"Loudness war" or "loudness race" is the popular name given to the trend of increasing audio levels in recorded music since the early 1990s, which many critics believe reduces sound quality and listener enjoyment. Increasing loudness was first reported as early as the 1940s with respect to mastering practices for 7" singles. The maximum peak level of analog recordings such as these is limited by varying specifications of electronic equipment along the chain from source to listener, including vinyl record and cassette players.
With the advent of the Compact Disc (CD), music is encoded to a digital format with a clearly defined maximum peak amplitude. Once the maximum amplitude of a CD is reached, loudness can be increased still further through signal processing techniques such as dynamic range compression and equalization. Engineers can apply an increasingly high ratio of compression to a recording until it more frequently peaks at the maximum amplitude. In extreme cases, efforts to increase loudness can result in clipping and other audible distortion. Modern recordings that use extreme dynamic range compression and other measures to increase loudness therefore can sacrifice sound quality to loudness. The competitive escalation of loudness has led music fans and members of the musical press to refer to the affected albums as "victims of the loudness war."
Loudness is the characteristic of a sound that is primarily a psychological correlate of physical strength (amplitude). More formally, it is defined as "that attribute of auditory sensation in terms of which sounds can be ordered on a scale extending from quiet to loud".
Loudness, a subjective measure, is often confused with objective measures of sound strength such as sound pressure, sound pressure level (in decibels), sound intensity or sound power. Filters such as A-weighting attempt to adjust sound measurements to correspond to loudness as perceived by the typical human. However, loudness perception is a much more complex process than A-weighting.
Loudness is also affected by parameters other than sound pressure, including frequency, bandwidth and duration.
The perception of loudness is related to both the sound pressure level (SPL) and duration of a sound. The human auditory system averages the effects of SPL over a 600–1000 ms interval. A sound of constant SPL will be perceived to increase in loudness as samples of duration 20, 50, 100, 200 ms are heard, up to a duration of about 1 second at which point the perception of loudness will stabilize. For sounds of duration greater than 1 second, the moment-by-moment perception of loudness will be related to the average loudness during the preceding 600–1000 ms.

Sound quality suffers. NOTE: Use headphones if listening on a mobile device. Phones and tablets usually apply their own dynamic range compression on their built-in speakers, which hides the effect of this example. IMPORTANT - Please watch the 720p HD version to hear the differences. Even at this setting YouTube manages to reduce the audio quality by quite a bit! Hopefully you will get the general gist of the video though. Here is a video that compares/contrasts various CD versions of the ABBA song "Lay All Your Love On Me" recorded and released in 1980. The CD versions used here are - 1985(?) USA Atlantic CD Pressing 1994 "Thank You For The Music" Box Set Remaster 2001 Astley Remaster 2005 "Complete Studio Recordings" Box Set I have made the volume of all of the versions the same, but apart from that I have not edited the audio of each version. With the same volume for each sample, you can hear the details that are lost though over limiting and compression, especially in the 2005 remastered version....
