"So in the end you can't even really regret your misfortunes," explains the beloved author Alice Walker, "because they led you somewhere." Walker speaks from experience. From growing up poor in the segregated south and losing part of her vision in a childhood accident to receiving threats from the Ku Klux Klan for her interracial marriage and work with the NAACP in 1960s Mississippi, Walker has experienced her share of hardships. But over the years she has channeled these experiences into groundbreaking fiction about the lives of blacks in America, becoming one of the most celebrated writers of her time. Through her continued dedication to writing and politics she remains a powerful example of what it means to lead a purposeful life. Open Road Media is proud to present this inspiring new video of Walker, whose work is now available for the first time in digital form. For more information, please visit www.openroadmedia.com

Authors@Google: Alice Walker
In October, 2010, Alice Walker joined Googlers in Mountain View for a day of conversation and readings from her latest book of poetry, Hard Times Require Furious Dancing. "[This] collection of new poems is written especially for the times we're living through. Alice Walker is known throughout the world as not only a great writer but an activist and a woman who shares the inner turmoil and outer struggles of her life. Readers admire her ability to bare her heart and soul, but to also speak out about the world as she sees it, often becoming a catalyst for change. As the title [Hard Times Require Furious Dancing] suggests, these poems were written during struggles and sadness and deal with the loss of siblings, the loss of a beloved dog, the estrangement in families, violence and struggles on the world stage, and the simple joy of life itself. The words dance, they sing, they heal our hearts and touch our souls." Excerpt from the Press Release from New World Library. "Democratic Womanism": Author Alice Walker on Women Rising, Obama, and the 2012 Election
DemocracyNow.org - With less than 40 days to go before the 2012 presidential election, poet and activist Alice Walker reads her new poem, "Democratic Womanism," and discusses her thoughts on President Obama's legacy, including his use of drone strikes. "You ask me why I smile when you tell me you intend in the coming national elections to hold your nose and vote for the lesser of two evils," reads Walker. "There are more than two evils out there, is one reason I smile." Alice Walker reads her letter to President-elect Barack Obama on Democracy Now!
Pulitzer-Winning Author Alice Walker on Obamas First White House Visit as President-Elect One day after Barack Obamas first visit to the White House as President-elect, we speak to the Pulitzer-winning novelist Alice Walker. In a recent open letter to Obama, Walker writes, Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about. AMY GOODMAN: You begin your letter by saying you have no idea, really, how profound this moment is for us. ALICE WALKER: Yes. AMY GOODMAN: Why dont you take it from there? ALICE WALKER: Do you want me to read it? AMY GOODMAN: Sure. ALICE WALKER: Oh, OK. Ill just read that part. It starts with: "Dear Brother President-elect, You have no idea, really, how profound this moment is for us. Us being the black people of the Southern United States. You think you know, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you delivering the torch so many others carried, only to be brought down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, is almost more than the heart can bear. And yet, this observation is not intended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, this is a different America. It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, through all the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of the spirit of Africa and the Americas. Knowing this, that you would ...

Trailer Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth
Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth is a feature documentary film which tells the compelling story of an extraordinary woman's journey from her birth in a paper-thin shack in cotton fields of Putnam County, Georgia to her recognition as a key writer of the 20th Century. Alice Walker made history as the first black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her groundbreaking novel, The Color Purple, which has been transformed from a novel, to a Hollywood movie and latterly to a successful Broadway musical. This universal story of triumph against all odds is not that different from Walker's own story. This film is a work in progress. Please support it's completion. Go to: www.indiegogo.com

Author Alice Walker On How Killing is Symptom of Unaddressed Racism
democracynow.org - Pulitzer Prize-winning author, poet and activist Alice Walker joins us talk about the death of Trayvon Martin. "It's a symptom of our illness," Walker says. "We are a very sick country, and our racism is a manifestation of our illness and the ways we don't delve into our own wrecks... As a country we have never looked to see where we went off the trail... [Trayvon Martin] was ours. And I don't just mean black people, but all of ours. These children are our future and they have to be protected." Towatch the complete daily, independent news hour, read the transcript and download the podcast, please visit www.democracynow.org. Alice Walker on "The Color Purple": Racism, Violence Against Women Are Global Issues
DemocracyNow.org - On the 30th anniversary of the publication of "The Color Purple," we speak with author, poet and activist Alice Walker about her groundbreaking novel and its enduring legacy. Set mainly in rural Georgia in the 1930s, the book tells the story of a young, poor African-American woman named Celie and her struggle for empowerment in a world marked by sexism, racism, and patriarchy. The novel earned Walker a Pulitzer Price in 1983, making her the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer for fiction. Walker explains the origin of the book's title and explores some of its central characters and their connection to her own family history. ALICE WALKER_FREEDOM RIDE
US BOAT TO GAZA "This is the Freedom Ride of this era" Fifty years ago, on May 4, 1961, the first bus of the Freedom Rides left Washington DC headed to New Orleans, with people committed to challenging segregation. The Freedom Rides were one of the sparks that contributed to a movement to dismantle a degrading system that violated human rights. In an interview with organizers from The US Boat to Gaza, Alice Walker, one of our nation's foremost contemporary writers and the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize, likened the planned Freedom Flotilla II to Gaza to the Freedom Rides by saying "this is the Freedom Ride of this era." In the US the racist system of segregation was challenged; in South Africa the racist system of apartheid was challenged; in Palestine the racist system of occupation and apartheid, enforced by the Israeli government and supported by the US government, is being challenged and will come to an end. The sixty people from the US on THE AUDACITY OF HOPE - our boat from the US - are sailing with the international Freedom Flotilla II to demand an end to the illegal Israeli naval blockade of Gaza. We are sailing to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice. And throughout this country thousands more are building support for this effort and getting on board this massive campaign. Take a moment to view this short video of Alice Walker, and check ustogaza.org to learn more about what you can do today to help ensure the ...
