Hovis 'Bike' advert 1973 (Britain's favourite TV ad)
FROM: www.quickrelease.tv HI-RES VODCAST tinyurl.com In 1973, Hovis produced what became one of the all-time classic TV adverts, a delivery boy freewheeling down a cobbled northern hill. In fact, the ad was shot on Gold Hill of Shaftesbury, Dorset. The director was (Sir) Ridley Scott. He later went on to direct Bladerunner, Alien, Thelma & Louise, and Gladiator. The original boy on the bike, Carl Barlow, then 13, is now a 48-year-old fireman. He said: "It was pure fate that I got the part as the Hovis boy. I was down to the last three, and it turned out that one of the two boys couldn't ride a bike, and the other wouldn't cut his hair into the pudding bowl style - it was the Seventies after all. As the only boy who could ride a bike and would cut his hair, I got the part." The ad is also famous for its soundtrack. In Britain at least, Dvorak's 'New World' symphony - rearranged for brass - says 'Hovis' and 'good, plain Northern values.' Like many classic adverts of the 1970s, the Hovis 'Bike' advert was produced by iconic advertising agency Collett Dickenson Pearce & Partners.

Hovis Advert CAPSTICK COMES HOME
CAPSTICK COMES HOME - Tony Capstick and Carlton Main/Frickley Colliery Band. (1981) 'The New World Symphony' by Dvorak, CAPSTICK COMES HOME I'll never forget that first day at t'pit. Me an' mi father worked a seventy two hour shift, an' then we walked home forty three mile through t'snow in us bare feet, huddled inside us clothes med out o' old sacks. Eventually we trudged over t'hill until wi could see t'street light twinklin' in our village. Mi father smiled down at mi through t'icicles hangin' off his nose. "Nearly home now lad", he said. We stumbled into t'house and stood there freezin' cold and tired out, shiverin' and miserable, in front o' t' meagre fire. Any road, mi mam says "Cheer up, lads. I've got you some nice brown bread and butter for yer tea." Ee, mi father went crackers. He reached out and gently pulled mi mam towards 'im by t'throat. "You big fat, idle ugly wart", he said. "You gret useless spawny-eyed parrot-faced wazzock." ('E had a way wi words, mi father. He'd bin to college, y'know). "You've been out playin' bingo all afternoon instead o' gettin' some proper snap ready for me an' this lad", he explained to mi poor, little, purple-faced mam. Then turnin' to me he said "Arthur", (He could never remember mi name), "here's half a crown. Nip down to t'chip 'oyl an' get us a nice piece o' 'addock for us tea. Man cannot live by bread alone." He were a reyt tater, mi father. He said as 'ow workin' folk should have some dignity an' pride an' self respect, an ...

Inside Rank Hovis flour mills, Hull 20/01/2012
Inside the former Rank hovis flour mills in Hull. Recorded by Jakob Lawrence on 20/01/2012 (I had a sore throat so I sounded like a frog). I ended up racing down from the roof as I heard news that my head teacher had rang the police. Most of the talking is random crap but, it kept me 'comfortable' as I fooled myself into thinking I was walking around with someone else. The fact is, I know I wasn't alone... DON'T COPY WHAT I DID, YOU COULD END UP DEAD. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS.

Hovis - As Good Today As Its Always Been, 60' TV Ad, 2008
Staple British bread brand Hovis use this TV ad to showcast over 100 years of the nations history, and their baking heritage. The original ad is a mammoth 122 seconds long celebrating the 122 years since Hovis was established (this is the subsequent cut-down 60' spot). The ad features a boy clutching a loaf of bread running through all the major events of the last century, before returning home safe in the present day. This TV ad formed part of a larger brand re-launch that Hovis undertook in 2008 in an attempt to halt their decline in share against rival Warburtons. The campaign was wildly successful, closing the gap of share from 20% to just 6%, and increasing sales by 14% year on year. The campaign went on to win the Grand Prix, Gold, Effectiveness Company of the Year at the IPA Effectiveness Awards in 2010. Full 122 seconds here: www.youtube.com
