World's Most Dangerous Roads - Nepal (2011) [BBC]
Nepal's Road 2011 Comedians Rhod Gilbert and Greg Davies attempt to drive through the mountainous, landlocked nation of Nepal. Starting from the chaotic border with India, they travel across the country's most important roads, from highways that maintain its cities to freshly-dug dirt tracks that connect to isolated communities. There are uplifting stories throughout, but it is a journey that is fraught with danger. Besides having one of the world's highest rates of road traffic accidents, floods and landslides are an everyday occurrence, blocking traffic for days on end and claiming dozens of lives every month. After days of swerving overloaded buses, dodging trucks and clinging to crumbling mountain roads, disaster strikes within sight of their final destination.

Nepal education plagued by corruption
Despite school enrolment figures rising, over half of the population in Nepal is still unable to read and write. In developing countries like Nepal, a good education comes at a price. But the name of this school means education for all. Uttam Sanjel once wanted to be a Bollywood actor. He now runs the largest network of private schools in Nepal. Classes are taught in English and the classrooms are made out of the cheapest thing he could find- bamboo. Each student pays 100 rupees, just over a dollar, to go to the bamboo school each month, about the same as a kilogram of vegetables here in Nepal. It has made private school accessible to poor kids. Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports from Nepal.

Fascination Nepal
At the foot of the huge peaks of the Himalayas is Pokhara and it is from here that we begin our journey through Nepal. In the past, Pokhara was an important trading link between India and Tibet but the trading of salt and wool came to an end after Tibet closed its doors to the outside world. Kathmandu is a melting pot of both race and religion, a metropolis in the heart of the Kingdom of Nepal, a country of snow-covered mountains inhabited by the gods. Kumari Chowk is the residence of the living goddess, Kumari, who is duly selected from childhood. She is not allowed to leave until puberty as her task is it affirm the king his power. Traditional ceremonies are celebrated throughout the year such as the Festival Of The Children that is a symbol of fertility and sexual purity. Patan is Nepal's second largest city and has retained much of its original character due to its three hundred monasteries and temples. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley and during the 15th century was the capital of one of three kingdoms. Bhaktapur is the third ancient regal city of the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley that has always been a prosperous trading route between China, Tibet and India. Through the golden gate of Sundhoka is the old royal palace complex. Located on a 1400 metre high hill, Swayanbunath is a Buddhist monastery complex and one of the most interesting sights in Nepal. The country's oldest stupa dates back to the 5th century and is entered from ...

Caste system in Nepal brought by Aryan Licchavis from northern India in 330 CE
VIDEO CREDIT: AL JAZEERA History of the caste system in Nepal. When did the caste system began in Nepal? 800 BCE - 330 CE: The Vishnu Purana, book 2, chapter 37, an ancient book mentioned that the chatur-varna or four class social system was absent among the Kiratas in Kiratdesa in the east and the Yavanas and Kambojas, etc. in the pashchima or west. The Kiratdesa has been identified to be Nepal and the surrounding Himalayas region. Yavanas are associated with Greek and Kambojas are Iranian, both whom are situated in paschima or west of India. This clearly shows that Kiratdesa(now Nepal) did not have the chatur-varna or four class social system that resulted in caste discrimination when Kirat was ruling Nepal. The chatur-varna (or caste system) entered Nepal with the arrival of Licchhavi from northern India in around 330 CE. The Licchavis introduced caste system and other vedic aryan culture in Nepal after defeating the Kirat. 14th century: By the turn of 1400 CE, the caste system have rooted deeply in Nepali society when the Indian Brahmin(Sankaracharya) from south India was appointed the head priest of Pashupathinath temple by the Malla King. The early Malla monarchs held absolute power by divine right. What this means is by Brahmins writing Malla King as the incarnation of Hindu God Vishnu inject fear into ordinary citizens and gave Malla King to rule over them as their God. King Jayasthiti Malla (1354-1395) also promulgated several laws and regulations (Manab Nyaya ...

Arms dealers in Nepal are taking advantage of the country's tumultuous political scene, with smugglers bringing weapons through the border with India. Some of the guns are reportedly going to local politicians. A pistol costs $350, while a rifle costs just $50. Subina Shrestha reports from Kathmandu.

Nepal adjusts to world's strictest drunk-driving laws
www.youtube.com/SupperWorldNews Nepal had rules on drunk-driving before but it was rarely enforced, and drinking was very common. Now, the country has some of the strictest rules in the world and party-goers are having a difficult time adjusting. If there is any alcohol in the blood, the fine is $12. But even those caught with a small amount of alcohol in their blood must sit through an hour-long lecture on the dangers of drunk-driving to get their licenses back. One Day on Earth - Motion Picture Trailer
To See to latest screening locationsplease visit: www.onedayonearth.org/movietickets
ONE DAY ON EARTH creates a picture of humanity by recording a 24-hour period throughout every country in the world. We explore a greater diversity of perspectives than ever seen before on screen. We follow characters and events that evolve throughout the day, interspersed with expansive global montages that explore the progression of life from birth, to death, to birth again. In the end, despite unprecedented challenges and tragedies throughout the world, we are reminded that every day we are alive there is hope and a choice to see a better future together.
Founded in 2008, ONE DAY ON EARTH set out to explore our planet’s identity and challenges in an attempt to answer the question: Who are we?
Please help us tell this story: 101010donate.org
Many thanks to the contributors of One Day on Earth, Vimeo, Ning, United Nations, and the 60+ non-profits for making this happen.

2010 The Animation Workshop
My Bachelorfilm from The Animation Workshop. Set to the song "Slow Show" by The National, who were kind enough to allow me to use their music. It is a non-commercial short film, intended for festivals.
It is shot in the forests surrounding Viborg, Denmark. My main inspiration was victorian litterature, and "Boxer" by the national. It was painful to finish, as shooting stop motion in the forest at night for longer periods turned out to offer alot of problems :) But it was also great fun and adventure.

So, we'll go no more a roving
So late into the night,
Though the heart be still as loving,
And the moon be still as bright.
For the sword outwears its sheath,
And the soul wears out the breast,
And the heart must pause to breathe,
And love itself have rest.
Though the night was made for loving,
And the day returns too soon,
Yet we'll go no more a roving
By the light of the moon.

Imagine
In the beginning of 2010 the Playing For Change crew began work on a new Song Around the World, John Lennon's "Imagine." It has been an amazing year of production, taking the crew from the favelas of Brazil to the shrines of southern India, from villages in Nepal to the glittering urban landscape of Tokyo and New York, and beyond.
This song is the Playing For Change Foundation's gift to the world. The Playing For Change Foundation feels honored to have the blessing and generous support of Yoko Ono as music lovers around the world join together to launch the Power to the People campaign. The campaign seeks to advance John Lennon’s vision of peace by engaging artists and audiences to contribute to music education programs worldwide. Proceeds raised will help build music schools, support teachers and music programs, purchase instruments, and connect schools for cross-cultural learning and conflict resolution across borders. Music IS the power: Power to the People.
To stay informed about the PFC Foundation, the schools we are building, the lives we are touching, and how you can participate, please join our mailing list at www.playingforchange.org, and participate in this global movement.

Maoists call for Bollywood ban in Nepal
A breakaway faction of the ruling the Communisty party in Nepal has called for a boycott of Indian films and banned cinema owners from screening them. They claim Bollywood films have dually negative impacts on Nepali culture and economy. The popular films, they say, show negative depictions of Nepali people and keep locals from patronising locally-created cinema. Al Jazeera's Subina Shrestha reports from Kathmandu.
