Imaginary Cities - "Ride This Out" (PopMatters Premiere)
Winnipeg's Imaginary Cities were birthed in a club auspiciously called the Cavern—recall the Beatles and their residency at Liverpool's Cavern Club—by Marti Sarbit and Rusty Matyas, who was formerly a member of the power pop band the Waking Eyes and is a current player with the Weakerthans. The duo's recent LP, Temporary Resident, has done well in their native land, reaching #1 on both !earshot and CHARTattack Canadian National Charts. Not bad for this promising group with a multi-talented instrumentalist in Matyas, who played all the instruments on the album, and Sarbit with her rousing, unique voice. Directed by Jeremy Fisher.

Bonjay - "Stumble" Video (PopMatters Premiere)
Always pushing their artistic experimentation to the max, the duo has created two versions of their new video for "Stumble" which is a perfect introduction to the world of Bonjay with its chopped up sirens, irresistible beat, and a voice from singer Alanna Stuart that is as commanding as it is seductive. Directed by Sammy Rawal, the videos feature two different women's interpretation to the same choreographed dance by Dana Michel who presents a fusion of contemporary and dancehall styles. Check out the "Stumble (Liana version)" video featuring Liana Lewis where it premiered on PopMatters today .

Thomas Giles - "Sleep Shake" Video (PopMatters Premiere)
When discussing Between the Buried and Me frontman Tommy Rogers, the topics most frequently discussed are his frenetic yet soulful keyboard skills, and the delightful contrast between his unearthly growls and gorgeous clean singing. However, not many people seem to realize just what an integral part of Between the Buried and Me's songwriting and composition he is. Rogers is out to blow perceptions away, though, with his new solo album Pulse, issued under his given first and middle name of Thomas Giles. Arranging, composing, producing, and performing the entire album on his own, this dynamic and intelligent musician delivers a powerhouse album of progressive and experimental rock, enlivened by elements of techno and electronic included in the mix. The first single from the album, "Sleep Shake", displays just how much effort went into Pulse, with shots of Rogers performing every single instrument and singing. With echoes of Trent Reznor permeating every second of his music, Thomas Giles Rogers is making his presence felt now more than ever before. -- Chris Colgan

The Music Playground Presents The Hot Sardines' "Bei Mir Bist du Schoen" Live on PopMatters
This month's installment of "The Music Playground Presents" features The Hot Sardines, a band that has gained a reputation for putting on unforgettably wild live shows all around New York City - and soon, the world. In fact, they have been invited to represent New York in front of 25000 people during a nighttime set at the 2012 Festival d'Île de France in Paris. The Hot Sardines' uniqueness lies in the fact that they get people both young and old dancing their asses off, by playing pop music that was written a century ago. Their concerts consist of all-out renditions of hot jazz numbers, New Orleans jazz standards, fever-paced tap dancing, and foot-stomping mayhem.

Anika - I Go to Sleep (PopMatters Premiere)
Berlin/London/Bristol-based Anika captures the fractured cultural decadence of the Weimar Republic and the musical wandering of the '80s post-punk era while miraculously sounding resolutely futuristic. It's quite the hat trick and her music has been beguiling critics and audiences alike in growing numbers over the past year. This live performance of "I Go to Sleep" beautifully illustrates that simultaneously historic and timeless aesthetic. Anika released her self-titled debut this past December via Stones Throw and had none other than Geoff Barrow of Portishead / Beak handling the production. She has a number of upcoming DJ gigs that will be happenings, so find your way to one of these listed below.

Living Days - "Let's Kiss" (PopMatters Premiere)
Brooklyn's new wave rockers Living Days wrapped up the music video for their lead single "Let's Kiss" off their debut record Make Out Room Part1 due out on Aug 24th . It's a lip-locking gem of a video for a song that is reminiscent of A-ha and Gary Numan. The story behind the video's vhs-aesthetic is that it mysteriously disappeared but luckily, according to vocalist Stephonik Youth, the band was able to buy a bootleg copy off the street for twenty quarters.

Eatliz - "Lose This Child" (PopMatters Premiere)
Tel Aviv's Eatliz play a classic brand of atmospheric indie rock that has fueled great popularity in their Israeli homeland, as their debut LP Violently Delicate was a popular fave in 2008 on radio there. That success translated to an invitation to 2008's Popkomm in Germany and a release of their album there as well as in Austria and Switzerland. Further exposure through MTV has moved the band up the ladder and, in 2011, they will be making their SXSW debut. Eatliz's sound encompasses a satifyingly broad range of influences such as Portishead, the Concretes, Mr. Bungle and Björk. The new animated video for "Lose This Child" was created by the team of Yuval & Merav Nathan, who directed the massive viral sensation (more than 16 million YouTube views!) that was Oren Lavie's "Her Morning Elegance". The brooding mood and simple imagery of animated turtles crawling across a deserted nighttime beach ideally suits the song's essential melancholy. Eatliz's upcoming album, Teasing Nature, will release this summer.

Official press release:
World's End Girlfriend is a Japanese composer whose work blends complex sound structures with beautiful melodies, reaching from electronic glitch to jazz-infused rock to modern classical. Captivating, enthralling and like nothing you’ve heard before, WEG makes for a surprising yet central addition to London contemporary music label Erased Tapes.
His brand new album ‘SEVEN IDIOTS’ will finally be released outside of Japan this April. Shifting seamlessly from catchy pop hooks to elaborate orchestrations and brutal IDM drones, it's an irregular pop album – filled with twists and turns that will have you reaching for the repeat button. At first recorded with vocals, he took the unusual composing method of building up the songs before erasing all of their vocal parts. By dismantling and re-constructing each track, WEG has produced a genre-defying album that truly transcends categorisation.
World's End Girlfriend hails from Nagasaki Kyushu, Japan and currently resides in Tokyo. Fascinated by his father's classical music collection, he began his foray into sound at the tender age of 10, creating his early compositions on keyboard, guitar, tape recorders and computers. To date he has composed more than 600 songs, for the most part unreleased testaments of his early experimentations.
WEG first came on Europe’s radar in 2002, invited to perform at Barcelona’s renowned Sonar Festival. On the back of the collaborative album ’Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain’ with Japanese post-rock band Mono, he embarked on extensive tours in Europe and North America in 2005, returning for an appearance at ATP Festival in 2008. Recently performing as a seven-piece ensemble, WEG's ostentious live show is currently selling out 800 capacity venues in Asia. Filmmakers seem smitten too, with the Go Shibata directed movie ‘Late Bloomer’ (2004) and the internationally renowned ‘Air Doll’ (2009) by award-winning director Hirokazu Koreeda both featuring soundtracks created by World’s End Girlfriend.
The music video for ‘Les Enfants du Paradis’, taken from ‘SEVEN IDIOTS', has already received over 90.000 views on YouTube. Directed by Yohei Saito, this beguiling visual represents the high level of interest given to WEG's music, not widely available outside of Asia – until now.

Mose Giganticus - "The Left Path" (PopMatters Premiere)
One-person groups are not uncommon in metal, but the majority of them play either atmospheric black metal or drone-doom. Philadelphia's Matt Garfield shirked that trend when he started Mose Giganticus in 1999 as a synthpunk outfit. The project only started gaining momentum in 2005, but it was worth the wait. Debut album The Invisible Hand the follow-up EP Commander! showed a lot of promise for Garfield, eventually leading to a contract with Relapse Records. The sophomore full-length album Gift Horse came out on July 20th, displaying a much heavier sound alongside intelligent, concept-based lyrics. Mose Giganticus (which includes touring members Kylewilliam Campol on guitar and Dan Eppihimer on drums) has the catchiness of Fu Manchu and Murder 1 combined with the heavy groove of The Sword and Seemless, with a dash of tasteful synth effects added to the mix. "The Left Path" shows off the band's style perfectly, while illustrating their memory of their roots playing basement shows and house parties. -- Chris Colgan

Kelli Scarr - "Break Up" Video (PopMatters Premiere)
This Berklee College of Music-trained singer-songwriter has had music in her bones from a very early age, showing a love of singing at the tender age of three whence upon she began recording her young vocalizations with a little hand-held tape recorder. That love never dimmed through the years and followed her through schooling at Berklee, stints opening for Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene after her move to Brooklyn, and work on a number of film soundtrack compositions. She got her big break when Moby took notice of her work and invited her to work with him on his 2009 album, Wait For Me. Now just this past year, Scarr has released her solo debut, Piece, a superb album that we lavished praise on back in November with an 8 rating. PopMatters' Matt James raved, "Piece is a beautiful record. A mesmerising, bewitching début. Amongst its ten tales, there's nary a dud in sight. It feels timeless, out of time, and could've been born in 2010 or 1910. It'll leave an ache in your heart, for sure. It's as sad as friendly faces frozen for eternity inside cracked picture frames or once cherished toys gathering dust in the attic. It's authentic Americana with a whole lotta soul. Scarr's is a smouldering smoky voice backed by vibrant, elegant playing and enough trinkets and sparkle to fill Aladdin's Cave. Like the best stories, Piece is one you'll want to hear over. Don't let it go unheard."
