Sarsen stones are sandstone blocks found in quantity in the United Kingdom on Salisbury Plain, the Marlborough Downs, in Kent, and in smaller quantities in Berkshire, Essex, Oxfordshire, Dorset and Hampshire. They are the post-glacial remains of a cap of Cenozoic silcrete that once covered much of southern England – a dense, hard rock created from sand bound by a silica cement, making it a kind of silicified sandstone. This is thought to have formed during Neogene to Quaternary weathering by the silicification of Upper Paleocene Lambeth Group sediments, resulting from acid leaching. The word "sarsen" (pronunciation ['sa:sǝn]) is a shortening of "Saracen stone" which arose in the Wiltshire dialect. "Saracen" was a common name for Muslims, and came by extension to be used for anything regarded as non-Christian, whether Muslim, pagan Celtic, or other.
The builders of Stonehenge used these stones for the heelstone and sarsen circle uprights.Avebury and many other megalithic monuments in southern England are also built with sarsen stones.

Images from a three day walk in search of the Harrow Way. http://thememoryband.com/ http://thememoryband.bandcamp.com/ As the writing and recording of On The Chalk (Our Navigation Of The Line Of The Downs) drew to a close it became clearer to me what exactly it was about The Harrow Way that had so fascinated me and which parts of it interested me most. I realised it was "lost" section of the mythical road between Farnham, near where I grew up, and Stonehenge which intrigued me. Although Hilaire Belloc theorized about the route of the old abandoned road though Hampshire and Wiltshire, he never searched for it there. This was where the theory became vague, here was where the narrative fell apart. The landscape of the route is a strangely quiet zone. Belonging neither to Eastern edgelands...

Sarsen Stone In Lampton Park, Hounslow, Greater London
A work for organ + fixed electronics. This is the first performance, given by the composer, at St Laurence, Catford, on 20 October 2013, as part of the Automatronic festival. A Sarsen stone is a dense, hard block used in the construction of Megalithic monuments in Southern England such as Stonehenge; they were often used whole as they were found in the ground and transported great distances. This work is part invocation, part paean to the effort and vision of the megalithic builders of these ancient monuments. In modern times Sarsen stone is a favoured material for steps and kerbstones. photograph by the composer. www.huwmorgantheorgan.co.uk
