The Sagamore is a Victorian era resort hotel located on Lake George in Bolton Landing, New York. The name Sagamore is taken from the title for the chief of a Native American tribe. The Sagamore of the Mohicans was a featured character in James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans, many scenes of which were set in the Lake George region. Several of Lake George's nearby islands also bear the names of characters from Cooper's book.

The resort occupies a private island (Green Island) on Lake George.

The main feature of The Sagamore is the historic hotel, which overlooks the lake. In addition, a number of more modern buildings have been constructed on the island containing hotel rooms and suites and condominiums, as well as a conference center.

History of the Sagamore[link]

The Sagamore opened in 1883, financed by a number of prominent summer residents. It succeeded in attracting a wealthy clientele.

Twice damaged by fire, in 1893 and 1914, The Sagamore was rebuilt in the early 1920's by local prominent architect Robert Rheinlander. It was then fully reconstructed in 1930 through the efforts of Dr. William G. Beckers of New York City, one of the hotel's early stockholders, and William H. Bixby, a St. Louis industrialist. Together they financed the cost in spite of the bleak economic climate of the period.

Throughout its history, The Sagamore has been a social center for wealthy tourists and residents of Millionaires Row, the stately mansions along Lake George's western shore.

The hotel eventually fell into disrepair before closing its doors in 1981^[2]. In 1983, one hundred years after construction of the first Sagamore, builder and real estate developer Norman Wolgin, of Philadelphia, purchased the hotel and restored it. The resort is currently managed by Delray Beach, Florida based company Ocean Properties, Ltd. The Sagamore is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In January 2009, the Sagamore announced that it would close for the winter months for the first time ever in its operation, due to the economic recession.

Dr. George Edward New (1894–1963) was an etcher and portrait artist whose work garnered him international prestige. He is best known for a portrait of General Billy Mitchell, made from World War I photographs.

Early years[link]

George New was born November 27, 1894, in a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania suburb. In his early years he traveled with family and attended a number of prep schools on the east coast. A fishing expedition to Wisconsin, with his father, fostered his love for the state which he would eventually call home. New served in World War One on the French side, he was awarded the French Croix de Guerre after sustaining numerous injuries. After the war he finished his education in France and then was involved in archaeological expeditions in North Africa, and Asia.^[1]

Milwaukee[link]

From 1936 until 1941 he was a sort of artist in residence and informal lecturer on the Mount Mary College campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, although he never had faculty status. He also lectured occasionally at Marquette University.Dr. New taught art and art appreciation at Mount Mary College and lectured on history of art and cultural anthropology at Marquette University.^[2] New was awarded an Honorary Degree from Mount Mary College in 1937 and a Pere Marquette award from Marquette in 1957.^[3]

Later life[link]

New suffered a paralytic stroke on December 26, 1956, from which he never fully recovered. In his later years New continued to etch, but not at the rate prior to his stroke. He died on February 14, 1963. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Racine, Wisconsin on February 20, 1963.

Artwork[link]

One of George New's most widely known etchings was a portrait of General Billy Mitchell. Other etchings were acquired by the Library of Congress in Washington DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and museums in Paris and London. He is responsible for a number of etchings featuring prominent buildings of Midwestern campuses including Northwestern University, Notre Dame University, the University of Chicago, Marquette University, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. New also painted a number of portraits; these included Federal Judge F. Ryan Duffy, Col. Phillp Westfahl, and the last Czar of Russia.^[4]

Due to his eccentric stories, some^[who?] have questioned if George New was his true name. In a number of letters after his death the possibility of a name change was raised. However, there is no actual evidence to confirm this.

Satoshi Tomiie 富家哲 (Tomīe Satoshi^?) is a Japanese house music producer and DJ. Since the late 1980s he has been at the forefront of the global house music movement thanks to his popular dancefloor anthems, pop remixes, and DJ sets.

History[link]

A lifelong student of jazz and classical piano, Satoshi had an influential impact from his very first record. His debut single ‘Tears’, which he co-produced in 1989 with Chicago’s ‘Godfather of house’ Frankie Knuckles, was an instant club hit and is today considered one of house music’s most important moments.

In the early 1990s, he toured and played keyboard for Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame). His reputation for crafting meticulous club rhythms led to him remixing some of pop’s biggest names including U2, Mariah Carey, Photek, Simply Red, and David Bowie.

At the turn of the millennium in a reinvention move typical of his DJ career, Satoshi introduced a groundbreaking new club sound via 2000’s ‘Full Lick’ album. The long-player featured dark twisted electronic rhythms, haunting vocals, and hypnotic grooves that came to set the benchmark for a new developing house scene. The album’s hit single ‘Love In Traffic’ became a worldwide underground hit.

Another source of house music renovation, Satoshi and Hector Romero’s record label SAW Recordings has continued to refine the Chicago and New York City house blueprint over the last 10 years. A fine supporter of new producers, SAW most recently has championed a new generation of European-based house talent including Audiofly, Doomwork, Mabaan Soul, Tuccillo, and Guti.

In 2012, after a two-year absence from music production, Tomiie returned with a new deeper, housier DJ sound, new singles, and remixes.
