State Opening of Parliament, 1966-1969 (4)
All eyes are on Her Majesty as she is revealed in splendour when those doors swing open (0:01), but everyone also loves the wobblng Kings of Arms (0:08), "my pack of cards" as HM calls them, rightly so as one or more of them usually keels over at these events. Those tabards are SO heavy with centuries of laundry starch (not to mention Old Armpit). Dads used to herd the adorable Pages of Honour (0:30) into his billiard room before the big day. He said it was never a problem showing them how to manage a State Opening and they were always such a tease. Mummy used to joke that judging by all the the huffing and puffing coming from the billiard room they must be pulling a train rather than carrying one! There's Mummy directly behind the Queen (0:55). She always said she had tears in her eyes whenever the Queen processed in state, but on this occasion her tears were caused by her knickers which she had to hold up as she made her stately way. She's just not used to wearing them, which is why she's clutching them through her dress. You'd have thought the Garter King could have helped her out with some elastic but he refused to lend a hand (most unusual - for him). Mummy had to duck behind the Throne to avoid the Duke (1:43 - 1:48), and she hid there, for the whole speech, all Gothic Perpenidicular; she might have turned to stone!. She was always embarrassed by running into the Duke in public. "People talk," she fretted, most unnecessarily as the Duke never gave her a second ...

5/29: Parables Of Nature - Training And Restraining
PARABLES FROM NATURE is a collection of short stories which were originally published as 4 separate volumes. They are inspired from Nature and written for children. Nevertheless, Gatty uses children's literature because she knows that in doing so, she can reach a wider group of readers and point out problems from the Victorian Age. Margaret Gatty (née Scott) (1809--4 October 1873) was an English writer of children's literature. Born in Burnham on Crouch, Essex, the daughter of the Rev. Alexander John Scott, DD, a Royal Navy chaplain, who served under, and was the trusted friend of, Lord Nelson on board the HMS Victory before and during the Battle of Trafalgar. She married the Rev. Alfred Gatty, DD, Ecclesfield, Yorkshire in 1839 and moved into the vicarage of Church of St. Mary shortly after. She became a highly useful and popular writer of tales for young people. Among her books may be mentioned Parables from Nature, Worlds not Realised, Proverbs Illustrated, and Aunt Judy's Tales. She also conducted Aunt Judy's Magazine, a family publication written by various members of Margaret's large family. She became fascinated with marine biology, possibly on the advice of William Henry Harvey, who she had met in Hastings in 1848. Following this, she wrote a book on British seaweeds which dejargonised much of which had been written previously on the subject. She corresponded with many of the greatest marine biologists of her day including George Busk and Robert Brown. Margaret ...

Aberdeen shortie
King Edward VII statue.
(At the corner of Union Street and Union Terrace Aberdeen’s most elaborate granite sculpture was designed by Alfred Drury RA and carved by James Philip.
On a plinth of polished red Peterhead granite the sovereign holds a sceptre with the cross and an orb. Edward wears the robes of the Order of the Garter, the most senior and oldest order of British chivalry. Below the statue is a bronze ornamental frieze. To the left is the figure of peace, Britannia, breaking a sword. In the centre stands Scotland’s patron saint, Andrew and his shield. Positioned on the right are three figures called “Imperial Unity”. Britannia is seated centrally with her left arm encircling a figure emblematic of the Indian and African peoples. A third figure representing Canada and Australia extends a hand of friendship to be kissed by The Mother of Nations”. The motto Honi soit qui mal y pense” translates as “shame on him who thinks this evil”.) Information taken from http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/web/files/LocalHistory/sculpture_trail_leaflet.pdf
The sight when leaving the modern Union Square shopping centre car park is akin to a construction site for a ship's scrapyard. I found this a poor introduction to this otherwise fine city.
"One of the busiest ports in Britain handling almost 9000 vessels annually - including North Sea oil and ferry traffic" Information from www.aberdeen-harbour.co.uk/
