Sam Lanin's Ipana Troubadours - Pardon Me, Pretty Baby (1931)
Sam Lanin (Sept.4,1891 - May 5,1977) was an American jazz bandleader. The Ipana Troubado(u)rs was a musical variety radio program which began in New York on WEAF in 1923. In actuality, the Troubadors were the Sam Lanin Orchestra. They opened the show with their theme, "Smiles." The show was sponsored by Bristol Myers' Ipana Toothpaste, and it was during this period that Bristol Myers introduced the slogan, "Ipana for the Smile of Beauty; Sal Hepatica for the Smile of Health." With a mix of hot swing music and novelty tunes, the show moved from WEAF to the NBC Red Network (1926-28) for a 30-minute series on Wednesday evenings at 9pm. It then aired on the Blue Network (1929-31) Mondays at 8:30pm. Network radio exposure made the Ipana Troubadors one of the most well-known dance bands of the 1920s, resulting in a recording contract with Columbia and bookings at dance halls. The recording contract covered only the Ipana Troubadors and Sam Lanin continued to recording on other labels under his own name and with different pseudonyms. With title changes, the show continued on the Red Network (1933-34), Wednesdays at 9pm. Helen Hayes was a guest on the show of October 4, 1933, appearing in a scene with John Beal. In 1934, The Ipana Troubadors merged with Fred Allen's The Hour of Smiles. Radio station policies in the early 1920s dictated that no commercial messages intrude on a program. However, once the program moved to NBC, the attitude toward advertising accelerated, as noted by ...

Roaring 20s: Ipana Troubadours - My Strongest Weakness, 1927
The Ipana Troubadours was musical variety radio program which began in New York on WEAF in 1923. In actuality, the Troubadours were the Sam Lanin Orchestra, which recorded under several different pseudonyms (egThe Music Sheiks, Bailey's Lucky Seven, The Broadway Bellhops). With a mix of hot dance music and novelty tunes, the show moved from WEAF to the NBC Red Network (1926-28) for a 30-minute series on Wednesday evenings at 9pm. The show was sponsored by Bristol Myers' Ipana Toothpaste . Smith Ballew was in the 1920s one of the top crooners in the era before Bing Crosby. He worked with a number of bandleaders including Ted Weems, Hal Kemp, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. In 1929 he established the Smith Ballew Orchestra, and in the same year he signed his first recording contract. After the the Great Depression, when the public taste has dramatically changed and many hot dance music stars from the 1920s began to fade, He turned towards movie. He acted in many B class western movies, and therefore he was often called „the singing cowboy". In years 1936-50 he appeared in twenty four films, including "Under Arizona Skies" (1946) and "The Red Badge of Courage" (1951). Recording: Ipana Troubadors (Sam Lanin Orch.) - My Strongest Weakness (Is You), Columbia 1927

78s -The Sunrise - Scrappy Lambert & Gordon's Adelphia Whispering Orchestra
The band's first appearance on records was in 1928 with five recording sessions for Brunswick between January and September. The records were issued under the name of "Herb Gordon's Hotel Adelphia Whispering Orchestra. The Hotel Adelphia was located in Philadelphia. When the band returned to the Brunswick studios in May, 1929 it was billed as "Herb Gordon And His Hotel Ten Eyck Whispering Orchestra." The Hotel Ten Eyck was located in Albany, New York. After recording eight sides for Brunswick in 1929, the band was absent from the recording studios until 1933 when it recorded four sides for the American Record Corporation which were simultaneously issued on several of the company's dime store record labels. On these records the band is simply listed as "Herb Gordon And His Orchestra." Old newspaper radio listings indicate that the band was regularly featured on late evening broadcasts on the NBC Red Network in 1931 and 1932. The band also was featured in late evening broadcasts on CBS in 1938.

NBC News Decision 1980 Reagan Wins
NBC news projects at about 8:15 PM that Ronald Reagan is elected President. The early NBC projections sparked controversies inside and outside the media. A mayor protested that it "effectively ended the races even before the polls in her area are closed." A CBS commentator called it "small beer." ABC was caught under pressure and Walter Cronkite was forced to explain to viewers what was happening. Also, this was the first time that exit polls were used by a network as the sole basis for projecting a winner for a state. Later on, David Brinkley will call it a "suburban swimming pool," while others call it "Lake Reagan." And of course, NBC News team was more than happy to have that win as the earliest network to announce a winner at the time they are facing problems with Chancellor being defeated by Reynolds and Cronkite. Also, America saw three generations of NBC anchormen. David Brinkley of Huntley-Brinkley Report fame, his successor (and sometimes co-anchor) John Chancellor, and in turn Chancellor's successor Tom Brokaw (who was then announcing the Today show).
