Otranto is a coastal town in southern Italy’s Puglia region. It’s home to the 15th-century Aragonese Castle and 11th-century Otranto Cathedral, with a rose window and ornate mosaic flooring. Otranto has a beautiful harbour, and crystal clear swimming waters. It's a delightful place to get lost in the alleway streets with lots to see and do but with a very relaxed pace of life. On the eastern edge of Italy's Salento Peninsula (the heel of the boot), the town of Otranto has been a beautiful seaside jewel for nearly two millennia. It's remote location keeps too many foreign visitors from reaching it on the shores of the Ionian sea, but Italians come down from the north every summer to enjoy the warm, clear waters and blue skies.
My only regret about my visit is that I wish I'd had more time there!

Otranto o anticamente "Idrunto" è un comune italiano di 5.724 abitanti della provincia di Lecce in Puglia.
Situato sulla costa adriatica della penisola salentina, è il comune più orientale d'Italia: il capo omonimo, chiamato anche Punta Palascìa, a sud del centro abitato, è il punto geografico più a est della penisola italiana.
Dapprima centro greco-messapico e romano, poi bizantino e più tardi aragonese, si sviluppa attorno all'imponente castello e alla cattedrale normanna. Sede arcivescovile e rilevante centro turistico, ha dato il suo nome al Canale d'Otranto, che separa l'Italia dall'Albania, e alla Terra d'Otranto, antica circoscrizione del Regno di Napoli. Nel 2010 il borgo antico è stato riconosciuto come Patrimonio Culturale dell'UNESCO quale Sito Messaggero di Pace. Fa parte del club I borghi più belli d'Italia.
Castello Aragonese
Il castello di Otranto, che diede il nome al primo romanzo gotico della storia, è in stretta relazione con la cinta muraria con cui forma un unico apparato difensivo. Fatto costruire da Alfonso d'Aragona tra il 1485 e il 1498, il castello fu ideato da Ciro Ciri con la consulenza di Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Al tempo in Piazza Castello, luogo dove si trova l'edificio, si ergevano delle fortificazioni risalenti al periodo della dominazione sveva con l'aggiunta dei ritocchi operati dai turchi intorno al 1480. Sotto la giurisdizione aragonese, il castello venne circondato da un alto fossato e Ciri vi fece aggiungere tre torrioni cilindrici angolari. Sebbene la pianta del castello sia pentagonale, essa risulta piuttosto irregolare soprattutto a causa dei successivi rifacimenti risalenti al XVI secolo. Nel 1578 infatti, sul lato dell'edificio che si affaccia sul mare, venne aggiunto un bastione a lancia con dei baluardi esterni per avvistare l'arrivo di navi e flotte nemiche. Sul bastione sono incisi gli scudi gentilizi di Antonio de Mendoza e di Don Pedro di Toledo, allora signori della città, mentre sul portone d'ingresso è scolpito lo stemma di Carlo V.

Një 50-vjeçar shqiptar është shpëtuar nga autoritetet italiane. Mësohet se shqiptari ishte nisur për peshkim nga Vlora drekën e së enjtes por mjeti me të cilin lundronte pësoi defekt në motor.
Ky është momenti ku një 50 vjeçar shqiptar është shpëtuar nga Roja Bregdetare italiane në Kanalin e Otrantos.
Shqiptari identiteti i të cilit nuk dihet ende ishte nisur për peshkim nga brigjet e Vlorës, por mjeti me të cilin lundronte pësoi defekt në motor duke e lënë për disa orë në mes të detit të trazuar.
Alarmi për ndihmë është lëshuar nga vetë peshkatari rreth orës 14:30 të së enjtes. Ai ka njoftuar autoritetet italiane se ndodhej rreth 25 milje nga Otranto.
Pas disa orësh, Roja Bregdetare Italiane ka bërë të mundur lokalizimin dhe shpëtimin e shqiptarit.
Sipas medieve italiane, 50-vjeçari ndodhej në gjende të rënduar psikologjike ndërsa i është nënshtruar menjëherë kontrolleve mjekësore.
Pas marrjes së ndihmës nga ekipi mjekësor italian gjendja e tij shëndetësore është paraqitur e mirë.

Battle of the Strait of Otranto (1917)
The 1917 Battle of the Strait of Otranto was the result of an Austro-Hungarian raid on the Otranto Barrage, an Allied naval blockade of the Strait of Otranto. The battle took place on 14–15 May 1917, and was the largest surface action in the Adriatic Sea during World War I. The Otranto Barrage was a fixed barrier, composed of lightly armed drifters with anti-submarine nets coupled with minefields and supported by Allied naval patrols.
The Austro-Hungarian navy planned to raid the Otranto Barrage with a force of three light cruisers and two destroyers under the command of Captain Miklós Horthy, in an attempt to break the barrier to allow U-boats freer access to the Mediterranean, and Allied shipping. An Allied force composed of ships from three navies responded to the raid and in the ensuing battle, heavily damaged the Austro-Hungarian cruiser SMS Novara. However, the rapid approach of the Austro-Hungarian relief force persuaded Rear Admiral Acton, the Allied commander, to retreat.

Otranto
Otranto (Italian pronunciation: [ˈɔːtranto]; Latin: Hydruntum) is a town and comune in the province of Lecce (Apulia, Italy), in a fertile region once famous for its breed of horses.
It is located on the east coast of the Salento peninsula. The Strait of Otranto, to which the city gives its name, connects the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea and separates Italy from Albania. The harbour is small and has little trade.
The lighthouse Faro della Palascìa, at approximately 5 kilometres (3 miles) southeast of Otranto, marks the most easterly point of the Italian mainland.
About 50 kilometres (31 mi) south lies the promontory of Santa Maria di Leuca (so called since ancient times from its white cliffs, leukos being Greek for white), the southeastern extremity of Italy, the ancient Promontorium lapygium or Sallentinum. The district between this promontory and Otranto is thickly populated and very fertile.
History
Otranto occupies the site of the ancient Hydrus (in Greek: Ὑδροῦς) or Hydruntum (in Latin), also known as Hydrunton, Hydronton, or Hydruntu. Otranto was a town of Greek origin, which, in the wars of Pyrrhus and of Hannibal sided against Rome.

On the eastern edge of Italy's Salento Peninsula (the heel of the boot), the town of Otranto has been a beautiful seaside jewel for nearly two millennia. It's remote location keeps too many foreign visitors from reaching it on the shores of the Ionian sea, but Italians come down from the north every summer to enjoy the warm, clear waters and blue skies.
My only regret about my visit is that I wish I'd had more time there!

Otranto o anticamente "Idrunto" è un comune italiano di 5.724 abitanti della provincia di Lecce in Puglia.
Situato sulla costa adriatica della penisola salentina, è il comune più orientale d'Italia: il capo omonimo, chiamato anche Punta Palascìa, a sud del centro abitato, è il punto geografico più a est della penisola italiana.
Dapprima centro greco-messapico e romano, poi bizantino e più tardi aragonese, si sviluppa attorno all'imponente castello e alla cattedrale normanna. Sede arcivescovile e rilevante centro turistico, ha dato il suo nome al Canale d'Otranto, che separa l'Italia dall'Albania, e alla Terra d'Otranto, antica circoscrizione del Regno di Napoli. Nel 2010 il borgo antico è stato riconosciuto come Patrimonio Culturale dell'UNESCO quale Sito Messaggero di Pace. Fa parte del club I borghi più belli d'Italia.
Castello Aragonese
Il castello di Otranto, che diede il nome al primo romanzo gotico della storia, è in stretta relazione con la cinta muraria con cui forma un unico apparato difensivo. Fatto costruire da Alfonso d'Aragona tra il 1485 e il 1498, il castello fu ideato da Ciro Ciri con la consulenza di Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Al tempo in Piazza Castello, luogo dove si trova l'edificio, si ergevano delle fortificazioni risalenti al periodo della dominazione sveva con l'aggiunta dei ritocchi operati dai turchi intorno al 1480. Sotto la giurisdizione aragonese, il castello venne circondato da un alto fossato e Ciri vi fece aggiungere tre torrioni cilindrici angolari. Sebbene la pianta del castello sia pentagonale, essa risulta piuttosto irregolare soprattutto a causa dei successivi rifacimenti risalenti al XVI secolo. Nel 1578 infatti, sul lato dell'edificio che si affaccia sul mare, venne aggiunto un bastione a lancia con dei baluardi esterni per avvistare l'arrivo di navi e flotte nemiche. Sul bastione sono incisi gli scudi gentilizi di Antonio de Mendoza e di Don Pedro di Toledo, allora signori della città, mentre sul portone d'ingresso è scolpito lo stemma di Carlo V.

Ky është momenti ku një 50 vjeçar shqiptar është shpëtuar nga Roja Bregdetare italiane në Kanalin e Otrantos.
Shqiptari identiteti i të cilit nuk dihet ende ishte nisur për peshkim nga brigjet e Vlorës, por mjeti me të cilin lundronte pësoi defekt në motor duke e lënë për disa orë në mes të detit të trazuar.
Alarmi për ndihmë është lëshuar nga vetë peshkatari rreth orës 14:30 të së enjtes. Ai ka njoftuar autoritetet italiane se ndodhej rreth 25 milje nga Otranto.
Pas disa orësh, Roja Bregdetare Italiane ka bërë të mundur lokalizimin dhe shpëtimin e shqiptarit.
Sipas medieve italiane, 50-vjeçari ndodhej në gjende të rënduar psikologjike ndërsa i është nënshtruar menjëherë kontrolleve mjekësore.
Pas marrjes së ndihmës nga ekipi mjekësor italian gjendja e tij shëndetësore është paraqitur e mirë.

Otranto is a coastal town in southern Italy’s Puglia region. It’s home to the 15th-century Aragonese Castle and 11th-century Otranto Cathedral, with a rose window and ornate mosaic flooring. Otranto has a beautiful harbour, and crystal clear swimming waters. It's a delightful place to get lost in the alleway streets with lots to see and do but with a very relaxed pace of life. Many Italian's pick Otranto and the Puglia region for their summer holidays.

On the eastern edge of Italy's Salento Peninsula (the heel of the boot), the town of Otranto has been a beautiful seaside jewel for nearly two millennia. It's remote location keeps too many foreign visitors from reaching it on the shores of the Ionian sea, but Italians come down from the north every summer to enjoy the warm, clear waters and blue skies.
My only regret about my visit is that I wish I'd had more time there!

Otranto o anticamente "Idrunto" è un comune italiano di 5.724 abitanti della provincia di Lecce in Puglia.
Situato sulla costa adriatica della penisola salentina, è il comune più orientale d'Italia: il capo omonimo, chiamato anche Punta Palascìa, a sud del centro abitato, è il punto geografico più a est della penisola italiana.
Dapprima centro greco-messapico e romano, poi bizantino e più tardi aragonese, si sviluppa attorno all'imponente castello e alla cattedrale normanna. Sede arcivescovile e rilevante centro turistico, ha dato il suo nome al Canale d'Otranto, che separa l'Italia dall'Albania, e alla Terra d'Otranto, antica circoscrizione del Regno di Napoli. Nel 2010 il borgo antico è stato riconosciuto come Patrimonio Culturale dell'UNESCO quale Sito Messaggero di Pace. Fa parte del club I borghi più belli d'Italia.
Castello Aragonese
Il castello di Otranto, che diede il nome al primo romanzo gotico della storia, è in stretta relazione con la cinta muraria con cui forma un unico apparato difensivo. Fatto costruire da Alfonso d'Aragona tra il 1485 e il 1498, il castello fu ideato da Ciro Ciri con la consulenza di Francesco di Giorgio Martini. Al tempo in Piazza Castello, luogo dove si trova l'edificio, si ergevano delle fortificazioni risalenti al periodo della dominazione sveva con l'aggiunta dei ritocchi operati dai turchi intorno al 1480. Sotto la giurisdizione aragonese, il castello venne circondato da un alto fossato e Ciri vi fece aggiungere tre torrioni cilindrici angolari. Sebbene la pianta del castello sia pentagonale, essa risulta piuttosto irregolare soprattutto a causa dei successivi rifacimenti risalenti al XVI secolo. Nel 1578 infatti, sul lato dell'edificio che si affaccia sul mare, venne aggiunto un bastione a lancia con dei baluardi esterni per avvistare l'arrivo di navi e flotte nemiche. Sul bastione sono incisi gli scudi gentilizi di Antonio de Mendoza e di Don Pedro di Toledo, allora signori della città, mentre sul portone d'ingresso è scolpito lo stemma di Carlo V.

Një 50-vjeçar shqiptar është shpëtuar nga autoritetet italiane. Mësohet se shqiptari ishte nisur për peshkim nga Vlora drekën e së enjtes por mjeti me të cilin lundronte pësoi defekt në motor.
Ky është momenti ku një 50 vjeçar shqiptar është shpëtuar nga Roja Bregdetare italiane në Kanalin e Otrantos.
Shqiptari identiteti i të cilit nuk dihet ende ishte nisur për peshkim nga brigjet e Vlorës, por mjeti me të cilin lundronte pësoi defekt në motor duke e lënë për disa orë në mes të detit të trazuar.
Alarmi për ndihmë është lëshuar nga vetë peshkatari rreth orës 14:30 të së enjtes. Ai ka njoftuar autoritetet italiane se ndodhej rreth 25 milje nga Otranto.
Pas disa orësh, Roja Bregdetare Italiane ka bërë të mundur lokalizimin dhe shpëtimin e shqiptarit.
Sipas medieve italiane, 50-vjeçari ndodhej në gjende të rënduar psikologjike ndërsa i është nënshtruar menjëherë kontrolleve mjekësore.
Pas marrjes së ndihmës nga ekipi mjekësor italian gjendja e tij shëndetësore është paraqitur e mirë.

Battle of the Strait of Otranto (1917)
The 1917 Battle of the Strait of Otranto was the result of an Austro-Hungarian raid on the Otranto Barrage, an Allied naval blockade of the Strait of Otranto. The battle took place on 14–15 May 1917, and was the largest surface action in the Adriatic Sea during World War I. The Otranto Barrage was a fixed barrier, composed of lightly armed drifters with anti-submarine nets coupled with minefields and supported by Allied naval patrols.
The Austro-Hungarian navy planned to raid the Otranto Barrage with a force of three light cruisers and two destroyers under the command of Captain Miklós Horthy, in an attempt to break the barrier to allow U-boats freer access to the Mediterranean, and Allied shipping. An Allied force composed of ships from three navies responded to the raid and in the ensuing battle, heavily damaged the Austro-Hungarian cruiser SMS Novara. However, the rapid approach of the Austro-Hungarian relief force persuaded Rear Admiral Acton, the Allied commander, to retreat.
