linear, straight to the point. The show is to coincide with the release of my book 'One Thousand Drawings' published by Rizzoli. New works in the show include an animation, made up of many drawings of a woman masturbating. I say, a woman, because I didn't necessarily mean it to be myself, but it is a symbol of lust and loneliness, as well as self-preservation. Other works in the show date from as early as 1991. There is a simplicity and modesty about this show that has made me feel very happy and complete, like I have gone a full circle and I'm back to what I really know. Tracey Emin 2009 There can be few artists who reveal the intimate details of their life so powerfully and with such candour as Tracey Emin. She works across a wide variety of media: drawing, filmmaking, installation, painting, neon, photography, sewn work and sculpture. Her work is both intensely personal and resonantly universal and, as fellow artist Julian Schnabel said recently: "Tracey's need to be honest supercedes all decisions in her life and art. The ...

William Orpen
Major Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen, KBE, RA, RHA (27 November 1878 -- 29 September 1931) was an Irish portrait painter, who worked mainly in London. Born in Stillorgan, County Dublin, Orpen was a fine draughtsman and a popular painter of the well-to-do in the period leading up to World War I. He was involved in the "Celtic revival" in Ireland and took part in the attempt there to find a visual counterpart to the birth of new national literary language (McConkey 2005). Although his studio was in London, he spent time in Ireland painting, he was a friend of Hugh Lane and influenced the Irish realist painters, like Sean Keating, who were beginning their careers at that time. Orpen's wife was Grace Knewstub, whom he married in 1901 and with whom he had three daughters. The marriage was not happy, and the painter eventually ran off with one of his sitters, Madame Saint-George, a wealthy young married woman whom he painted around 1912. Like Sir John Lavery, Orpen was an official war painter of the First World War. In 1917 he travelled to the Western Front and produced drawings and paintings of privates, dead soldiers and German prisoners of war along with official portraits of generals and politicians. His large paintings of the Versaille Peace Conference captured the political wranglings and the vainglory of the gathered politicians and statesmen, whom Orpen came to loathe but relied upon for post-war commissions. Most of these works, 138 in all, he gave to the British ...

37 28950 - Bertram Mackennal 'Miss Grace Dunham' 1896
Bertram Mackennal 'Miss Grace Dunham' 1896 Purchased 1976 In the 19th century, wealthy families and public figures commissioned portraits as an affirmation of their social status. These commissions provided an important source of income for both painters and sculptors. They were also a means by which more conventional artists could enhance their reputation among patrons, by exhibiting these works at a prestigious, though conservative, public venue such as the Royal Academy in London. Bertram Mackennal's reputation soared following the scandal that Circe created when it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1894. He exhibited there regularly for the rest of his career and, as a crowning honour, was admitted as a Royal Academician in 1922, the only Australian sculptor to receive such an accolade. Mackennal's exquisite marble bust of the young American Miss Grace Dunham is indicative of the sophisticated clientele that the sculptor secured from the 1890s. Grace Dunham was born in New York and, like many of the cosmopolitan social set, made the transatlantic sea voyage to make her debut in London society in the 1890s. Mackennal skilfully captured the elegance and refined beauty of his subject. Her head is turned slightly, as if averting direct eye contact with the viewer, a detached poise befitting her social and unmarried status. She is 'clothed' in a stylised bodice decorated with a distinctly fashionable art nouveau motif. The sides and rear of the sculpture, however, remain ...

'76' Family Home of Leonard, Barbara, Maurice and Roz Bennetts, Muswell Hill
One of a series of videos compiled by Roz Bennetts highlighting the paintings created by Leonard Bennetts via a series of online galleries. This showreel is a series of images of the Bennetts' family home at 76 Colney Hatch Lane, Muswell Hill, London N10 where Leonard hosted many of his smaller exhibitions. These photos were taken in 2006 just before the house was sold and most of the original furniture is in situ (the house didn't change much over the years). Leonard was a member of The Wapping Group, a Royal Academician and winner of the coveted Hesketh Hubbard Art Society's First Prize. He was born in New Zealand and educated at Canterbury University in fine arts and took a post graduate course at Sydney Technical College, Australia. He later moved to London and studied at the Sir John Cass College, Hendon and Barnet colleges. He initiated a major Bond Street exhibition of New Zealand artists based in Europe and organised another for his pupils opened by the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. Leonard's works have been regularly displayed at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, Cassel Gallery, Hayward Gallery and Walkers Gallery, Bond Street and the Mall Gallery as part of the Wapping Group plus exhibitions at New Zealand House, Haymarket, London. Collectors include the Dean of St. Pauls, the New Zealand High Commissioner, Jonathan Pryce, Lord Eccles, Viscount Eccles, Robert Dougal, Michael Bentine, David Swift and others. the thing with feathers (that perches in the soul) by loz atkinson for BT ArtBox raising vital funds for childline in it's 25th year. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of ChildLine, BT has announced the launch of the BT ArtBox project. Leading artists, designers and creatives from around the world have been invited to apply their individual talents to re-style that much-loved icon of British design, the traditional red telephone box. Each artist or designer will take delivery of a full-size, fibre-glass replica of the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott-designed original K6 telephone kiosk, which was introduced in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V. Participating artists include 2002 Turner prize winner Keith Tyson, Romero Britto and Royal Academician Professor of Sculpture David Mach, along with fashion designers Giles Deacon and Zandra Rhodes. The BT ArtBoxes will be on display in high-profile locations around the capital between June 18 and July 16 before being auctioned off at a VIP Gala Auction at the National Portrait Gallery on July 18 to raise funds for BT's long-time partner ChildLine. Esther Rantzen OBE, founder of ChildLine and patron of the BT ArtBox project, said: "I'm thrilled that ChildLine's 25th birthday is to be celebrated by such a unique and inspiring project as BT Artbox.
