Liszt, 'Pace non trovo' (Petrarch Sonnet No.104) sung by Thomas Quasthoff
Liszt composed his settings of Francesco Petrarch's sonnets (numbers 104, 47 and 123) during 1838-39. Petrarch (1304-1374) was an early master of the Italian sonnet form, and the text of Sonnet No.104 roughly translates as follows: I have no peace, but dare not fight. I fear, I hope and burn and freeze: I fly above the sky and collapse to the Earth; I grasp nothing while I embrace the whole world. I'm in a prison, not open, not closed, neither a slave nor free to go. Love kills me not, nor releases me, nor lets me live, nor lightens my load. Without eyes I stare, without voice I cry: Wishing to die, yet seeking help, I hate myself and love others. I fulfill myself in grief and laugh in tears; I am balanced between life and death. Lady, what a state I'm in because of you. (Oh Laura, because of you!)

Liszt Petrarch Sonnet 47
Vaughan Recital May 2008, Faulkner Auditorium, Dartmouth College Translated text of Petrarch Sonnets (Dacre, Nott) Petrarch Sonnets and Life. Various (trans.) UK: London, Bohn, 1859. Sonnet XLVII Benedetto sial giorno el mese e lanno. He blesses all the circumstances of his passion. BLEST be the day, and blest the month, the year, The spring, the hour, the very moment blest, The lovely scene, the spot, where first oppressd I sunk, of two bright eyes the prisoner: And blest the first soft pang, to me most dear, Which thrilld my heart, when Love became its guest; And blest the bow, the shafts which pierced my breast, And even the wounds, which bosomd thence I bear. Blest too the strains which, pourd through glade and grove, Have made the woodlands echo with her name; The sighs, the tears, the languishment, the love: And blest those sonnets, sources of my fame; And blest that thought Oh! Never to remove! Which turns to her alone, from her alone which came.

Franz Liszt - Petrarch Sonnets No.123 &104 from Annees de Pelerinage II. Roll recording C.1912
Here are two pieces from Liszt's Italian album of the 'Annees de Pelerinage'. These settings of Petrarch's sonnets were originally for voice and piano, but as pieces for solo piano they are of equal quality, and define Liszt's poetic style of pianism. These rolls were recorded around 1912 by a young pupil of Busoni, Gottfried Galston (1879 - 1950) who previously had studied with Leschetizsky and Reinecke at Leipzig. He achieved his greatest fame during the 1900's during which time he recorded on piano rolls at the Hupfeld studios most of Liszt's Italian album, also other pieces which were connected in one way or another with Busoni. Galston went on to achieve a successful career in the US, settling in 1927 at the St. Louis institute of Music where he remained for the rest of his life.

Frederic Lamond (1868-1948): Liszt - Petrarch Sonnet 104
Frederic Lamond was another of Liszt's pupils from the 1880s. He was born in Glasgow, like his fellow student Eugen d'Albert. Unlike his fellow Liszt students who made records, Lamond made a speciality in the music of Beethoven (with an almost equal enthuisiam for Brahms), and recorded most of the piano sonatas. For around 50 years he was regarded as the greatest interpreter of Beethoven's piano music, and before Schnabel made his complete recording of the sonatas, Lamond's records were the benchmark. He did, however, also record the music of other composers, and laid down a good number of tracks by his teacher, Liszt. This is Liszt's grand piano work inspired by the 104th Sonnet by the Italian poet Petrarch.

Liszt - Petrarch Sonnet No.104
Pianist: David P. Lawrence, London, October, 2011 - This is me playing the 'Sonetto 104 del Petrarca' - No.V from the Second Year (''Italy'') of Liszt's 'Années de Pèlerinage' (Years of Pilgrimage). Liszt wrote these works whilst travelling with the Comtesse Marie d'Agoult, who had left her husband to be with him. On reaching Italy Liszt was drawn to the works of Dante and Petrarch. In this sonnet, Petrarch reflects on his love for the married and unattainable Laura, depicting his alternating moods of joyful ardour and agonised despair. Viewed on a larger canvas the sonnet is a metaphor for the struggle between Earth and Heaven, between the demands of the flesh and the spirit. The 26 year old Liszt, like St. Augustine and Petrarch before him, was similarly torn between the desire for earthly pleasures and the untainted realm of celestial bliss. Here is the translation (Nott) of Petrarch's Sonnet CIV:- Pace non trovo, e non ho da far guerra. (Loves Inconsistency) WARFARE I cannot wage, yet know not peace; I fear, I hope, I burn, I freeze again; Mount to the skies, then bow to earth my face; Grasp the whole world, yet nothing can obtain. His prisoner Love nor frees, nor will detain; In toils he holds me not, nor will release; He slays me not, nor yet will he unchain; Nor joy allows, nor lets my sorrow cease. Sightless I see my fair; though mute, I mourn; I scorn existence, and yet court its stay; Detest myself, and for another burn; By grief Im nurtured; and, though tearful ...

Liszt, Petrarch Sonnet No.104 played by Wilhelm Kempff
Liszt first transcribed his vocal setting of 'Pace non trovo' (Petrarch's Sonnet No. 104) for piano some time between 1839 and 1846. The second version appeared after 1846 and ended up in his second book of 'Années de pélerinage' which was completed by 1849. This was then revised still further in 1865 and this is the version heard here. Although no Liszt specialist, Wilhelm Kempff played a small body of the composer's piano music, recording all three Petrarch Sonnets in 1951.
