"Stereo Love" is a 2009 song recorded by Romanian musician Edward Maya featuring Vika Jigulina, released as his debut single in late 2009 from his album ''The Stereo Love Show''. The refrain is from "Bayatılar", composed by Azerbaijani musician Eldar Mansurov. It became a worldwide hit in discothèques and rose to the top of Romanian, French, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, and Irish singles charts.

The song and the music video were both included on the compilation ''NRJ Music Awards 2010''. The music video was filmed in Greece, as Edward Maya stated in an interview that Greece "was a place that I fell in love with".

Copyright controversy

In the autumn of 2009 in Greece, Azerbaijani composer Eldar Mansurov contacted the Romanian Office for Copyright claiming the refrain of "Stereo Love" was a copy of a tune from his popular 1989 composition "Bayatılar". In the video clip, the composer of "Stereo Love" was indicated as "anonymous". Both the Office and Edward Maya later confirmed that Mansurov's work was in fact used in the making of "Stereo Love". Maya commented by saying he was "fascinated" by the accordion version of "Bayatılar" he had come across on the Internet earlier in 2009 and claimed he had tried to contact the author but failed due to his busy schedule. On 19 January 2010, Edward Maya arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he signed an agreement with Eldar Mansurov affirming their co-authorship of "Stereo Love".

Chart performance

On the issue date October 17, 2009, the song debuted at #12 on the French Digital Singles Chart. It became #1 on November 22, 2009, with more than 6,142 copies sold. It reached its highest weekly sales on January 3, 2010 with 9,763 sales. The song remained at #1 for a total of eight consecutive weeks. On the issue date November 22, 2009, "Stereo Love" debuted at #2 on the French Physical Singles Chart and became #1 on December 27, 2009. In Belgium, the single entered the Ultratop 40 at #40 on November 28, 2009 and reached a peak of #2 eleven weeks later. In the Netherlands, it was ranked for two weeks atop, eleven weeks in the top 10 and 17 weeks in the top 40. In Switzerland, the single debuted at #3 and peaked at #2. In the UK, the song entered the UK chart at #4 and fell quickly. In Ireland, the first week of release, the unofficial DJ Team version proved to be more popular (#8 in the IRMA singles chart) than Edward Maya's (#17); however, on May 21 the former dropped three places to #11 while the latter jumped eleven positions to #6 just before reaching a week later the top of the chart where it has been for four consecutive weeks.

Outside of Europe, "Stereo Love" enjoyed the most chart success in Canada, where it debuted at #93 on the Canadian Hot 100 on the issue dated February 13, 2010. The version released in Canada was featuring Mia Martina, instead of Vika Jigulina. Three weeks later, "Stereo Love" reached the top 40 and later peaked inside the top 10. Eventually, it was certified Platinum. It has also debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at #93 on the week ending October 23, 2010 and has since risen to #16. In 2011, it peaked at #11 on the Pop Airplay Chart. It has also topped the Billboard Dance/Club Play at #1, Billboard Digital Songs at #16, Billboard Airplay at #17, peaked at #35 on both the Billboard Latin Songs and Billboard Adult Pop songs, peaked at #13 on American Top 40, and peaked on the Billboard Ringtone Chart at #40. The song became very popular in cities like New York City where it reached number one in radio stations like Z100, WKTU and 92.3 Now.

In the United States, the single entered the ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Airplay chart at #23 in the April 17, 2010 issue. During its second week it slipped to #25, but in its fourth week saw a major move in the May 8, 2010 issue, moving from #25 to #8, the biggest jump ever on the chart, and ultimately reaching the #1 position three times in its June 5, June 26, and September 18, 2010 issues. The single was released through Ultra Records, the same label that also scored another top 10 US Dance Airplay hit in 2010 with another song by a Romanian artist, "Hot" by Inna, which also went all the way to number one, thus giving Ultra Records the distinction of having artists from the same country reach #1 in the same year with debut singles on the same chart. It would become the number one Dance Airplay single of 2010 in Billboard's Year End issue.

On the Italian FIMI chart the song peaked at #4 for two non-consecutive weeks in April 2010 and spent 17 weeks within the top 10. "Stereo Love" is the longest charting song in the history of European top Hot 100, accumulating 47 weeks.

The official "Stereo Love" music video received more than 135 million YouTube views for just one video. The location of video shooting is the island of Mykonos, in Greece.

Ultra Records hired Canadian artist Mia Martina to record an official remix of Maya's "Stereo Love". The rights to an official remix were acquired by Ultra Records from Romanian label Cat Music. As the writer and producer of the song Maya is paid royalties every time all of the remixes are played and sold of the song, including the official remix featuring Martina.

It was released to the United States on iTunes on August 10, 2010 and in the Canadian market in September 2010 from Martina's upcoming album ''Devotion''. It is released on Ultra Records/EMI. The music video was directed by Marc André Debruyne.

On January 7, 2011 Maya posted a statement expressing his disappointment with "the music industry" and the use of his name to promote Mia Martina's concerts, alleging that Martina's promoters were misleading audiences into believing that Maya would be present at Martina's concerts.

Maya does not know Martina personally and states that he does not "approve of her", though the actual meaning of this is unclear. A letter, addressed to CP Records, allegedly written by Maya's legal team, has described their opposition to the marketing of Martina's tour. The letter suggests that Martina has been promoting her performances as "cover performances" of Maya. Maya's legal team apparently disagrees that her performances qualify as "covers".

The original version by Maya and Vika Jigulina was already a Top 20 hit on Canadian Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #19 before it was outpeaked by the version promoted with Mia Martina, reaching #10.

Eduard Marian Ilie (born 29 June 1986 in Bucharest), better known as Edward Maya, is a Romanian musician, producer, performer, and composer. He graduated from George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest and is currently a final year student at the Bucharest Conservatory.

Career

In and around 2006, Maya worked with many Romanian artists (Akcent, Costi Ioniţă, Vika Jigulina,Cassa Loco, Studio One, Dj Rynno, Dj Sava, Marius Nedelcu, Blaxy Girls, Imba, Liviu Hodor). He worked also on the song Tornerò, which was performed by Mihai Trăistariu in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006. He added in an interview on Beat-Town.com that this song "was the beginning of my career"

In the summer of 2009, Maya launched his first song as an artist, "Stereo Love", reaching number 2 in the Romanian singles charts. Later that year, "Stereo Love", became a hit in clubs all over the world. While this success was followed by concerts worldwide, the song entered the top-5 singles charts in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK. "Stereo Love" received over 136 million YouTube views since August 2009, for just one video.

On May 13, 2010, Maya released his second single "This Is My Life". To help maintain control of his career and provide opportunities for other artists, Maya has formed his own record label, Mayavin Records.

Maya released the song and video for his third single "Desert Rain" on Christmas night worldwide. In an interview Edward Maya talked about his Desert Rain tour he mentions he'll start off with India and later he will be touring Europe, US, South Africa and Pakistan.

Vika Jigulina (born Victoria Corneva on February 18, 1986 in Cahul, Moldavian SSR) is a Romanian music producer, singer, and DJ. She was born in Moldova to a Russian father and a Romanian mother and graduated from the Rachmaninov School of Music. In 2000, she moved to Timişoara, Romania, where she still lives, and continued her studies there. She worked in various clubs in Timişoara and eventually Bucharest. She landed a weekly show on the Romanian station Radio Deea and later on with VIBE FM that gave her national exposure and fame. In 2010 she became a Romanian citizen.

Jigulina has made mixes with Steve Murrano, ATB, Tomcraft, DJ DOX, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and other Romanian artists. She is the vocalist in the international dance hit "Stereo Love" by Romanian producer and musician Edward Maya. She is also touring with Edward Maya in Canada in March 2011."Stereo Love" won the Billboard Music Awards 2011 for the Top Dance Song.

Alexander Perls is a musician and record producer. His notable projects include 009 Sound System, whose songs are entirely written, performed, and produced by Perls.

Perls' songs are known for their mix of electronic, trance and controversial religious related lyrics, which listeners have alternately interpreted as the work of a Christian, or a work of an atheist.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Perls is the grandson of Klaus Perls, the German art dealer, nephew of Nick Perls, the founder of Yazoo Recordings, and nephew of John Rousmaniere, the author, and great-grand-nephew of Albert Hamilton Gordon.

While studying as an exchange student at University College London in 1997, Perls worked with the post-rock collective Piano Magic. Following Perls' graduation from Oberlin College in 1998, he worked briefly for the Barbara Gladstone Gallery, a leading contemporary art dealership in New York, and then settled into a career as songwriter and music producer.

Between 2000 and 2008, Perls primarily wrote and recorded songs for other dance music producers, including well-known artists such as David Guetta, Paul van Dyk, Ian Carey, ATB, and Robert M. first in New York City, and after 2006, in Los Angeles. From 2000 to 2003 he was one of the members of the electronic music duo CIRC, which released one album and several singles and remixes.

In 2011, Track One Recordings opened a remix competition for Perls' well known productions Dreamscape and Born To Be Wasted.

Don Omar, also known as El Rey (born William Omar Landrón Rivera; February 10, 1978, is a Puerto Rican Reggaetón singer and actor.

Early life

William Omar Landrón Rivera is the oldest son of William Landrón and Luz Antonia Rivera. He was raised in Santurce, a barrio of San Juan, Puerto Rico, specifically in the Villa Palmeras area. From an early age, he showed interest in the music of Vico C and Brewley MC, but never actually followed it. During his youth, he became an active member of a Protestant church, Iglesia Evangélica Restauración en Cristo, in Bayamón where he occasionally offered sermons. However, after four years, he left the church to dedicate himself to singing.

Several months later, he had his first public presentation in a night club, accompanied by disc jockey Eliel Lind Osorio. Afterwards he appeared regularly on compilation albums from popular DJ's and producers like Luny Tunes, Noriega, and DJ Eric. He also started working as a backup singer for the duo Héctor & Tito. One of the members, Héctor Delgado, helped him produce his first solo album.

Career

2000–2005: The Last Don

Don Omar's career catapulted to stardom with the release of his first studio album, ''The Last Don''. Both the studio version and its live edition have been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Worldwide, ''The Last Don: Live [CD & DVD]'' has sold over one million copies, according to his official website. Omar's debut single, “Dale Don Dale”, sold over 500,000 copies in South America. He earned awards for “Latin Pop Album of the Year” and "New Artist & Latin Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year” by the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2003. ''The Last Don: Live [CD & DVD]'' was also nominated for "Urban Music Album" at the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards.

2006–2008: King of Kings

Omar's May 2006 album ''King of Kings'', became history's highest ranking reggaeton LP in the top 10 US charts, with its debut at #1 on the Latin sales charts and the #1 spot on the Billboard Latin Rhythm Radio Chart with his single “Angelito”. Omar was also able to beat the in-store appearance sales record at Disney World's Virgin music store previously set by pop star Britney Spears.

With the highest charting debut by a reggaeton artist, Don Omar's "King of Kings" entered at No. 7 with 74,000, beating Daddy Yankee's No. 24 entry with 2005's "Barrio Fino En Directo". In April 2007, Don Omar received the Latin Billboard award for "Reggaeton Album Of The Year" for King of Kings. The songs "Los Bandoleros" and "Conteo" were featured in the movie ''The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift'' in the ending credits.

On September 18, 2007, Landrón was briefly under police custody in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, when a local company sued him after he canceled a concert scheduled for earlier that year in La Paz, Bolivia as part of an international tour titled "Up Close". The organization claimed that he had stolen $70,000 due to the cancellation. Landrón responded that he canceled the concert because the company did not provide air tickets in time. After the case was presented before a local judge, both parts reached an agreement. Landrón was allowed to leave the country in order to comply with a previously scheduled appearance in Buenos Aires on Argentine television and returned the next day to hold his concert in Santa Cruz's Tahuichi Aguilera soccer stadium.

Landrón participated as in Gilberto Santa Rosa's presentation in an event titled "Concierto del Amor", presented in the Madison Square Garden on February 9, 2008. Where he closed the event and performed reggaeton themes.

In late 2009 Billboard recognized that this was the most successful album of the decade (since 2000) in Latin America, besides being the most successful in the history of the genre of Reggaeton and Latin music, Don Omar ended in 2009 devoting even more over its rivals as the best of this genre and urban music. It is estimated that the album until the end of 2009 according to Billboard recount has sold just over 4.1 million copies.

"Salió El Sol" is featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV.

2009: iDon

Don Omar's third studio album titled ''iDon'' was released on April 28, 2009. This album was dedicated to his cousin Cordell Brown. He misses his family in St.Louis, thats's why the first single from this album titled "Virtual Diva" was performed on MTV's Tr3s variety show, ''Virtual Diva''. ''iDon'''s Virtual Diva became the most requested song on Latin radio stations. The second official single, titled "Sexy Robotica", was released on June 5, 2009.

2010–present: Meet the Orphans

Don Omar confirmed the name of his upcoming collaborative album, titled ''Meet the Orphans''. The single "Hasta Abajo" was released in advance of the album. The album was set to be released on August 24, 2010 through Orfanato Music Group, but now is scheduled on October 19, 2010. He is currently signed to VI Music and Machete Music through Universal Music Latino.

Personal life

William Omar Landrón is the father of three children. He married forecaster/journalist Jackie Guerrido on April 18, 2008. Divorce rumors surrounded the couple two years into the marriage and were compounded by comments Landrón made via Twitter. In March 2011, it was revealed they had divorced. Landrón is banned from Univision, after Univision got involved with his marriage, he is no longer allowed to attend any award shows from Univision. Omar is also the owner of Orfanato Music Group.

On September 2004, Landrón and three companions were detained by police personnel in Puerto Rico. The jury was selected on July 8, 2008. Two days later, Judge Angel Ramírez Ramírez of the Tribunal de Carolina denied a prosecutor's request to extract a DNA sample from a marijuana cigarette, noting that if a previous test done in June brings back negative results the charges against Landrón may be dropped. The hearings had to be postponed on July 10, 2008, because one of the prosecution's witnesses was unable to attend due to pregnancy. The DNA tests were "inconclusive".
