He reached the peak of his popularity in the 1970s, with hit singles such as "You Oughta Be With Me," "I'm Still In Love With You," "Love and Happiness", and "Let's Stay Together". In 2005, Rolling Stone named him #65 in their list of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time'. The nomination, written by Justin Timberlake, stated that "people are born to do certain things, and Al was born to make us smile." Otis Redding
Otis Ray Redding, Jr. (September 9, 1941 December 10, 1967) was an American soul singer. Often called the "King of Soul", he is renowned for an ability to convey strong emotion through his voice. According to the website of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (where he was inducted in 1989), Redding's name is "synonymous with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm and blues into a form of funky, secular testifying." In addition, rock critic Jon Landau said in 1967, "Otis Redding is rock & roll". Redding died in a plane crash at the age of 26, one month before his biggest hit, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay", was released.

De La Soul is an American hip hop trio formed in 1987 on Long Island, New York.The band is best known for their eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres. The members are Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) and Vincent Mason (PA Pasemaster Mase, Maseo, Plug Three). The three formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Prince Paul with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'". Prince Paul was also sometimes referred to as Plug Four. The Plug names are alleged to come from the numbers that each bandmate's microphone was labeled on the soundboard. With its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits, the band's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as a hip-hop masterpiece. It is also the band's biggest commercial success to date, with their subsequent albums selling progressively less, despite receiving praise from critics. A measure of 3 Feet High and Rising's cross-over appeal was the fact that it was voted Album of the Year by NME Magazine, a title better known for its taste in guitar-based music. De La Soul has influenced numerous other hip hop artists such as Camp Lo, Black Eyed Peas, and Digable Planets. They were also instrumental in the early stages of rapper/actor Mos Def's career, and are a core part of the Spitkicker collective. They are the longest standing Native Tongues Posse group, after the Jungle Brothers.

De La Soul, 3 Feet High And Rising, the proverbial backbone of everything that hip hop did in the '90s. Prince Paul's production on this album is the GOAT. Set off everything else in hip hop, and could literally not be done anymore, Paul's Boutique is the only album on it's level from a production standpoint. Every track is a gem. It's a shame that this album, and most of De La's shit isn't on iTunes, but definitely go pick this album up in CD form from your local album store or some shit. Worth it.

Soul (ang.dusza) – gatunek muzyki rozrywkowej wywodzący się z rhythm and bluesa, początkowo będąc jego częścią.
Soul wykazał się wielką żywotnością, jest grany i popularny do dziś, wykształcając niezliczoną ilość podstylów. Cechami charakterystycznymi gatunku są:
- bogate brzmienie oparte na instrumentarium pochodzącym z R&B.
- wyraźne, często synkopowane rytmy
- zmienne nastroje od bardzo dynamicznych po liryczne
- wielogłosowe ornamentalne śpiewy[potrzebne źródło].
Soul, w odróżnieniu od klasycznego R&B, odróżnia przede wszystkim inny klimat. Podczas gdy R&B jest głównie nastawione na tworzenie muzyki tanecznej, soul jest spokojniejszy, skłania do refleksji, jego teksty są przepełnione "wartościami duchowymi" i częstymi odniesieniami do Biblii i Boga.
Nie ma w tym nic dziwnego, biorąc pod uwagę fakt, że zespoły soulowe powstawały najczęściej z chórków kościelnych (poprzez dodanie do chórków instrumentarium i rytmów R&B).
Soul początkowo był muzyką czarnoskórych Amerykanów, lecz z czasem zdobył wielką popularność na całym świecie i stał się zjawiskiem międzykulturowym.
Przyjmuje się, że twórcą tego gatunku jest Ray Charles Robinson znany jako Ray Charles.
Do wybranych przedstawicieli muzyki soul należą: Sam Cooke (uznawany za twórcę gatunku soul), Alicia Keys, grupy związane z Motown Records, James Brown, Michael Jackson (we wczesnych latach swojej twórczości), Sly Stone,Duffy, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Diana Ross, Al Green, Erykah Badu, Whitney Houston, Anastacia, Angie Stone, Joss Stone czy Amy Winehouse, Jesse McCartney jak także Nick Jonas and the Administration, Adele.

Karierę wokalisty zaczął w korpusie rozrywkowym armii Stanów Zjednoczonych w czasie II wojny światowej. Zauważony przez Boba Hope'a, został zaangażowany do rewii w "Paramount Theater" w Nowym Jorku. Popularność osiągnął w połowie lat 50. W 1950 podpisał kontrakt z wytwórnią płytową Columbia i nagrał Because of You, swój pierwszy wielki przebój. Rozpoczął występy z orkiestrą Percy'ego Faitha. Charakterystyczny dla późniejszych nagrań był album Bennett Sings, Basie Swings (1958), na którym wykrystalizował jazzowy styl swojej wokalistyki. Długoletnia współpraca z pianistą Ralphem Sharonem zaowocowała m.in. koncertem zarejestrowanym na płycie Tony Bennett at Carnegie Hall. W latach 1978-1985 artysta nie nagrywał, skoncentrował się wtedy na malarstwie. W końcu lat 80. wrócił do muzyki, nagrał wtedy The Art of Excellence z udziałem Raya Charlesa oraz z triem Sharona - Bennett/Berlin. W 1995 w MTV został zarejestrowany koncert, którego płytowa wersja znajdowała się przez 35 tygodni na liście bestsellerów jazzowych. W 2010 roku wziął udział w nagraniu piosenki We Are the World na rzecz ofiar trzęsienia ziemi na Haiti.
Wielokrotnie wyróżniany nagrodą Grammy. Laureat NEA Jazz Masters Award[3] 2006.

Winehouse urodziła się i dorastała w Southgate, północnej dzielnicy Londynu; wywodziła się z rodziny żydowskiej o tradycjach jazzowych[4]. Jej ojciec Mitchell jest taksówkarzem i muzykiem, matka – farmaceutką, piosenkarka miała też starszego brata Alexa. Uczęszczała do Ashmole School. W wieku dziesięciu lat założyła krótko działającą grupę muzyczną o nazwie Sweet 'n' Sour. Artystka swój zespół opisała jako „żydowskie odzwierciedlenie zespołu Salt-N-Pepa”. Po rozpadzie Sweet 'n' Sour dołączyła do Sylvia Young Theatre School, jednak rok później (w wieku trzynastu lat) została wyrzucona ze szkoły za kolczyk w nosie[5]. Po tym incydencie uczęszczała do BRIT School.
Winehouse umiała grać na gitarze od trzynastego roku życia; śpiewała profesjonalnie od szesnastych urodzin, kiedy to jej przyjaciel Tyler James, wokalista soulowy, wysłał nagranie demo Amy wytwórni A&R Records[4]. Po rozmowach z różnymi wytwórniami płytowymi, Winehouse dołączyła do Island Records(Universal Music), z którą była związana do końca życia.

Debiutancki album Winehouse, Frank, został wydany dnia 20 października 2003 roku. Wyprodukowany został głównie przez Salaam Remi. Większość utworów na płycie inspirowana jest muzyką jazzową. Wszystkie piosenki w albumie zostały napisane przez Amy; jedynie dwa covery nie posiadają wkładu własnego artystki. Album został ciepło przyjęty przez krytyków muzycznych[6]. Znawcy muzyki jazzowej podkreślają, iż głos Winehouse można porównywać do głosów takich śpiewaczek jak Sarah Vaughan czy Nina Simone[7].
W roku 2004 Amy Winehouse została nominowana do BRIT Awards w kategorii „Najlepsza solowa artystka”. W tym samym czasie debiutancki album Amy uzyskał w jej rodzinnym kraju status platynowego, a ona sama wygrała nagrodę najlepszego twórcy tekstów muzycznych Ivor Novello Awards za utwór „Stronger Than Me” (wyprodukowany przez Salaam Remi)[8]. Płyta została nominowana do nagrody Mercury Music Prize 2004. W tym samym roku Amy pojawiła się na takich festiwalach jak Glastonbury Festival, czy V Festival.

Drugi studyjny album Winehouse, Back to Black, ukazał się 30 października 2006 i od razu podbił szczyt brytyjskiej listy sprzedaży UK Album Chart debiutując na pierwszej pozycji 1. Album sprzedał się w ponad milionie egzemplarzy (jedynie Wielka Brytania). Płyta została wyprodukowana przez Marka Ronsona oraz Salaam Remi.
Ponieważ odniósł ogromny sukces na Wyspach Brytyjskich, Winehouse zdecydowała się wydać album w różnych krajach na całym świecie, m.in. w Stanach Zjednoczonych, gdzie podobnie jak w UK longplay sprzedał się w ponad milionie egzemplarzy oraz uzyskał status potrójnej platyny[9]. Najwyższa pozycja na amerykańskiej liście sprzedaży Billboard 200 to 6. miejsce.
Pierwszym, a zarazem głównym singlem promującym album był utwór „Rehab”, który odniósł sukces zarówno w Wielkiej Brytanii zajmując 7. pozycję, jak i w Stanach Zjednoczonych (miejsce 9).
W roku 2007 album Back to Black został nominowany do nagrody BRIT Awards w kategorii „Najlepszy album”. Mimo iż nie on zdobył tego tytułu, sama wokalistka zdobyła tę nagrodę w innej kategorii – „Najlepsza solowa artystka”. W 2008 Amy Winehouse otrzymała pięć Nagród Grammy. Back to Black został wyróżniony jako najlepszy album popowy, Rehab jako nagranie roku i piosenka roku, a sama piosenkarka jako najlepsza wokalistka roku (Rehab) i jako nowicjuszka roku.

Na 5 grudnia 2011 roku zaplanowano premierę pośmiertnego albumu Lioness: Hidden Treasures. Na płycie znajdzie się 11 niepublikowanych utworów oraz duet z Tonym Bennettem Body and Soul. Wyboru utworów dokonali producenci Salaam Remi i Mark Ronson[10].

18 maja 2007 w Miami Winehouse poślubiła Blake'a Fieldera-Civila. 16 lipca 2009 doszło jednak do rozwodu, którego głównym powodem była zdrada ze strony artystki oraz niewielka ilość czasu, jaki małżonkowie spędzali razem.
Winehouse była uzależniona od alkoholu i narkotyków. Ponadto oświadczyła publicznie, że ma problemy z depresją i cierpi na bulimię. W 2008 roku jej ojciec przyznał także, że wokalistka cierpiała na rozedmę płuc, które wydolne były w zaledwie 70%. Główny wpływ miał na to nikotynizm piosenkarki[potrzebne źródło].
Występ Winehouse 18 czerwca 2011 w Belgradzie inaugurował jej europejską trasę koncertową. Artystka odurzona alkoholem pojawiła się na scenie ze znacznym opóźnieniem, miała problemy z koncentracją, poruszaniem się oraz śpiewaniem. Prawdopodobnie została ona wówczas, mimo widocznego upojenia, zmuszona do występu, mimo iż nie pamiętała w jakim mieście się znajduje, imion członków zespołu, ani tekstów piosenek[11]. Nawet w takim stanie była ona świadoma dziejącej się katastrofy i wielokrotnie usiłowała zejść ze sceny, jednak była powstrzymywana przez członków zespołu i ochronę[12]. Z powodu stanu zdrowia piosenkarki odwołano dwa kolejne koncerty[13][11][14]. 21 czerwca ogłoszono, że zostały odwołane wszystkie pokazy jej europejskiej trasy koncertowej[15][3]. 20 lipca pojawiła się gościnnie na koncercie swojej chrześnicy, Dionne Bromfield w Londynie. Było to ostatnie publiczne wystąpienie w jej życiu.
23 lipca 2011, około godziny 16 (17 czasu polskiego), Winehouse została znaleziona martwa w swoim mieszkaniu w londyńskiej dzielnicy Camden[3]. Policja obecna w domu piosenkarki potwierdziła informację o jej zgonie, jednak jego przyczyna nie była jeszcze znana[16].
Amy Winehouse została pochowana 26 lipca 2011 w obrządku żydowskim na cmentarzu Edgwarebury w Londynie. W uroczystościach pogrzebowych udział wzięli między innymi Kelly Osbourne i Mark Ronson, a także jej ostatni partner życiowy Reg Traviss.
26 października 2011 ujawniono wyniki śledztwa w sprawie śmierci Amy Winehouse, którym dowodziła Suzanne Greenaway. Śledztwo wykazało, że był to nieszczęśliwy wypadek spowodowany dobrowolnym wypiciem dużej ilości alkoholu po czym doszło do wstrząsu wywołanego intensywnym przyjmowaniem alkoholu po okresie abstynencji. Jak ogłoszono kilka godzin po ukazaniu się raportu ze śledztwa, Winehouse miała 416 mg alkoholu na 100 ml krwi, co odpowiada 4 promilom[17].

Malcolm McCormick urodził się 19 stycznia 1992 jest dzieckiem architekta i fotograf mieszkał w dzielnicy Point Breeze miasta Pittsburgh w stanie Pennsylvania. Jego ojciec jest chrześcijaninem natomiast matka to żydówka. Malcolm został wychowany w tradycji żydowskiej. Przed szkoła Taylor Allderdice High School Malcolm uczeszczał do Winchester Thurston School. W liceum zdecydował, że skupi się na swojej karierze muzycznej. Rozwijał się równiez muzycznie opanował grę na pianinie, gitarze, perkusji i gitarze basowej.

Przed rozpoczeciem kariery solowej Miller był częścią grupy The Ill Spoken współtworzac ją z raperem z Pittsburgha Beedie'm. The Ill spoken wydali mixtape How High w 2008 roku. Wtedy zmienił pseudonim na Mac Miller, wcześniej znany był jako EZ Mac, i wydał mixtape But My Macking Ain't Easy w 2007 roku w wieku 15 lat. W 2009 roku Mac Miller wydał dwa mixtapy ”The Jukebox: Prelude to Class Clown”” i ”The High Life zanim otrzymał”” promocje od Rostrum Records.
Na poczatku 2010 roku Miller był promowany przez Rostum Records. Prezes rostum Benjy Grinberg poznał Millera podcza nagrania z Wiz Khalifa w ID Labs.
