9. The Nile Delta • Egypt
Wehave selected 100 unique places on Earth that are projected to undergo profound changes within the next few generations. We based our selection of the 100 places on the 4th Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Simply by drawing attention to the beauty of these places, 100 Places to Remember Before they Disappear creates an argument to preserve them. The 100 Places we have chosen to highlight, and the people who live in them, are in serious danger because of rising sea levels, rising temperatures and extreme weather events triggered by climate change. Among ambassadors are Joss Stone, Desmund Tutu for more info visit www.100places.com. The Gift of the Gods to the Egyptians For millennia, the Nile Delta has been providing food for the many cultures that inhabit Egypt. For more than a thousand years, traditional Arab boats, known as dhows, have transported agricultural produce from the fertile delta. The Nile, the longest river system in the world, originates from two sources, the White Nile rising from Lake Victoria at the Equator and the Blue Nile from Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands. The Nile has been the countrys lifeline from time immemorial and the Pharaohs believed it to be a gift from the Gods. After travelling more than 6500 km, the river passes the Egyptian capital, Cairo, then opens into the Nile Delta. Covering some 20000 square kilometres, the delta stretches along the Mediterranean coast from Alexandria in the west ...

Rising sea threatens Nile delta
For centuries, the Nile delta has been Egypt's bread-basket, a major source of sustenance for most of the country's 80 million people. But today the delta - located on Egypt's northern coast, where the Nile river meets the Mediterranean sea, is facing rising sea levels that are drying out swaths of farmland. Some are calling it an economic disaster that could eventually lead to widespread hunger in Egypt. Al Jazeera's Barnaby Phillips reports from the Nile Delta under growing threats. [March 21, 2010]

A day in the Nile Delta - Menoufya, Egypt
www.onefleetingglimpse.com A day in Saed Abu Shara, Menoufya, Egypt. I went along with a group of people going to see carpets being made by hand. None of us were prepared for what we saw when we arrived - the carpets being made by young children. Some looked no older than 7. They produce beautifly woven silk carpets with colorful patterns. It was amazing to watch them work. As we moved further into town, groups of children began to follow me when they saw the camera. I was led around the maze of narrow alley ways by a boy who took me to everyone who wanted his picture taken. When I got on the bus to leave, they stood peering into the windows of the bus and even ran behind waving as we pulled away.

UNDP: Saving the Nile Delta
The Lake Manzala Engineered Wetland Project investigated the suitability of using artificial wetlands as a low-cost alternative for treating sewage from cities, towns, and villages located on the fringes of the Nile Valley and Delta, where ample land is available. The following film is taken at the Engineered wetland site. It takes us on a virtual tour around the different facilities on site. Film is copyright and courtesy the United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Egypt.

Directed by: Francisco Soriano and Antoine Wagner Camera by: Cory Popp Label: Scion Audio/Visual With the video for Mobroder's "Rush (Nile Delta Remix)," directors Francisco Soriano and Antoine Wagner create a mission statement for the Italo disco soul group. The song itself is a muted devotional to sensual whispers and lush synths, and the accompanying video is equally luxurious. Still the clip manages to veer as stylistically close to the 1980s as possible without being ironic.

Nile delta
Created as a demo piece to illustrate some of the things that can be done with Pivot in combination with Movie Maker and Photo Story. It's a hodgepodge of short Pivot animations mainly created by Y8 students in one lesson. The animations use a series of backgrounds - downloaded stiill images, digital drawn images, chromakeyed pan-and-zoom clips and "visualisations". There are also examples of a custom created "Egyptian" stickfigure and shadow dancing. The music is from the rather wonderful Transglobal Underground

Gears of War 3 "Ashes to Ashes"
“Ashes to Ashes” picks up the Gears storyline in the days after The Hammer of Dawn has wiped out an entire city. Set to the haunting “Heron Blue” track by Sun Kil Moon, the trailer focuses on Dom as ash falls like snow, blanketing a street lined with the charred corpses of poor fellers caught in the nuclear attack. Scouting away from his squadron, Dom engages a small platoon of enemy soldiers before running directly into the blast’s ground zero. He's gravely injured and accepts death. The appearance of his Delta Squad spurs an epiphanic moment and he joins his brethren in the good fight. A massive tentacle monster rises from the ground and crab-like creatures surround the Delta Squad and together they fire at the enemy hoard until the spot closes with the title graphic “Brothers To The End.”

The Blackwater Gut ...Nile Delta.
Herodotus on the battle:. Herodotus tells us that, according to legend, Cambyses captured Pelusium by using a clever strategy. The Egyptians regarded certain animals, especially cats, as being sacred, and would not injure them on any ...account. Cambyses had his men carry the `sacred' animals in front of them to the attack. The Egyptians did not dare to shoot their arrows for fear of wounding the animals, and so Pelusium was stormed successfully. After the taking of the city Cambyses seized the opportunity to show his contempt of the Egyptians. He himself carried a cage of cats in front of him upon his horse, and hurled them with insulting taunts and laughter, into the faces of his foes.

Mawawil - Rural Songs of the Nile Delta
Musicians from the rural provinces of Egyptian Delta come together to form the group, Mawawil. The performers play a wide repertoire of the traditional music of the Egyptian countryside, performed and enjoyed over decades by the peasant population, as well as by emigrants from the countryside to urban centers. The music reflects the daily life of peasants though love songs, religious songs, poetic texts, and narrative ballads. The musicians of Mawawil play the rababa (a double-stringed spike fiddle made from half of a coconut shell covered with fish skin and a bow strung with horse hair), the kawala (an end-blown, oblique flute with six holes) and the arghoul (an ancient double clarinet characterized by two pipes of unequal length. The second pipe serves as a drone and can be lengthened by adding pieces. The player uses the technique of circular breathing to produce an uninterrupted sound. The arghoul can be traced back to Pharaonic times as it is exactly depicted on wall paintings of the temples of the third dynasty.
