Ashland, Kentucky
Ashland, formerly known as Poage Settlement, is a city in Boyd County, Kentucky, United States, nestled along the banks of the Ohio River. The population was 21,981 at the 2000 census. Ashland is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 288,649. Ashland is the second largest city within the MSA, after Huntington. Ashland serves as an important economic and medical center for northeast Kentucky.
Ashland dates back to the migration of the Poage family from the Shenandoah Valley via the famed Cumberland Gap in 1786. They settled upon a homestead along the Ohio River and named it Poage's Landing. It remained an extended-family settlement until the mid-19th century. In 1854, the city name was changed to Ashland, after Henry Clay's Lexington estate, and to reflect the city's growing industrial base.
The city's early industrial growth was a result of Ohio's pig iron industry. It was not until 1854, that growth began to occur with the charter of the Kentucky Iron, Coal and Manufacturing Company by the Kentucky General Assembly. Major industrial employers in the first half of the 20th century included Armco, Ashland Oil and Refining Company, C&O Railroad, Allied Chemical and Dye Company's Semet Solvay and Mansbach Steel.

Bellefonte is a residential city in Greenup County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 837 at the 2000 census. Bellefonte is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 288,649.
Locally, Bellefonte is known for its upscale neighborhoods and the private Bellefonte Country Club, which has a championship level 18 hole golf course and formal ballroom.
Bellefonte was first incorporated on July 3, 1951, beginning with only 275 residents and developed in the latter half of the 20th century as a suburb of Ashland. It has long been known as the home of many of Ashland's business and professional elite. The exclusive nature of the city is evident by its demographic make up. Within the corporate limits, there are virtually no residents under the poverty line.

Covington, Kentucky
Covington is a city in Kenton County, Kentucky, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 40,640; it is the fifth-most-populous city in Kentucky. It is one of two county seats of Kenton County. Covington is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers. Covington is part of the Cincinnati – Northern Kentucky metropolitan area and is separated from Cincinnati by the Ohio River and from Newport by the Licking River. Covington is located within the Upland South region of the United States of America.
Covington was established in 1814 when John Gano, Richard Gano, and Thomas Carneal purchased 150 acres (0.6 km2) on the west side of the Licking River at its confluence with the Ohio River, referred to as "the Point," from Thomas Kennedy for $50,000. The city was incorporated by the Kentucky General Assembly a year later. Covington experienced growth during most of the 19th century, only to decline during the Great Depression and the middle 20th century. The city has seen some redevelopment during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Flatwoods is a suburban city of the larger and nearby Ashland, Kentucky, although located in a different county as Ashland, in Greenup County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 10,983 at the 2010 census. Bobby Crager is the city's mayor. Flatwoods is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 288,649.
Locally, Flatwoods is considered to be a "bedroom community", as it has no large employer within the city. Many residents work for CSX Transportation, AK Steel, Marathon Oil, King's Daughters Medical Center, or Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. There are five institutions of higher education located within 30–40 minutes of Flatwoods. The Ohio University Southern Campus, Marshall University, Kentucky Christian University, Ashland Community and Technical College and, Shawnee State University.
The area now known as the City of Flatwoods was originally named Advance; Advance Methodist Church formed a Sunday school beginning in 1860. The name was later changed to Cheap, after John Cheap, a blind Methodist minister. The original farming community returned to the name of Advance when a post office was established in 1918. In 1938, the post office was renamed Flatwoods, and the town was incorporated in 1938 under that name. Flatwoods is named for the area's unique topography, a belt of flat wooded land in the ancient Teays River Valley, on an elevation of approximately 650 feet or higher, just south of the Ohio River Valley. The availability of flat level land and low tax rates made Flatwoods a local "hot spot" of new construction in the 1950s and 60's, when many upper middle class tract housing developments were built and quickly inhabited. A main contributor to Flatwoods' growth was the fact that nearby Ashland had developed much of its available land prior to 1960, with little new construction possible within its corporation limits.

Russell is located at 38°31′5″N 82°41′52″W / 38.51806°N 82.69778°W / 38.51806; -82.69778 (38.518176, -82.697680).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10 km2), all land.
Its unique, hilly topography was first noted in 1823 by its founder, Jeff Moore, who decided that the site would serve as an excellent strategic position against attacks by local Native American tribes.
Russell is located within the Russell Independent School District, which it shares with its neighbors, Flatwoods and Bellefonte. The main campus, which includes Russell High School, Russell Middle School, Russell Primary School and the Russell Area Technology Center, sit on the Russell/Flatwoods city line (all of the school's mailing addresses are Russell, but they receive primary police and fire protection from Flatwoods). In addition, the district's central office is located in downtown Russell. The Russell High School football field also is home to a fire breathing Red Devil, the school's mascot, named Rudy. Rudy sits atop the scoreboard. Russell High School was the 2005 Kentucky State 2A football Champion.

Paul G. Blazer
Paul Garrett Blazer (September 19, 1890 – September 9, 1966) was, starting in 1924, president of the Ashland Refining Co., a division of the financially shaky Swiss Oil Company of Lexington, which had hired him. At the time, the company operated mainly out of a small refinery in Catlettsburg. By 1936, under Blazer's leadership, the Company merged with Swiss Oil to form the Ashland Oil and Refining Company.
Blazer's success as manager, recognized by major stock holders, gave him the power to run Ashland as his own operation, though at no point during his tenure as chief executive officer (1936-1957), did he own a controlling interest in the company.
The liberally educated Blazer, with his impressive mathematical and analytical skills, set the tone of the informal organization. He seldom used his office to discuss matters with his subordinates and visited them instead in their offices on his regular walks around the company.
Blazer was succeeded as chief executive officer by his nephew, Rexford S. Blazer (1957-1965).

The deal, worth $930 million, is forecast to close before the end of the quarter in March. Ashland's global distribution business makes $3.4 billion annually. Ashland Inc (NYSE:ASH) announced today it is acquiring privately owned International Specialty Products Inc for $3.2 billion in cash. International Specialty Products, or ISP, is a specialty chemical manufacturer and will help expand Ashland's position in markets such as personal care, pharmaceuticals, and energy. For the twelve-month period ended March 31, 2011, ISP had approximately $1.6 billion in revenue, and EBITDA of about $360 million. Ashland Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James J. O'Brien said, "This defining transaction enables us to significantly expand our market positions in higher margin, higher growth and less cyclical global markets like personal care and pharmaceuticals. It broadens Ashland's presence within attractive growth areas like skin, hair and oral care, which are large and fast-growing segments of the $5-billion-plus personal care specialty ingredients market. In addition, we expect to more than double the size of our highest-margin functional ingredients business." ISP President and Chief Executive Officer Sunil Kumar said, "We are very enthusiastic about the opportunity to combine ISP with Ashland. Both companies have a strong commitment to serving customers with innovative solutions and technologies. Ashland Inc. (NYSE: ASH) is a Fortune 500 company which operates in more than 100 countries throughout the world. Presently based in Covington, Kentucky, in the United States, the company traces its roots back to Ashland, Kentucky (for which it is named).

Ashland was founded in 1924 as Ashland Refining Company of Ashland, Kentucky, by Paul G. Blazer.[1] In 1930, the nearby Tri-State Refining Company was purchased, adding 5,500 barrels per day of capacity to the company. The company continued to merge or acquire other oil companies, combining with Swiss Oil in 1936, Allied Oil in 1948, Aetna Oil in 1949, and purchasing Frontier Oil Refining and National Refining in 1950. By that time, the company began to diversify, adding petrochemicals to its portfolio with the acquisition of R. J. Brown Company in 1956 and United Carbon in 1963.
Diversification continued with the purchase of Warren Brothers in 1966, which later was to become Ashland Paving and Construction. A significant acquisition was made in 1967 when the company purchased ADM Chemical Group; whose chemical distribution business would go on to be one of the primary businesses of the company in the later part of the 20th century. In 1969, the company reorganized to form Ashland Petroleum, as well as entering into a joint venture in Coal Mining under the name Arch Mineral.
In the 1980s and early part of the 1990s, Ashland continued to expand, buying The Permian Corporation and merging it with Scurlock Oil Company in 1991 to form a subsidiary known as Scurlock Permian Corporation. In 1992, most of Unocal's chemical distribution business was acquired, making Ashland the top chemical distributor in North America. At this time, the Industrial Chemicals & Solvents (IC&S) division was established. The company's name was changed from "Ashland Oil" to the present "Ashland Inc." in 1995, which noted the reduced importance of oil in the overall business.
The late 1990s saw considerable change in the structure of the company. In 1998, the petroleum division merged with Marathon Oil to form Marathon Ashland Petroleum, LLC (MAP). Following that in 1999, Ashland agreed to sell its Scurlock Permian subsidiary to Plains All American Pipeline and the headquarters were moved from Russell, Kentucky, to Covington, Kentucky, although the company maintains an office in Russell. A monumental change came in 2005, when Ashland sold its shares of the Marathon Ashland Petroleum joint venture to Marathon Oil, effectively dissolving the remnants of their petroleum division. After the sale, the company was no longer involved in the refining or marketing of fuels. The original oil refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, is still in operation today and is owned and operated by Marathon. In 2006, Ashland sold APAC (the paving and construction division) to the Oldcastle Materials subsidiary of Oldcastle Inc. of Dublin, Ireland.
Ashland purchased the adhesive and emulsions divisions of Air Products & Chemicals in 2008.[2]
Ashland announced plans to acquire Hercules Inc. on July 11, 2008 for $3.3B.[3] On November 13, 2008, the transaction was completed.[4]
Ashland announced plans to sell its Distribution business known as Ashland Distribution to TPG Capital for $930 Million.[5] on November 8, 2010. The Ashland Distribution business has been a part of Ashland for more than 40 years. With revenues today of $3.4 billion, the Ashland Distribution business has approximately 2,000 employees across North America and Europe, and entered the China plastics market in 2009. The sale was finalized April 1, 2011 with a final sale price of 979 million(USD). The new privately held company is named Nexeo Solutions.[6]
In May 2011 Ashland announced that it had bought the privately owned company International Specialty Products inc (ISP) for $3.2 billion. ISP is a leading global supplier of specialty chemicals and performance enhancing products for consumer and industrial markets.
Valvoline Instant Oil Change moved into the Southern California area in March 2012 when the EZ Lube franchise had been purchased by Henley Enterprises, VIOC's largest franchisee.[7]

Ashland Specialty Ingredients[link]
The Specialty Ingredients division offers products, technologies and resources for solving formulation and product performance challenges. The markets that are being served include personal care, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, coatings and energy. In May 2011 Ashland bought the company ISP inc, which will be incorporated into the Ashland Specialty Ingredients division.
Ashland Performance Materials[link]
Combining the Casting Solutions, Composite Polymers, and Specialty Polymers & Adhesives businesses, Performance Materials provides products for the construction, packaging, transport, marine, and metal casting industries. Twenty nine manufacturing facilities are located in 15 countries around the world. Casting Solutions makes Foundry Binder Resins, chemicals, sleeves, and filters for the metalworking industry. The Composite Polymers business sells unsaturated polyester resins, vinyl ester resins, and gelcoats, for use in Composites. Finally, the Specialty Polymers & Adhesives business manufacturers various adhesives and resins for the transportation, aerospace, and construction industries.
Ashland Consumer Markets (Valvoline)[link]
Valvoline is one of the largest producers of motor oil in the United States. Valvoline was founded by Dr. John Ellis who formulated a petroleum-based lubricant in 1866 and trademarked the Valvoline name in 1873 in Binghamton, NY. Currently, Valvoline World Headquarters are in Lexington, KY. Valvoline has been serving American motorists longer than any other motor oil marketer.[8]
In North America, Valvoline is divided into two main sections. The "Do it for me" (DIFM) business, which includes over 800 company and franchise Valvoline Instant Oil Change locations; a contractural "non franchise" branch of automotive care facilities named Valvoline Express Care; and the generally supply agreement only "We Feature" outlets. The "Do it yourself" (DIY) business includes a wide variety of automotive related products. Included in these are Valvoline lubricants, along with Car Brite commercial automotive appearance products, Eagle One consumer automotive appearance products, Pyroil automotive chemicals, and Zerex antifreeze. Outside of North America, the company has very few auto care businesses, but rather focuses on selling to consumers as well as OEM manufacturers.
Ashland Water Technologies[link]
In the Water Technologies division, Ashland makes chemical and non-chemical water treatment products for industrial, commercial, and municipal customers. This includes influent and wastewater treatment, and boiling and cooling water treatment chemicals. The business was recently expanded with the acquisition of the French company OTENE in 2000,and Degussa AG's water treatment business in 2006. In late 2008 with the closure of the Hercules Inc. acquisition, the water and papers division was created with expected revenues in excess of $2 billion. In June 2009, the Drew Marine division of Ashland Water Technologies was sold to J. F. Lehman & Co. for approximately $120 million.[9] Drew Industrial remained an operating business of Ashland Water Technologies.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst identified Ashland as the 50th-largest corporate producer of air pollution in the United States, with roughly 238,000 pounds of toxic chemicals released into the air in 2002.[10] Major pollutants indicated by the study included chromium compounds, polycyclic aromatic compounds, diisocyanates, manganese, and nickel. [11] However, this data is based upon old assumptions. Since the study, overall corporate emissions have been reduced by approximately 70% due to the re-organization and sale of some divisions of the company.[citation needed] This includes the sale of the coal division which operated a coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania, as well as the paving division which operated numerous asphalt plants. Ashland had an oil spill in 1988 that spilled into the nearby river.
