Vincent Gardenia (January 7, 1920 – December 9, 1992) was an Italian American stage, film, and television actor.

Early life

Gardenia was born Vincenzo Scognamiglio in Naples, Italy, the son of Elisa and Gennaro Gardenia Scognamiglio. After emigrating to the United States at the age of 2, he lived most of his life in Brooklyn, New York. As a child, he performed in a family acting troupe in Italian-American neighborhoods in and around New York City.

Career

Gardenia began acting in the theater at age 28, and his off Broadway debut was in ''The Man with the Golden Arm'' in 1956. He described his role in the film ''Little Murders'' as a "turning point". He won Obie Awards in 1960 and 1969.

In 1972, he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his performance in ''The Prisoner of Second Avenue'' and in 1979 he was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in ''Ballroom''. In film, he was twice nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in ''Bang the Drum Slowly'' and ''Moonstruck''.

In television, Gardenia won the 1990 Emmy Award for his performance in ''Age-Old Friends'', with Hume Cronyn. Among his best remembered TV roles is his portrayal of Frank Lorenzo, Archie Bunker's neighbor on ''All in the Family'' (1973–74) and as J. Edgar Hoover in the miniseries ''Kennedy'' (1983).

Death

Gardenia died of a heart attack in Philadelphia in 1992. He is interred in Saint Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, New York. A section of 16th Avenue in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York, where he lived until his death, bears the secondary name of Vincent Gardenia Boulevard in his honor.

Betty Garrett (May 23, 1919 – February 12, 2011) was an American actress, comedienne, singer and dancer who originally performed on Broadway before being signed to a film contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. While there, she appeared in several musical films before returning to Broadway and making guest appearances on several television series.

Later, she became known for the roles she played in two prominent 1970s sitcoms: Archie Bunker's liberal neighbor Irene Lorenzo in ''All in the Family'' and landlady Edna Babish in ''Laverne & Shirley''.

In later years, Garrett appeared in television series such as ''Grey's Anatomy'', ''Boston Public'' and ''Becker'' as well as in several Broadway plays and revivals.

Early life

Garrett was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Shortly after her birth, her parents relocated to Seattle, Washington, where her mother, Octavia, managed the sheet music department in Sherman Clay, while her father, Curtis, worked as a traveling salesman. His alcoholism and inability to handle finances eventually led to their divorce, and Garrett and her mother lived in a series of residential hotels in order to curtail expenses.

When Garrett was eight years old, her mother married the fiancé she had jilted in order to marry Curtis. They settled in Regina, Saskatchewan, where her new stepfather worked in the meat packing industry. A year later her mother discovered her new husband was involved in a sexual relationship with his male assistant, and she and Betty returned to Seattle. After graduating from public grammar school, Garrett enrolled at the Annie Wright School in Tacoma, which she attended on a full scholarship. There was no drama department there, and she frequently organized musical productions and plays for special occasions. Following her senior year performance in ''Twelfth Night'', the bishop urged her to pursue a career on the stage. At the same time, her mother's friend arranged an interview with Martha Graham, who was in Seattle for a concert tour, and the dancer recommended her for a scholarship at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City.

Garrett and her mother arrived in Manhattan in the summer of 1936 and Garrett began classes in September. Her teachers included Graham and Anna Sokolow for dance, Sandy Meisner for drama, Lehman Engel for music, and Margaret Webster for the Shakespearean classics, and fellow students included Daniel Mann and Richard Conte. She felt she was destined to be a dramatic actress and shied away from playing comedic roles.

Early career

During the summer months, Garrett performed in the Borscht Belt, where she had the opportunity to work with Danny Kaye, Jerome Robbins, Carol Channing, Imogene Coca, and Jules Munshin, and she was encouraged to hone her singing and dancing skills. She joined Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre as an understudy in what was to be its last stage presentation, a poorly-reviewed and short-lived production of ''Danton's Death'' that gave her the opportunity to work with Joseph Cotten, Ruth Ford, Martin Gabel, and Arlene Francis. She performed with Martha Graham's dance company at Carnegie Hall and the Alvin Theatre, sang at the Village Vanguard, and appeared in satirical and political revues staged by the Brooklyn-based Flatbush Arts Theatre, which eventually changed its name to the American Youth Theatre and relocated to Manhattan. It was during this period she joined the Communist Party and began performing at fundraisers for progressive causes.

Broadway

Garrett made her Broadway debut in 1942 in the revue ''Of V We Sing'', which closed after 76 performances but led to her being cast in the Harold Rome revue ''Let Freedom Sing'' later that year. It closed after only eight performances, but producer Mike Todd saw it and signed her to understudy Ethel Merman and play a small role in the 1943 Cole Porter musical ''Something for the Boys''. Merman became ill during the run, allowing Garrett to play the lead for a week. During this time she was seen by producer Vinton Freedley, who cast her in ''Jackpot'', a Vernon Duke/Howard Dietz musical also starring Nanette Fabray and Allan Jones. The show closed quickly, and Garrett began touring the country with her nightclub act.

MGM

After ''Laffing Room Only'' another production Garrett appeared in on broadway closed there she traveled with the show as it played extended runs in Detroit and Chicago, after which she returned to New York and was cast in ''Call Me Mister'', which reunited her with Harold Rome, Lehman Engel, and Jules Munshin. She won critical acclaim and the Donaldson Award for her performance, which prompted Al Hirschfeld to caricature her in the ''New York Times''. It led to her being signed to a one-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer by Louis B. Mayer. Garrett arrived at the studio in January 1947 and made her film debut portraying nightclub performer Shoo Shoo O'Grady in ''Big City'', directed by Norman Taurog and co-starring George Murphy. Mayer renewed her contract and she appeared in the musicals ''Words and Music'', ''On the Town'', ''Take Me Out To The Ball Game'', and ''Neptune's Daughter'' in quick succession.

''The Jolson Story'' had been a huge hit in the United Kingdom, and Garrett and husband Larry Parks decided to capitalize on its popularity by appearing in at the London Palladium and then touring the UK with their nightclub act. Its success prompted them to return to the country three times, but the increasing popularity of television eventually led to the decline of music hall entertainment. Then Garrett was cast opposite Janet Leigh and Jack Lemmon in ''My Sister Eileen'', a 1955 musical remake of a 1942 film starring Rosalind Russell, when Judy Holliday dropped out of the project due to a contract dispute. The following year, she and Parks replaced Holliday and Sydney Chaplin in the Broadway production of ''Bells Are Ringing'' during their vacation from the show. Over the next two decades, she worked sporadically, appearing on Broadway in two short-lived plays (''Beg, Borrow or Steal'' with Parks and ''A Girl Could Get Lucky'' with Pat Hingle) and a musical adaptation of ''Spoon River Anthology'', and making guest appearances on ''The Dinah Shore Chevy Show'', ''The Lloyd Bridges Show'', and ''The Fugitive''.

Later career

In the fall of 1973, ''All in the Family'' added two new neighbors to the neighborhood, Frank Lorenzo and his feisty Irish American wife, Irene. Lear had been the publicity man for ''Call Me Mister'', ''All in the Family'' writers Bernard West and Mickey West knew Garrett from her days with the American Youth Theatre, and Jean Stapleton had been in the cast of ''Bells Are Ringing'', so Garrett appeared to be a frontrunner for the role of Irene. It went instead to Sada Thompson, but, unhappy after filming one episode, Thompson asked to be released from her commitment, freeing the role for Garrett. Irene was Catholic and assumed many of the household duties normally associated with husbands, and she therefore presented a kind of nemesis to Archie Bunker. She later worked with Archie at his place of employment, driving a forklift, and was paid less than the man she replaced. Garrett remained with the series from 1973 through 1975.

The following year, Garrett was performing her one-woman show ''Betty Garrett and Other Songs'' in Westwood when she was offered the role of landlady Edna Babish in ''Laverne & Shirley''. The character was a five-time divorcée who eventually married Laverne's father Frank. Although Garrett reportedly felt she was never given enough to do on the show, she appreciated the fact that her musical talents occasionally were incorporated into the plot, and she won a Golden Globe for her performance. When the series was extended beyond what had been intended to be its final season, Garrett was forced to drop out because she already had committed to performing with Sandy Dennis, Jack Gilford, Hope Lange, and Joyce Van Patten in ''The Supporting Cast'' on Broadway. The play closed after only eight performances, but returning to ''Laverne & Shirley'' was not an option, as the writers had explained Edna's disappearance by having her divorce Frank.

In the ensuing years, Garrett appeared on television in ''Murder, She Wrote'', ''The Golden Girls'', ''Harts of the West'', ''Union Square'', ''Boston Public'', ''Becker'' (for which she was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series), and ''Grey's Anatomy'', among others, and on stage in ''Plaza Suite'' (with Parks), ''And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little'', and the 2001 Broadway revival of ''Follies''. At Theatre West, which she co-founded, she directed Arthur Miller's ''The Price'' and appeared in the play ''Waiting in the Wings''. She won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award twice, for ''Spoon River Anthology'' and ''Betty Garrett and Other Songs''.

Garrett received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2003. On the occasion of her ninetieth birthday in 2009, she was honored at a celebration sponsored by Theatre West at the Music Box Theatre in Hollywood.

In 2010, Garrett appeared alongside former two-time co-star Esther Williams during Turner Classic Movies' first annual Classic Film Festival. Their film ''Neptune's Daughter'' was screened at the pool of the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California while a Williams-inspired synchronized swimming troop, The Aqualilies, performed.

Personal life

While appearing in Los Angeles, Garrett was invited to perform a comedy sketch at the Actor's Lab in Hollywood. It was there she met Larry Parks, who was producing the show. He invited her to join him for a drink, then drove her to the top of Mulholland Drive and told her, "You're the girl I'm going to marry." During the next two weeks, the two were inseparable. Garrett departed for a nightclub engagement in Chicago. Eventually Parks joined her and introduced her to his mother, who lived in nearby Joliet. Parks returned to Los Angeles to begin filming ''Counter-Attack'' and Garrett continued to New York to prepare for ''Laffing Room Only'' with Olsen and Johnson, but before rehearsals began she called Parks and proposed marriage. The two were wed on September 8, 1944, four months after their initial meeting. Actor Lloyd Bridges served as best man. Garrett and Parks spent a month honeymooning in Malibu Beach, and then lived apart for the next two years while pursuing their respective careers.

Garrett and Parks remained married until his death in 1975. She had two sons, composer Garrett and actor Andrew.

Blacklisting

Because of their past affiliations with the Communist Party, Garrett and Parks became embroiled with the House Un-American Activities Committee, although only Parks was forced to testify. He willingly admitted he had been a member of the party and initially refused to name others though did later. Despite this he found himself on the Hollywood blacklist. Garrett also had trouble finding work, although as the mother of two young sons she did not mind being unemployed as much as her husband did. Parks formed a highly successful construction business, and eventually the couple owned many apartment buildings scattered throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Rather than sell them upon completion, Parks decided to retain ownership and collect rents as a landlord, a decision that proved to be extremely profitable. During this period, the couple occasionally performed in Las Vegas showrooms, summer stock productions, and touring companies of Broadway shows.

Death

Betty Garrett died of an aortic aneurysm in Los Angeles on February 12, 2011, at the age of 91.

Evan Hunter (October 15, 1926 – July 6, 2005) was an American author and screenwriter. Born Salvatore Albert Lombino, he legally adopted the name Evan Hunter in 1952. While successful and well-known as Evan Hunter, he was even better known as Ed McBain, a name he used for most of his crime fiction, beginning in 1956.

Life

Hunter was born and raised as Salvatore Lombino in New York City, living in East Harlem until the age of 12, at which point his family moved to the Bronx. He attended Olinville Junior High School, then Evander Childs High School, before winning an Art Students League scholarship. Later, he was admitted as an art student at Cooper Union. Lombino served in the Navy in World War II, writing several short stories while serving aboard a destroyer in the Pacific. However, none of these stories were published until after he had established himself as an author in the 1950s.

After the war, Lombino returned to New York and attended Hunter College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, majoring in English and Psychology, with minors in dramatics and education. He published a weekly column in the Hunter College newspaper as "S.A. Lombino". In 1981, Hunter was inducted into the Hunter College Hall of Fame where he was honored for outstanding professional achievement.

While looking to start a career as a writer, Lombino took a variety of jobs, including 17 days as a teacher at Bronx Vocational High School in September 1950. This experience would later form the basis for his 1954 novel ''The Blackboard Jungle''.

In 1951, Lombino took a job as an Executive Editor for the Scott Meredith Literary Agency, working with authors such as Arthur C. Clarke, P.G. Wodehouse, Lester del Rey, Poul Anderson, and Richard S. Prather, among others. He made his first professional short-story sale that same year, a science-fiction tale entitled "Welcome Martians", credited to S.A. Lombino.

Hunter died of laryngeal cancer in 2005 at the age of 78 in Weston, Connecticut. He had three sons. His son Richard Hunter, is a harmonica virtuoso. Another child, Mark Hunter, is a professor at INSEAD and the Institut français de Presse, and an award-winning investigative reporter and author. His eldest son, Ted, a painter, died in 2006.

Name change and pen names

Soon after his initial sale, Lombino sold stories under the pen names "Evan Hunter" and "Hunt Collins". The name "Evan Hunter" is generally believed to have been derived from two schools he attended, Evander Childs High School and Hunter College, although the author himself would never confirm that. (He did confirm that the name "Hunt Collins" was derived from Hunter College.) Lombino legally changed his name to Evan Hunter in May 1952, after an editor told him that a novel he wrote would sell more copies if credited to "Evan Hunter" than it would if it were credited to "S.A. Lombino". Thereafter, he used the name Evan Hunter both personally and professionally.

As Evan Hunter, he gained fame with his 1954 novel ''The Blackboard Jungle'', which dealt with juvenile crime and the New York City public school system. In 1955, the book was made into a movie. During this era, Hunter also wrote a great deal of genre fiction. He was advised by his agents that publishing too much fiction under the Hunter byline, or publishing ''any'' crime fiction as Evan Hunter, might weaken his literary reputation. As a consequence, during the 1950s Hunter used the pseudonyms Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, and Richard Marsten for much of his crime fiction. A prolific author in several genres, Hunter also published approximately two dozen science fiction stories and four SF novels between 1951 and 1956 under the names S.A. Lombino, Evan Hunter, Richard Marsten, D.A. Addams and Ted Taine.

His most famous pseudonym, Ed McBain, debuted in 1956, with ''Cop Hater'', the first novel in the 87th Precinct crime series. NBC ran a police drama also called ''87th Precinct'' during the 1961–1962 season based on McBain's work. Hunter revealed that he was McBain in 1958, but continued to use the pseudonym for decades, notably for the 87th Precinct series, and the Matthew Hope detective series. He retired the pen names of Cannon, Marsten, Collins, Addams and Taine around 1960. From then on crime novels were generally attributed to McBain, and other sorts of fiction to Hunter. Reprints of crime-oriented stories and novels written in the 1950s previously attributed to other pseudonyms were re-issued under the McBain byline. Hunter stated that the division of names allowed readers to know what to expect: McBain novels had a consistent writing style, while Hunter novels were more varied.

Hunter wrote an unknown number of pornographic novels for William Hamling's publishing houses as Dean Hudson. Though Hunter denied writing any books as Hudson, several sources have come forward to contradict him. 93 novels were published under the Hudson name between 1961 and 1969. Though many if not most were written by Hunter, it was a common practice at the time for sleaze authors to allow their friends the use of their pseudonyms. No records were kept, and so it is impossible to do more than speculate which specific Hudson books are Hunter's work.

Under the Hunter name, novels steadily appeared throughout the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, including ''Come Winter'' (1973), and ''Lizzie'' (1984). Hunter was also successful as screenwriter for film and television. He penned the screenplay of the 1963 film ''The Birds'' for Alfred Hitchcock, loosely adapted from Daphne du Maurier's short story. He was set to adapt Winston Graham's novel ''Marnie'' for Hitchcock, but he and the director disagreed on a crucial scene, and Hunter was let go. Hunter's other screenplays included ''Strangers When We Meet'' (1960), based on his own 1958 novel; and ''Fuzz'' (1972), based on the 1968 "87th Precinct" novel of the same name, which he had written as Ed McBain.

From 1958 until his death, McBain's "87th Precinct" novels appeared at a rate of approximately one or two novels a year. From 1978 to 1998, they were joined by another McBain series about lawyer Matthew Hope; books in this series appeared every year or two. For about a decade, from 1984 to 1994, Hunter published no fiction under his own name.

In 2000, a novel called ''Candyland'' appeared that was credited to both Hunter ''and'' McBain. The two-part novel opened in Hunter's psychologically-based narrative voice before switching to McBain's customary police procedural style. Aside from McBain, Hunter used at least two other pseudonyms after 1960. The 1975 novel ''Doors'' was originally attributed to Ezra Hannon, before being reissued as a work by McBain, and the 1992 novel ''Scimitar'' was credited to John Abbott.

In addition to his many books, Hunter also gave advice to other authors in his article, "Dig in and get it done: no-nonsense advice from a prolific author (aka Ed McBain) on starting and finishing your novel". In it he advises authors to “find their voice for it is the most important thing in any novel.”

Warren Beatty ( ; born March 30, 1937) is an American actor, producer, screenwriter and director. He has received a total of fourteen Academy Award nominations, winning one for Best Director in 1982. He has also won four Golden Globe Awards including the Cecil B. DeMille Award. He is married to actress Annette Bening.

Early life and education

Beatty was born Henry Warren Beaty in Richmond, Virginia's Bellevue neighborhood. His mother, Kathlyn Corinne (née MacLean), was a Nova Scotia–born drama teacher, and his father, Ira Owens Beaty, was a professor of psychology, a public school administrator, and a real estate agent. Beatty's grandparents were also teachers. The family was Baptist. His father moved the family from Richmond to Norfolk, Virginia, and then to Arlington, Virginia, where he became a middle school principal. The family also lived in Waverly, Virginia, in the 1930s. Beatty's sister, three years his senior, is the multi-award winning actress and writer Shirley MacLaine.

Beatty was a star football player at Washington-Lee High School, in Arlington, Virginia. Encouraged to act by the success of his sister, who had recently established herself as a Hollywood star, he decided to work as a stagehand at the National Theater in Washington, D.C., during the summer prior to his senior year. This enabled him to establish contact with a few famous actors. Upon graduation from high school, he turned down 10 football scholarships to enroll in drama school.

He studied acting and directing at the Northwestern University school of drama. While at Northwestern, he appeared in the annual Dolphin show. He is a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He dropped out after his freshman year to enroll in the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting in New York City. By the age of twenty-two, Beatty had appeared in about forty Off Broadway productions. He garnered a best actor Tony Award nomination in 1960 for his performance in William Inge's drama ''A Loss of Roses''. It was to be his only appearance on the Broadway stage.

Military service

Under his original name of Henry W. Beaty, Warren Beatty enlisted in the California Air National Guard on February 11, 1960.

On January 1, 1961, Beatty was discharged from the Air National Guard due to physical disability. He was also simultaneously discharged from the United States Air Force Reserve. Since he served on inactive duty only, Beatty was not awarded any military decorations.

Career

1950s and 1960s

Beatty started his career making appearances in television series such as ''Studio One'' (1957), ''Playhouse 90'' (1959), and ''The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis'' (1959). He made his film debut under Elia Kazan's direction and opposite Natalie Wood in ''Splendor in the Grass'' (1961). The film was a box office success and Beatty was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Motion Picture Actor – Drama. Subsequently he appeared in several small films such as ''The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone'' (1961). Then, at age 30, he achieved critical acclaim and power as a producer and star of ''Bonnie and Clyde'' (1967), which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Beatty.

Warner Bros. had such little faith in ''Bonnie and Clyde'', they decided to give Beatty 40% of the gross box office receipts instead of a flat fee, expecting it to be a major flop. The film made $70 million within six years.

Because of his work on ''Bonnie and Clyde'' (1967), Beatty is generally regarded as the precursor of the New Hollywood generation, which included such filmmakers as Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Martin Scorsese.

After being outmaneuvered by Woody Allen and ultimately forced out of the production of ''What's New, Pussycat?'', a film in which he was originally cast as the star, and afraid of being typecast as a milquetoast leading man, Beatty produced and starred in ''Bonnie and Clyde'' as a means of controlling the projects he was involved with. He hired the untested writers Robert Benton and David Newman, as well as director Arthur Penn, and controlled every facet of production, including cast, script and final cut of the film, as he would throughout the rest of his career, be it as producer/director or only as producer. It should be noted that in ''Bugsy'' it was Beatty, the producer, who had final cut on the film, not Barry Levinson, the director.

''Bonnie and Clyde'' became a blockbuster and cultural touchstone for the youth culture of the era. The film, along with ''Easy Rider'', marked the beginning of the so-called “New Hollywood” era , where studios gave unprecedented freedom to filmmakers to pursue their own idiosyncratic vision.

1970s and 1980s

Beatty worked under legendary director Robert Altman in ''McCabe & Mrs. Miller'' (1971) and starred in ''The Parallax View'' (1974), ''Shampoo'' (1975), which Beatty co-wrote with Robert Towne. Beatty and Towne won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film. In 1978, Beatty directed, produced, wrote and starred in ''Heaven Can Wait'' (1978). The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The box office success of ''Shampoo'' and ''Heaven Can Wait'' allowed Beatty to handpick his next project. He used this power to make ''Reds'' (1981), an historical epic about the Communist journalist John Reed who observed the Russian October Revolution – a project Beatty had begun researching and filming for as far back as 1970.

After a six-year hiatus following ''Reds'', Beatty starred alongside Dustin Hoffman in 1987's big-budget film ''Ishtar''. It was critically panned and is regarded as one of the biggest box office bombs in film history. In 1989, he recorded the duet, "Now I'm Following You" with Madonna for her 1990 album, ''I'm Breathless''.

1990s and 2000s

In 1990, he bounced back when he produced, directed and starred (alongside his ''Ishtar'' co-star Hoffman) in the title role as the comic strip character Dick Tracy in the film of the same name. The film was one of the highest grossers of the year and also the highest-grossing film in Beatty's career to date.

In 1991, he starred as the real-life gangster Bugsy Siegel in the biopic ''Bugsy'' which was critically acclaimed and made almost fifty million dollars at the U.S. box-office. His next film, ''Love Affair'' (1994), failed to do well. In 1998 he wrote, produced, directed and starred in the political satire ''Bulworth'' which was critically appreciated and earned him another nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In 2001, he appeared in his last film to date, ''Town and Country'', which became the second-largest money loser of any movie ever made (after ''The Adventures of Pluto Nash'') based on contemporary dollars lost: it was made on a budget of approximately USD $90 million, but earned only $6.7 million domestically. Since then, Beatty has not acted in any films but has expressed interest in returning to cinema.

In 2006, Beatty was named Honorary Chairman of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, succeeding Marlon Brando. In 2007, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded Beatty the Cecil B. DeMille award, presented at the Golden Globe ceremony by Tom Hanks. Beatty was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2008.

Beatty is on the Board of Trustees at The Scripps Research Institute.

Beatty is one of the few people to receive Oscar nominations in the Best Picture, Actor, Director, and Screenplay categories for a single film. This feat is all the more impressive since Beatty achieved it twice: in 1978 for ''Heaven Can Wait'', where he won none of the awards; and again for ''Reds'' in 1981, where he won the directing award. His writing credits have often been in dispute, however. In Peter Biskind's biography of Beatty, ''Star'', several distinguished writers with whom Beatty has collaborated (e.g., Bo Goldman, Robert Towne, James Toback, Robert Benton, et al.) have claimed that Beatty often requested or demanded writing credit where little or none was due.

Beatty's overall Academy Award nominations number 14: he received Best Picture nominations for ''Bonnie and Clyde'', and ''Bugsy'', ''Reds'' and ''Heaven Can Wait'', received writing nominations for ''Shampoo'', Reds, ''Bulworth'' and ''Heaven Can Wait'', received Best Director nominations for ''Heaven Can Wait'' and ''Reds'', and has received Best Actor nominations for ''Bonnie and Clyde'', ''Heaven Can Wait'', ''Reds'' and ''Bugsy''.

Tribune lawsuit

In May 2005, Beatty sued Tribune Co. for $30 million in damages, claiming he still maintains the rights to ''Dick Tracy''. Beatty received the rights in 1985 and claimed that Tribune moved to reclaim them in violation of various notification procedures. There was talk of a sequel, and Beatty did express interest in reprising the part, but the sequel was sidelined by unexpected legal disputes. In March 2009, Tribune filed suit against Beatty, saying that Beatty had "made no productive use" of the rights for over a decade, causing them to revert back to Tribune.

Political work

A longtime activist in various liberal political causes, Beatty has, at various times, been extremely active in the presidential politics of the Democratic Party. In 1968, he hit the campaign trail for the first time, supporting Senator Robert F. Kennedy's bid for his party's presidential nomination. His involvement in the senator's campaign, which included stump speaking and fundraising, was cut short when Kennedy was shot and killed by Sirhan Sirhan on the same night that he won a crucial primary in California.

Four years later, Beatty joined the campaign of Senator George McGovern as an advisor. As part of the so-called "Malibu Mafia," a group of Hollywood celebrities who were part of the candidate's "inner circle," Beatty gave McGovern's campaign manager Gary Hart advice about the handling of public relations and was instrumental in organizing a series of rock concerts which raised over $1 million for the senator's campaign.

In 1984, and again in 1988, Beatty was to play a similar role in Hart's own presidential campaigns. Hart, who had, by that time, become a senator himself, had become friends with Beatty during the 1972 campaign and the relationship had grown closer during the intervening decade. After Hart's second campaign imploded over allegations that he had committed adultery with a former beauty queen named Donna Rice, a mutual friend of the two explained why they were so close: "Gary always wanted to have Warren's life and Warren always wanted to have Gary's. It was a match made in heaven."

Beatty seriously considered becoming a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination during the summer of 1999 . After it became clear that the only two contenders for the Democratic Party's nomination were to be Vice President Al Gore and former Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Beatty made it generally known that he was dissatisfied with the two choices and began to drop hints that he might be willing to seek the nomination himself. After meeting with several powerful liberal activists and influential Democratic operatives, including pollster Pat Caddell, who had worked previously for Hart, McGovern, California governor Jerry Brown and President Jimmy Carter, and adman Bill Hillsman, who had worked on the campaigns of Senator Paul Wellstone and Governor Jesse Ventura, Beatty announced in September 1999 that he would not seek the nomination. However, he continued to be courted by members of a different political party, the Reform Party, who were looking for an alternative to Pat Buchanan, a conservative who had switched parties after losing the Republican Party's presidential nomination for the third time in a row. Despite frequent entreaties by Governor Ventura, real-estate magnate Donald Trump, and syndicated columnist Arianna Huffington, Beatty refused to enter the race and Buchanan eventually won the Reform Party's nomination.

Despite his decision not to seek the presidency in 2000, Beatty intimated that he might still run at a later time, telling reporters that he would do so if he thought he "could make an impact on the debate". As California governor Gray Davis' popularity with California voters dropped, Beatty campaigned against the 2003 special election. He was the keynote speaker at the California Nurses Association's 2005 convention, and recorded radio ads urging voters to reject Governor Schwarzenegger's ballot proposals. The propositions were defeated at the ballot box, increasing speculation that Beatty might run against Schwarzenegger in the 2006 election. But, in early 2006, Beatty announced he would not seek the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Beatty's anticipated run for president in 2000 was lampooned by Gary Trudeau in his strip Doonesbury.

Personal life

Beatty has had romantic relationships with singers Madonna, Cher, Carly Simon, Michelle Phillips, actresses Natalie Wood, her sister Lana Wood, Julie Christie, Leslie Caron, Goldie Hawn, Joan Collins, Diane Keaton, Mary Tyler Moore, Isabelle Adjani, and supermodels Elle MacPherson and Stephanie Seymour.

After years of dating many famous women, he married Annette Bening on March 12, 1992, with whom he co-starred in the film ''Bugsy''. Beatty and Benning have four children together.

Jordan James (born 24 May 1980 in Gloucester, England) is a Wales international rugby league footballer.

Jordan James plays for the Crusaders in the Super League. During his time with the Crusaders, James has been loaned to South Wales Scorpions in the Championship One, an un-official feeder club for Crusaders.

His primary position is as a prop and he can also operate as a second-row forward.

James is a former Sheffield Eagles player who moved to Castleford Tigers where he was offered a full-time contract. He won the Supporters Club Player of the Year in 2004 while at Sheffield Eagles. James is also a Welsh international who played alongside Ian Watson in the Euro-Nations Cup. He then went on to play for the Swinton Lions in Rugby League National League 2 before, in 2006, he was bought by Wigan Warriors for an undisclosed fee.

Wigan Warriors coach Ian Millward bought Jordan James to try to help Wigan after several key players became injured during the 2006 Super League season. James had also had offers from Whitehaven but turned them down to join Wigan. Since joining Wigan James has played 4 games scoring 2 tries; one against St Helens and the other against Harlequins. Jordan James along with Oliver Wilkes were loaned out by Wigan to allow Wigan to sign prop forward Stuart Fielden. James is was on loan at National League 1 team Widnes Vikings until the end of the 2006 season. In July 2006 Wigan Warriors decided to release James from his contract at the club allowing him to sign for Widnes Vikings.

Jordan James was a revelation with Widnes, in 2007 scoring 6 tries in 23 games.

James joined the Crusaders for their first Super League season in 2009 and stayed on with the team through the 2010 season. During 2010, James played occasionally for South Wales on loan.

International honours

Jordan James won caps for Wales while at Sheffield, Castleford, Widnes, and Celtic Crusaders 2003…present 8(10, 12?)-caps + 5-caps (sub) 3-tries 12-points.

He was named in the Wales squad to face England at the Keepmoat Stadium prior to England's departure for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

He was named Wales' player of the year for 2009.

In 2010 he represented Wales again in the Alitalia European Cup.
