TOP 25 Post-Punk Songs
IN MY OPINION, these tracks can be listed amongst the top 25 songs post-punk has ever offered; but primarily this list aims at representativeness rather than completeness. I admit that there are many NOTABLE OMISSIONS. All comments are welcome. (In this video, you will see bands/artists like Joy Division, Bauhaus, Public Image Ltd., et al). RIP Ian Curtis DISCLAIMER: I do NOT own the songs and images in the video. The sole purpose is to honour the bands featured in it. If you do own any of the materials in the video, and do not agree with this kind of promotion, send me a message and I will remove the extracts you own.

Punk Britannia [Episode 3 of 3]
= Post-Punk 1978-1981 = Punk had shown what it was against - now what was it for? In the wake of the Pistols' demise a new generation of musicians would re-imagine the world they lived in through the music they made. Freed up by punk's DIY ethos, a kaleidoscope of musical influences broke three chord conformity. Public Image Limited allowed Johnny Rotten to become John Lydon the artist. In Manchester, Magazine would be first to record in the wake of the Pistols' split, Mark E Smith made street poetry while Ian Curtis turned punk's external rage into an existential drama. A raft of left-wing art school intellectuals like Gang of Four and Wire imbued post-punk with a sense of radical politics and conceptualism while the Pop Group infused funk with anti-capitalist sentiment in the early days of Thatcher. Flirting with fascism and violence, the working class Oi! movement tried to drag punk from the Kings Road into the heart of the East End whilst Anarcho punks Crass embarked on the most radical vision of any. In a time beset by dread and tension perhaps the biggest paranoia was Mutually Assured Destruction essayed perfectly by Young Marble Giants' Final Day. Released in the height of Thatcherism, Ghost Town by The Specials marked a parting of the post-punk waves. Some would remain avowedly uncommercial whilst others would explore pop as a new avenue in the new decade. The song that perhaps summed up post-punk's journey was Orange Juice's Rip It Up and Start Again. With John ...

JOY DIVISION-Transmission
Joy Division was an English rock band that formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. With their dark, cavernous sound and use of synthesizers and electronics, they pioneered the post-punk sound of the late 1970s and the early 1980s. The band dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of its lead singer, Ian Curtis. The remaining members reformed as New Order and went on to achieve much critical and commercial success.

Post-Punk Icon Joe Jackson on The Nanny State, Smoking Bans, & His Next Musical Adventure
"A smoking ban in bars is saying that adult citizens are not allowed to use a legal substance even though they're very highly taxed for doing so in a place that is private property," explains Joe Jackson, the hitmeister behind indelible tunes such as "Look Sharp!," "Is She Really Going Out With Him?," and, yes, "(Everything Gives You) Cancer." Jackson's not a smoker himself but he insists that smoking bans and other for-your-own-good restrictions infantalize us all and challenge basic concepts of freedom. "You're throwing out the window the property right of the owner of that establishment, freedom of choice, a lot of things, compared to a health risk [from second- and third-hand smoke] that is really unproven." Jackson's antipathy for the creeping nanny state in his native England and his longtime home of New York City led him to write a meticulously researched essay called "Smoking, Lies and The Nanny State." It also led him to finally flee New York and London, setting up residence in Berlin because there he at least feels like he is relatively "free" and "treated like an adult." Jackson sat down with Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie and talked about his frustrations as an anti-smoking ban activist, the "gathering storm of prohibitionism," and the bold and risky evolutions of his signature musical style over the years. Runs about 7.30 minutes. Shot by Meredith Bragg, Jim Epstein and Anthony L. Fisher. Edited by Anthony L. Fisher. Visit Reason.tv for downloadable versions, and ...

The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye // Trailer
Genesis Breyer P-Orridge has been a key figure of the underground music scene for over 30 years. A cult artist in prepunk and post-punk groups Throbbing Gristle (1975 to 1981) and Psychic TV (1981 to present), he is considered to be the father of industrial music and a pioneer of acid house and techno. Not content with breaking new ground in music, Genesis has also used his position at the limits of society to challenge the very fundamentals of biology.
Transformation is, indeed, central to his life. He became a she to resemble his beloved Lady Jaye, now deceased. With peroxide hair, full lips and gold teeth, Genesis does not go unnoticed. A unique life, modeled on his other, Lady Jaye, who remains an integral part of himself. Without subscribing to any movement but living life as the ultimate experiment, he has made his body a work of art.
A kaleidoscopic collection of moving surfaces, composed of interviews (Orlan, Peaches, Peter Christopherson), role plays, concerts and his day to day life, comes together to paint a multi-faceted profile of this pioneer of industrial music and in doing so, exposes the abundant yet inherently elusive nature of his creativity.

BLUE FILM
IT’S ALWAYS HARD TO REMAIN PART OF THE LIVING
YOU ALWAYS RETURN RIGHT WHERE IT’S AT
IT HAD BEEN SO MANY YEARS, I THOUGHT IT HAD GONE THE WAY OF THE TEARS
THERE IS NOTHING LEFT BUT A SACRED ALIBI
ONE DAY YOU TOOK IT FROM THE BLACK
A HIDDEN FILM BROUGHT FROM MY PAST
YOU WATCHED IT ALL ALONE BEFORE I KNEW
AND AFTER THAT YOU NEVER NEVER KNEW
WHO I WAS
THE BLUE FILM IT ROBBED YOU OF YOUR LUST
TO SEE ANOTHER WOMAN DEEP WITHIN MY TRUST
THE BLUE FILM ROBBED YOU OF YOUR LUST
TO SEE ANOTHER WOMAN DEEP WITHIN MY TRUST
WHEN I RETURNED YOU LOOKED AT ME
I KNEW IT WAS THE WORST
NOTHING WAS SAID BUT I HEARD IT WORD FOR WORD
WHEN I REALIZED
YOU’D FOUND THAT FILM FROM LONG AGO
AND I SAW YOUR EYES THEY LOOKED SO FORLORN
THE BLUE FILM IT ROBBED YOU OF YOUR LUST
TO SEE ANOTHER WOMAN DEEP WITHIN MY TRUST
YES THE BLUE FILM IT ROBBED YOU OF YOUR LUST
TO SEE YOUR LOVE WAS LOST
LONG BEFORE YOUR TRUST

back to the future…
dinky loop just weren’t made for these times. their music is of a better future or a golden past but somehow at odds with the present. to provide the perfect visual accompaniment to the dinkies musical catalogue, we are taking their music time travelling. our counter cultural revolution- codename: queens of disco sleaze- will travel back to before 1980, collect data, assemble it creatively with a loving, non-ironic spirit of the time and bring a fuller musical experience back to the future.
that’s the dream but, in truth, we don’t know where this project will take us. we don’t know if making videos as if we are back in the disco era- using only footage that existed up to that point- will help us get back in touch with the creative process after having become overly spoiled by amazing technological affects’ advances. we don’t know what we will learn from the idealism of past but we’re open and committed to seeing where the queens of disco sleaze project takes us and it can be viewed as it evolves, here on vimeo…

[optional reading for the thesis and probably best avoided :) ]
project guidelines:
no budget- this is an in-it-for-the-love only project.
no cameras or fancy editing software- making videos as if we are back in the disco era means we can only use footage and editing techniques that existed prior to 1980.
adopt vital creative attitudes of the era - post-punk three chords and the truth, disco grooviness and early hip-hop sampling techniques to make a moment from the past into something greater in the future.
find a way to express how creativity feeds off other creativity and how the future becomes the past and the past returns again in the future. normally this might involve cause-and-effect shots one after the other but we’ve found ourselves continually drawn to split-screen expression. wish we could rationalise this decision beyond saying it feels essential and right for this project to allow both to co-exist onscreen simultaneously, but we can’t.
consider each song and completed video as part of an entire series with its own visual identity in a way that factory records had an immediate identity through peter saville’s art direction. no band has ever had a complete visual identity through their music videos. a single thumbnail (with no words) should identify a queens of disco sleaze/dinky loop music video if the project works.
express the classic, but not in-your-face-modern, sexiness to dinky loop’s music through erotic visual parallels that can be found in the past. there’s often something exquisitely, undeniably sexy about the past- never remove the sexiness.
consider the alleged jean-luc godard quote: it’s not what you take, it’s where you take it.
never use poor footage of the past to make ourselves look good in the future. too much irony is a creative block. find great moments and potential stories within movies that had fatal flaws. find great people. find the forgotten heroes who could’ve been the next marilyn monroe but ended up with a one-way ticket to polookaville. and bring them back to the future to be remembered.
learn about filmmaking by trying to produce stories with old footage with the inventiveness of a silent filmmaker, instead of just mood pieces.
never use capitals and lower case letters. in the future no letter will ever look down on another letter… :)

LiLiPUT -EISIGER WIND (1981)
The women of early 80's PostPunk! (See also the video: "X-RAY SPEX -DAY THE WORLD TURNED DAY-GLO (1978)" ) The spirit of Punk was to try anything without restraint. As soon as it became a recognizable formula -as in Sid- the media rushed to pronounce it dead after two years. But in truth it had already mutated past them. Worldwide, a new attitude virused: challenge everything, try it from another angle, go to next. The word PostPunk is a loose term used to describe the eclectic electric that ensued from 1978 to around 1982. Punk wasn't supplanted, it was the planter of the seeds that grew into most cutting edge music made since. The holy trinity of 'Joy Division/Wire/Gang Of Four', bands from the dawn of the 80's, are the obvious blueprint for modern disciples like Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, She Wants Revenge, Radio 4, The Killers, and Elefant; the bounding deadpan-yet-funky pulse, the polyrhymic crack of drums, the sheets-of-noise guitar, and the wired automaton vocals. But PostPunk was more than that trio. It encompassed world musics and Dub, Punk-Funk, Death Disco, No Wave noise, Mutant Disco, proto-Industrial, Goth, HipHop hybrids, skronky jazz fusion and Harmolodics, and more. And most importantly, there were more women in this revolution than any time before in Rock history. The following women are the mothers of most rocker grrrls today. All of this music was too intense for the times and ignored, but now is the soundtrack of the current generation. Whether they ...
