Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, David Cameron are amongst those who have recently voiced their concern over literacy rates in the UK. Ofsted have just announced an illiteracy warning as the UK slumped to 25th in International literacy rankings. Gavin Barwell MP is now chairing a commission into library closures, ironically his assistant is head of Croydons DCMS and has hollowed out library services and is considering closures as Croydon Council outsource library services. Recent visitors to lend their support to our campaign include shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg, Independent Mayoral candidate Siobhan Benita and Lib Dem' s Brian Paddick, all feel that Upper Norwood should be a blueprint that is replicated as a model for other libraries in the UK.
