These people -- dubbed radicals or even communists by the opposition -- believe this organizing movement has critical importance in their effort to create change.
The year is 1936 -- not 2012 -- a turbulent time for autoworkers whose determination and courage helped the labor movement gain a better quality of life for workers and, ultimately, create the American middle class.
Known as "White Shirt Day," Feb. 11 marks the 75th anniversary of the most famous of these sit-down actions, the 1936-1937 General Motors Flint Sit-Down Strike. Men and women throughout the UAW wear white-collar attire traditionally donned by management to remember the sacrifices and victories of workers.
But winning was no small task.
"There were people dropping over because of the heat, and other workers were told to step over them," recalled Geraldine Blankinship, 92, who supported the Women's Auxiliary and Emergency Brigade when she was just 17.
"They didn't slow down the line, and they didn't stop it. They just dragged people away. It was such an inhumane thing to do," added Blankinship, whose father, Jay Green, was vice chair of the strike. She spent many nights working with her mother, Ida, a red-caped beret-wearing brigade member, who fought bravely to deter the company's actions.
Workers at GM's Fisher Plant in Flint, Mich., were tired of fearing not only for their safety, but also for job security, so they initiated a sit-down strike by locking themselves inside the plant for as long as it would take for the company to recognize their right to form a union and negotiate for higher pay and better working conditions. The Flint standoff inspired workers from other GM facilities to sit down in solidarity as well.
The future was unknown for these brave, defiant workers who feared losing their jobs, the threat of police intervention and even of their families abandoning them while they were locked inside.
"I was kind of afraid I'd have to go back to waitressing," said Pauline Polsgrove, 93, with a laugh. She's the last surviving female sit-down worker from 1936.
Richard Wiecorek, 95, recalled how "One guy, he had five kids and he'd get so nervous, he'd pass out. He didn't know if he was going to get his job back."
The workers' fortitude would be challenged when police arrived to force them out of the plant, but their spirit and strong community support was too strong to break their drive.
Eventually, something incredible happened to help bring the standoff closer to an end when then-Michigan Gov. Frank Murphy called in the National Guard -- to go to the plants and protect workers from police and corporate thugs.
The strike ended after 44 days on Feb. 11, 1937, when GM recognized the UAW and negotiated a first contract. Sit-downers walked out of the plant to find a parade with thousands of supporters.
James Todd, 98, who still teaches square dancing three times a week, was a janitor in 1936 before the strike. Todd is proud of the successes that came as a result of the sit-down movement.
"We all got better jobs ... and for black people, we got jobs that we didn't get before because most of the time, we were just sweeping floors. But after that, we all went on machines."
In today's climate, with workers facing corporate-lobbied politicians trying to eliminate collective bargaining rights, Wiecorek has some time-honored wisdom: "If you have a union, hang on to it."

A sit-down strike is a form of civil disobedience in which an organized group of workers, usually employed at a factory or other centralized location, take possession of the workplace by "sitting down" at their stations, effectively preventing their employers from replacing them with strikebreakers or, in some cases, moving production to other locations.
Workers have used this technique since the beginning of the 20th century, not only in the United States, but also in Italy, Poland, Yugoslavia, and France.
The [Industrial Workers of the World] (IWW) were the first American union to use the sit-down strike. On December 10, 1906, at the General Electric Works in Schenectady, New York, 3,000 workers sat down on the job and stopped production to protest the dismissal of three fellow IWW members. The United Auto Workers staged successful sit-down strikes in the 1930s, most famously in the Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936-1937. In Flint, Michigan, strikers occupied several General Motors plants for more than forty days, and repelled the efforts of the police and National Guard to retake them. A wave of sit-down strikes followed, but diminished by the end of the decade as the courts and the National Labor Relations Board held that sit-down strikes were illegal and sit-down strikers could be fired. While some sit-down strikes still occur in the United States, they tend to be spontaneous and short-lived.

Moore criticizes globalization, large corporations, assault weapon ownership, U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, the Iraq War, the American health care system, and capitalism in his written and cinematic works.
Moore was born in Flint, Michigan, and raised in Davison, a suburb of Flint, by parents Veronica (née Wall), a secretary, and Frank Moore, an automotive assembly-line worker. At that time, the city of Flint was home to many General Motors factories, where his parents and grandfather worked. His uncle LaVerne was one of the founders of the United Automobile Workers labor union and participated in the Flint Sit-Down Strike.

These people -- dubbed radicals or even communists by the opposition -- believe this organizing movement has critical importance in their effort to create change.
The year is 1936 -- not 2012 -- a turbulent time for autoworkers whose determination and courage helped the labor movement gain a better quality of life for workers and, ultimately, create the American middle class.
Known as "White Shirt Day," Feb. 11 marks the 75th anniversary of the most famous of these sit-down actions, the 1936-1937 General Motors Flint Sit-Down Strike. Men and women throughout the UAW wear white-collar attire traditionally donned by management to remember the sacrifices and victories of workers.
But winning was no small task.
"There were people dropping over because of the heat, and other workers were told to step over them," recalled Geraldine Blankinship, 92, who supported the Women's Auxiliary and Emergency Brigade when she was just 17.
"They didn't slow down the line, and they didn't stop it. They just dragged people away. It was such an inhumane thing to do," added Blankinship, whose father, Jay Green, was vice chair of the strike. She spent many nights working with her mother, Ida, a red-caped beret-wearing brigade member, who fought bravely to deter the company's actions.
Workers at GM's Fisher Plant in Flint, Mich., were tired of fearing not only for their safety, but also for job security, so they initiated a sit-down strike by locking themselves inside the plant for as long as it would take for the company to recognize their right to form a union and negotiate for higher pay and better working conditions. The Flint standoff inspired workers from other GM facilities to sit down in solidarity as well.
The future was unknown for these brave, defiant workers who feared losing their jobs, the threat of police intervention and even of their families abandoning them while they were locked inside.
"I was kind of afraid I'd have to go back to waitressing," said Pauline Polsgrove, 93, with a laugh. She's the last surviving female sit-down worker from 1936.
Richard Wiecorek, 95, recalled how "One guy, he had five kids and he'd get so nervous, he'd pass out. He didn't know if he was going to get his job back."
The workers' fortitude would be challenged when police arrived to force them out of the plant, but their spirit and strong community support was too strong to break their drive.
Eventually, something incredible happened to help bring the standoff closer to an end when then-Michigan Gov. Frank Murphy called in the National Guard -- to go to the plants and protect workers from police and corporate thugs.
The strike ended after 44 days on Feb. 11, 1937, when GM recognized the UAW and negotiated a first contract. Sit-downers walked out of the plant to find a parade with thousands of supporters.
James Todd, 98, who still teaches square dancing three times a week, was a janitor in 1936 before the strike. Todd is proud of the successes that came as a result of the sit-down movement.
"We all got better jobs ... and for black people, we got jobs that we didn't get before because most of the time, we were just sweeping floors. But after that, we all went on machines."
In today's climate, with workers facing corporate-lobbied politicians trying to eliminate collective bargaining rights, Wiecorek has some time-honored wisdom: "If you have a union, hang on to it."

The Flint standoff inspired workers from other GM facilities to sit down in solidarity as well.
The future was unknown for these brave, defiant workers who feared losing their jobs, the threat of police intervention and even of their families abandoning them while they were locked inside.
"I was kind of afraid I'd have to go back to waitressing," said Pauline Polsgrove, 93, with a laugh. She's the last surviving female sit-down worker from 1936.
Richard Wiecorek, 95, recalled how "One guy, he had five kids and he'd get so nervous, he'd pass out. He didn't know if he was going to get his job back."
The workers' fortitude would be challenged when police arrived to force them out of the plant, but their spirit and strong community support was too strong to break their drive.
Eventually, something incredible happened to help bring the standoff closer to an end when then-Michigan Gov. Frank Murphy called in the National Guard -- to go to the plants and protect workers from police and corporate thugs.
The strike ended after 44 days on Feb. 11, 1937, when GM recognized the UAW and negotiated a first contract. Sit-downers walked out of the plant to find a parade with thousands of supporters.
James Todd, 98, who still teaches square dancing three times a week, was a janitor in 1936 before the strike. Todd is proud of the successes that came as a result of the sit-down movement.
"We all got better jobs ... and for black people, we got jobs that we didn't get before because most of the time, we were just sweeping floors. But after that, we all went on machines."
In today's climate, with workers facing corporate-lobbied politicians trying to eliminate collective bargaining rights, Wiecorek has some time-honored wisdom: "If you have a union, hang on to it."

The UAW was founded in May 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, under the auspices of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) after years of agitation within the labor federation. The AFL had focused on organizing craft unions and avoided large factories. But at its 1935 convention, a caucus of industrial unions led by John L. Lewis formed the Committee for Industrial Organization, the original CIO, within the AFL. Within one year, the AFL suspended the unions in the CIO, and these, including the UAW, formed the rival Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). It attracted young left-wing activists and Communists, in contrast to the older, established AFL leaders.
The UAW rapidly found success in organizing with the sit-down strike — first in a General Motors plant in Atlanta, Georgia in 1936, and more famously in the Flint sit-down strike that began on December 29, 1936. That strike ended in February 1937 after Michigan's governor Frank Murphy played the role of mediator, negotiating recognition of the UAW by General Motors. The next month, auto workers at Chrysler won recognition of the UAW as their representative in a sit-down strike.
The UAW's next target was the Ford Motor Company, which had long resisted unionization. Ford manager Harry Bennett used brute force to keep the union out of Ford, and his Ford Service Department was set up as an internal security, intimidation, and espionage unit within the company. It was not reluctant to use violence against union organizers and sympathizers (see The Battle of the Overpass). It took until 1941 for Ford to agree to a collective bargaining agreement with the UAW....
UAW has been credited for aiding in the auto industry rebound in the 21st century and blamed for seeking generous benefit packages in the past which in part led to the automotive industry crisis of 2008-2009.... In a November 23, 2008, New York Times editorial, Andrew Ross Sorkin claimed that the average UAW worker was paid $70 per hour, including health and pension costs, while Toyota workers in the US receive $10 to $20 less.... According to the 2007 GM Annual Report, typical autoworkers earn a base wage of approximately $28 per hour. Following the 2007 National Agreement, the base starting wage was lowered to about $15 per hour.[ A second-tier wage of $14.50 an hour, which applies only to newly hired workers, is lower than the average wage in non-union auto companies in the Deep South...

The nation is in economic crisis, unemployment is high, people are losing homes, workers are afraid to unionize and families, swamped in debt, struggle for a better life. Worldwide, masses stand up against corporate greed and demand a better quality of life by sitting down and occupying space in a unified effort to be heard. These people -- dubbed radicals or even communists by the opposition -- believe this organizing movement has critical importance in their effort to create change.
The year is 1936 -- not 2012 -- a turbulent time for autoworkers whose determination and courage helped the labor movement gain a better quality of life for workers and, ultimately, create the American middle class.
Known as "White Shirt Day," Feb. 11 marks the 75th anniversary of the most famous of these sit-down actions, the 1936-1937 General Motors Flint Sit-Down Strike. Men and women throughout the UAW wear white-collar attire traditionally donned by management to remember the sacrifices and victories of workers.
But winning was no small task.
"There were people dropping over because of the heat, and other workers were told to step over them," recalled Geraldine Blankinship, 92, who supported the Women's Auxiliary and Emergency Brigade when she was just 17.
"They didn't slow down the line, and they didn't stop it. They just dragged people away. It was such an inhumane thing to do," added Blankinship, whose father, Jay Green, was vice chair of the strike. She spent many nights working with her mother, Ida, a red-caped beret-wearing brigade member, who fought bravely to deter the company's actions.
Workers at GM's Fisher Plant in Flint, Mich., were tired of fearing not only for their safety, but also for job security, so they initiated a sit-down strike by locking themselves inside the plant for as long as it would take for the company to recognize their right to form a union and negotiate for higher pay and better working conditions. The Flint standoff inspired workers from other GM facilities to sit down in solidarity as well.
The future was unknown for these brave, defiant workers who feared losing their jobs, the threat of police intervention and even of their families abandoning them while they were locked inside.
"I was kind of afraid I'd have to go back to waitressing," said Pauline Polsgrove, 93, with a laugh. She's the last surviving female sit-down worker from 1936.
Richard Wiecorek, 95, recalled how "One guy, he had five kids and he'd get so nervous, he'd pass out. He didn't know if he was going to get his job back."
The workers' fortitude would be challenged when police arrived to force them out of the plant, but their spirit and strong community support was too strong to break their drive.
Eventually, something incredible happened to help bring the standoff closer to an end when then-Michigan Gov. Frank Murphy called in the National Guard -- to go to the plants and protect workers from police and corporate thugs.
The strike ended after 44 days on Feb. 11, 1937, when GM recognized the UAW and negotiated a first contract. Sit-downers walked out of the plant to find a parade with thousands of supporters.
James Todd, 98, who still teaches square dancing three times a week, was a janitor in 1936 before the strike. Todd is proud of the successes that came as a result of the sit-down movement.
"We all got better jobs ... and for black people, we got jobs that we didn't get before because most of the time, we were just sweeping floors. But after that, we all went on machines."
In today's climate, with workers facing corporate-lobbied politicians trying to eliminate collective bargaining rights, Wiecorek has some time-honored wisdom: "If you have a union, hang on to it."

We do not own this video. From December 1936 to February 1937 members of the United Auto Workers organized a sit-down strike inside the General Motors Fisher Body 1 and 2 plants in Flint, Michigan. They ultimately won recognition of their union and improved wages and conditions. "With Babies and Banners" tells the story of the Women's Emergency Brigade, composed of female GM workers and the wives of men involved in the sit-down strike, which not only provided support services (like running the union kitchens that provided food to the strikers occupying the plants) but did picket duty themselves. "With Babies and Banners" tells the story of the Women's Emergency Brigade, composed of female GM workers and the wives of men involved in the sit-down strike, which not only provided support services (like running the union kitchens that provided food to the strikers occupying the plants) but did picket duty themselves. It intercuts footage from 1937 with interviews with the same women 40 years later, still active in union politics and still pressuring the UAW to acknowledge women as equals. Following the Columbine High School massacre, Moore acquired a life membership to the National Rifle Association (NRA). Moore said that he initially intended to become the NRA's president and dismantle it, but he soon dismissed the plan as too difficult.[24][25] Observers such as Dave Kopel noted that there was no chance of that happening;[26] authors David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke wrote about how Moore failed to discover that the NRA selects a president not by membership vote but by a vote of the board of directors.[27]
In 2005 Time magazine named Moore one of the world's 100 most influential people.[28] Also in 2005, Moore founded the annual Traverse City Film Festival in Traverse City, Michigan. The closest an American sponsored film has ever come to a Soviet mass epic. To Touch A Child is a fascinating short film from 1962 created by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. Flint Michigan was a national leader and innovator in many ways even outside of the automobile industry, the school system being no exception. I grew up in Flint's East Side in the 70's & 80's and can tell you that a positive "can do" attitude permeated the city. I attended Williams Elementary School (built in 1968), which had an Olympic swimming pool with a retractable roof, hockey & ice skating rink, wood shop, tennis court, gymnasium, auditorium, nature preserve, park, football & baseball fields... There was always something to do at the school for anyone who wanted to attend, and I personally benefited from the programs instituted by the great philanthropists of Flint Names like Whaley, Sloan, Longway, Kearsley, Whiting, Mott and Manley among others. Flint has one of the most interesting history's of any city in the United States. While some outsiders today say the city is dead, the people who lived there and knew what a great city looked like long to see that great community system return. A system that has never existed since Flint.
The legacy Frank J. Manley and Charles S. Mott created by funding after school programs using existing Flint public school buildings was the first of its kind and adopted nation wide soon after. Anyone who ever attended an event after school can thank Frank J Manley, who came up with the idea, and Mott, who paid for it.
For those not from the Flint area, it might sound crazy, but you could get an almost free education in just about anything you could imagine. Technical, vocational, academic, or just plain recreational, you could sign up for classes that took place after school and better yourself. Today, you'd have to pay thousands for University quality classes at an "extended campus" program.
Directed by Herk Harvey, an industrial/educational film director, the film focuses on Cook School in Flint, Michigan. The film was instrumental in the spread of the community school idea throughout the nation.
The film begins with children playing in the street, down by the river, while vacant school buildings lie dormant (in the film the newly built Southwestern High School is shown along with Potter Elementary and 2 others).
At almost 50 years old, To Touch A Child is a dated film but a remarkable window into Flint culture and American culture at the time. There are hilarious references to the classic housewife dieting and cake decorating of the period. There are highly melodramatic elements and unnecessary camera movement. However the film, thankfully, isn't totally dismissible. And so very pertinent today as the United States struggles to raise its next generation of kids. The US should look at the history of Flint to see it's own future.

First the all male workers kiss their wives goodbye and leave for work, while a chorus sings about "the beginning of a perfect day". Then they work for a little while (but not long). This "typical work day" happens to be payday. The final sequence shows the workers going home, saying "hi" to their wives and kids, and going to bed, while a chorus sings about their "perfect" lives and how happy they are. The Chevrolet employees are supposed to be content with a steady job and enough money to feed the family; the megaprofits that G.M. executives made off these robotized legions of "neighborly workmen" are never addressed. This is an example of what a city can do, until GM abandoned us and the thugs started littering,... tagging,... letting their dogs bark all day,... calling their women bitches,... teaching their children how to twerk,... killing eachother,... and watching MTV and VH1 all day.
The date seems to be correct, but I do not know for certain. If anyone has anything from this event, any paperwork, newspaper, video, or memorabilia that we can use as proof of date, please let me know!
Once again, A Huge Thanks to my grandfather for taking his big camcorder every place he went. He gave us the great gift of history!

Observations by Nasa satellites over the past 33 years show that there has been a steady increase in leaves on plants and trees, which scientists think is because of the higher CO2 levels.
