HAM Counties of Origin North Carolina
Counties of origin of the HAM surname in North Carolina prior to 1830. From the book "A Short History of the HAM Surname in Virginia & NC." It gives a quick overview of the migration pattern for the HAM surname in North Carolina prior to 1830. Lists names of first inhabitants with the surname HAM(M) by County. As with the video on Virginia origins, I had to make a judgment call on which person to list and a few adjustments were made in order for the video to make better sense. Sometimes only the last name is mentioned, or the full name is mentioned in a document without any indication if the person actually lived there. In one case, a person is named, but the next year, three people were named as living in the County. Judgment call to include all three (1790 Franklin County). Richard HAM and wife Diana are mentioned in Granville, Bute, Warren, and Wayne Counties. As with (Old) Rhappahannock County in Virginia, Bute County was abolished. So, a judgement call was made as to which County to include them (Warren or Franklin Counties) for this video. This does not include the additional surpluses that exist in the school districts, cities, or counties in North Carolina. Govt surpluses are funds that are not required for the Govt to function within the annual budget. At the end of every fiscal year governments should have little or no cash/investments on hand. I can see in the NC governments own CAFR that the NC govt had billions in cash and investments on hand at the end of the fiscal year 2008. Somehow these cash and investment revenues are not being recycled back through the budget process for the next year, but are being held year after year. The TV news only talks about the budget; and the budget only covers a portion of the financial resources of the NC Govt. The TV news never mentions that there are other groups of funds that are not a part of the budget process. The complete list of these funds and the budget requirements are found in the CAFR. Concealed Gun Permit Rate
Western North Carolina counties are taking the lead in the number of concealed gun permits compared to the rest of the state. According to a state Justice Department database, the top 10 counties with conceal and carry permits are all west of Charlotte, when looking at the per capita ranking. Haywood County comes in number 9 on the list. The sheriff's department confirms the number of permits is on the rise...520 already this year, compared to 589 for all of 2011. Those numbers come as no surprise to a Waynesville gun store. Lynn Bradley with CMT Carolina Tactical says he refers 50 to 75 men and woman of all ages and police officers every month for conceal and carry training. In the per capita analysis, Cherokee County tops the list for permits. Mitchell, Macon, and Graham counties are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Chewy (Biker Dog) participated in Rolling Thunder NC4 "POW Honor Ride." There was a very good turnout. Funds raised help send North Carolina ex-POW's to Andersonville, GA in September for the National POW Recognition Day. Chewy's Iron Butt friends from Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association travelled to Raleigh to support Rolling Thunder. Law enforcement officers in multiple cities and counties assisted with route safety. Staging was at Ray Price Harley-Davidson (Raleigh, NC) and the after-ride dinner was at BoneDaddy's Hideaway (Raleigh, NC). (Video created at www.youtube.com

WNC Most Dangerous Roads
North Carolina's rural counties are the deadliest for drivers with two mountain counties at the top of the list. AAA Carolinas released its analysis of the most dangerous counties in 2011, which looked at the number of deaths per mile traveled. Clay County had the highest rate, followed by Graham County. Polk County made the top five most dangerous for tractor trailer collisions. Graham County is the most dangerous for motorcyclists, topping the list for collisions injuries and fatal crashes. However, neighboring Swain County was ranked as the safest county for not being in a vehicle collision. While Yancey County had the smallest number of fatal crashes per mile.

BEST VIEWED IN HD AND FULLSCREEN (with scaling off)
Midnight Sun: A natural phenomenon occurring in the summer months north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle where the sun never fully sets and remains visible 24 hours a day.
This short time lapse film was shot during the Icelandic Midnight Sun in June of 2011.
For 17 days I travelled solo around the entire island shooting almost 24 hours, sleeping in the car, and eating whenever I had the time. During my days shooting this film I shot 38,000 images, travelled some 2900 miles, and saw some of the most amazing, beautiful, and indescribable landscapes on the planet. Iceland is absolutely one of the most beautiful and unusual places you could ever imagine. Especially during the Midnight Sun when the quality of light hitting the landscape is very unusual, and very spectacular.
Iceland is a landscape photographers paradise and playground, and should be number 1 on every photographers must visit list. Iceland during the Midnight Sun is in sort of a permanent state of sunset. The sun never full sets and travels horizontally across the horizon throughout the night, as can be seen in the opening shot and at the :51 second mark in the video.
During the Arctic summer, sunset was at midnight and sunrise was at 3am. The Arctic summer sun provided 24 hours a day of light, with as much as 6 hours daily of "Golden light". Once the sun had set it wouldn't even get dark enough for the stars to come out, and they don't start to reappear until August.
My advice to everyone out there, photographer or not, is simple... You MUST visit Iceland sometime during your lifetime. You will never regret it.

Patterned by Nature was commissioned by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (http://naturalsciences.org) for the newly built Nature Research Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The exhibit celebrates our abstraction of nature’s infinite complexity into patterns through the scientific process, and through our perceptions. It brings to light the similarity of patterns in our universe, across all scales of space and time.
10 feet wide and 90 feet in length, this sculptural ribbon winds through the five story atrium of the museum and is made of 3600 tiles of LCD glass. It runs on roughly 75 watts, less power than a laptop computer. Animations are created by independently varying the transparency of each piece of glass.
The content cycles through twenty programs, ranging from clouds to rain drops to colonies of bacteria to flocking birds to geese to cuttlefish skin to pulsating black holes. The animations were created through a combination of algorithmic software modeling of natural phenomena and compositing of actual footage.
An eight channel soundtrack accompanies the animations on the ribbon, giving visitors clues to the identity of the pixelated movements. In addition, two screens show high resolution imagery and text revealing the content on the ribbon at any moment.

My license was suspended because of a DWI, what do I do? What is an ALR hearing and how do I get my driver's license back? DWI license suspension: An arrest for a DWI may result in a license suspension but there are options available to contest the suspension or to allow you to continue to drive legally despite the suspension. After an arrest for a DWI, you have 15 days to request an ALR hearing. A criminal defense attorney may request the hearing for you or you may request one yourself prior to hiring an attorney. ALR hearings are used to contest driver's license suspensions. At an ALR hearing, license suspensions may be overturned completely where no suspension ultimately results or the suspension may be postponed until a later time pending the outcome of the hearing. If an ALR hearing is unsuccessful in overturning a license suspension, there are still options available so that you may continue to legally drive during your license suspension.
