The Wappinger were a confederacy of Native Americans whose territory in the 17th century spread along the eastern bank of the Hudson River. Primarily based in what is now Dutchess County, their territory was bordered by Manhattan Island to the south, the Mahican territory bounded by the Roeliff Jansen Kill to the north, and extended east into parts of Connecticut.Wappinger means "easterner" in most Algonquian languages.
The area was part of the Rombout Patent. In 1741, two Dutchmen, Nicholas and Adolphus Brewer, purchased 750 acres (300 ha) of land around the falls and built the first stone house in the village near the present Mill Street. In 1742, the Brewers built a mill on the east side of Wappinger Creek. Nicholas Brewer built the Mesier Homestead, which he sold in 1777 to Matthew VanBenschoten, who, in turn, sold it to Peter Mesier, a merchant from New York City.
Wappinger is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. It is in the Hudson Valley region, 70 miles (110 km) north of New York City, on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. The population was 27,048 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Wappinger Indians who inhabited the area.
The Wappinger were a confederacy of Native Americans whose territory, in the 17th century, was spread along the eastern shore of the Hudson River. Primarily based in what is now Dutchess County, their territory bordered Manhattan Island to the south, the Mahican territory bounded by the Roeliff Jansen Kill to the north, and extended east into parts of Connecticut.
They spoke an eastern-Algonkian language. Culturally they were closely related to the Lenape people (Delaware Indians) to the west and south of Wappinger lands, and also related to the Mahican people to their immediate north and to the Metoac peoples of Long Island. Wappinger means "easterner" in most Algonkian languages.

Prior to Anglo-Dutch settlement, what is today Dutchess County was a leading center for the native Wappinger peoples. They had their council-fire at what is now present-day Fishkill Hook, and also held gatherings along the Danskammer. On November 1, 1683, the Province of New York established its first twelve counties, with Dutchess County being one of them. Its boundaries at that time included the present Putnam County, and a small portion of the present Columbia County (the towns of Clermont and Germantown). The county was named for Mary of Modena, Duchess of York, second wife of James, Duke of York (later James II, King of England). Dutchess is an archaic form of the word duchess.

On December 13, 2007, the normal half hour driving way took me 5 hours to get home because of the heavy snow. It included 2 and half hours waiting in Downtown Poughkeepsie NY in the traffic jam and 1 hour on switching the rental car, because the left windshield wipe was broken after continuous using for 3 hours. This video filmed the weather on Route 9 of Wappingers Falls NY. The snow was so heavy that I can barely see the road.

Beautiful day exploring Tivoli, New York. Rick took Gayle and Connie on a history learning adventure! He took us to an old stone church and cemetery where we discovered the stone burial tomb that houses the family of Eleanor Roosevelt!! So very cool! This is also the spot where howls and growls have been recorded. A previous sasquatch sighting several years ago happened in this area also. And, on the side of a building on the grounds, there is a handprint of a sasquatch that hit the side of the building. This was about 8 to 9 feet high which occurred a couple months ago.
Took a little trip to see this two cascades falls totally 260 feet or 79 m in height. Pretty much making Kaaterskills one of the highest waterfalls in New York, and 1 of the Eastern United States' tallest waterfalls. Showing the beauty of this falls from a DJI Phantom 3A. I Truly highly recommend anyone to visit Kaaterskills waterfall in the Catskill Mountains, New York State.
