General Douglas Lute Faces Tough Questions - VOA Story
Bush Iraq War Adviser Concerned About Iraq Government Capabilities. President Bush's nominee to be special adviser on Iraq and Afghanistan says he is concerned about the Iraqi government's capacity for political reconciliation. Lieutenant General Douglas Lute also told a Senate confirmation hearing that there have been mixed results so far from the US troop surge in Iraq. President Bush nominated General Lute to serve as deputy national security adviser on Iraq and Afghanistan to help coordinate war efforts across the government and improve implementation of the president's policies. At the general's Senate confirmation hearing, Armed Services Committee chairman, Democrat Carl Levin asked him about doubts he expressed before President Bush's January 10 speech announcing the troop surge. The general said it is still not clear to him the strategy will work. Lute also confirmed that he had expressed concerns that a military surge would likely have only temporary and localized effects unless there were greater efforts by the Iraqi government and non-military US agencies. He said two other concerns are how to eliminate the perception of the US military presence as an occupation, and how Iraqi security forces can avoid becoming overly dependent on US forces. Lute said political reconciliation is the only solution for Iraq, and he voiced concerns that Iraqi government leaders have the capacity to accomplish this. Asked if there should be consequences if Iraqi leaders don't meet ...

American Wars and Foreign Policy - Afghanistan and Pakistan
The still longer war in Afghanistan is ending, at an even bigger cost in blood and treasure. At the end of the day, will it have been worth it? And, as for Pakistan, is it friend or foe? Lt. Longy School of Music -- Shall I Strive (Dowland)
"Shall I strive with words to move" John Dowland (1563-1626 Performed by Longy School of Music, coached by Jane Hershey, Douglas Freundlich, Laurie Monahan Soloists: James Dargan, bariton; Douglas Freundlich, lute; Peter Geiersbach, viol. Performance from their program "Ayres of England & Arie di Roma" as part of Early Music America's Young Performers Festival June 15, 2011, 12:30 PM, First Church in Boston (Boston, MA). LYRICS: "Shall I strive with words to move" Shall I strive with words to move, When deeds receive not due regard? Shall I speak, and neither please, Nor be freely heard? Grief, alas, though all in vain, Her restless anguish must reveal: She alone my wound shall know, Though she will not heal. All woes have end, though awhile delay'd, Our patience proving. O that Time's strange effects Could but make, but make her loving. Storms calm at last, and why may not she Leave off her frowning? O sweet Love, help her hands My affection crowning. I woo'd her, I lov'd her, and none but her admire. O come, dear joy, And answer my desire.

LYRICS: "Clear or Cloudy" Clear or cloudy, sweet as April show'ring, Smooth or frowning, so is her face to me. Pleas'd or smiling, like mild May all flow'ring, When skies blue silk, and meadows carpets be, Her speeches notes of that nightbird that singeth, Who thought all sweet, yet jarring notes out ringeth. Her grace like June, when earth and trees be trimmed In best attire of complete beauty's height. Her love again like Summer's days bedimmed With little clouds of doubtful constant faith. Her trust, her doubt, like rain and heat in skies Gently thund'ring, she lightning to mine eyes. Sweet summer Spring, that breathed life and growing In weeds as into healing herbs and flow'rs, And sees of service divers sorts in sowing, Some haply seeming, and some being, yours, Rain on your herbs and flow'rs that truly serve, And let your weeds lack dew, and duly starve. Daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. dies
Hello on this Wednesday, the 16th day of May, 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s eldest child has died at the age of 51. Yolanda King passed away yesterday in Santa Monica, California. She was known for following her father's goal of racial harmony as an actress and motivational speaker. The family doesn't know the cause of death but relatives believe it may have been a heart problem. King's mother, Coretta Scott, died last year of complications from ovarian cancer following a stroke and mild heart attack. Nicolas Sarkozy is now officially the president of France. The center-right leader was sworn in in Paris earlier today at a ceremony. He replaces former president Jacques Chirac. Sarkozy and Chirac met privately Tuesday, and among the information exchanged were France's nuclear launch codes. The new president has departed for Berlin to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. There, he's expected to demonstrate his desire to shore up European unity. US President Bush has named a new war czar. US Army Lt. General Douglas Lute was picked to coordinate US efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pending Senate confirmation, Lute will oversee operations by the military and State Department. Sources reportedly say that he expressed concern about the effectiveness of the troop surge in Iraq announced in January. Reports say at least five retired four-star generals refused to be considered for the war czar job. Televangelist Jerry ...

Facebook: www.facebook.com

Spartacus battle scene
www.facebook.com www.ceepackaging.com twitter @ceepackaging www.facebook.com Spartacus is a 1960 American epic historical drama film directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on the novel of the same name by Howard Fast. The life story of the historical figure Spartacus and the events of the Third Servile War were adapted by Dalton Trumbo as a screenplay. The film stars Kirk Douglas as rebellious slave Spartacus and Laurence Olivier as his foe, the Roman general and politician Marcus Licinius Crassus. Co-starring are Peter Ustinov (who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as slave trader Lentulus Batiatus), John Gavin (as Julius Caesar), Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, John Ireland, Herbert Lom, Woody Strode, Tony Curtis, John Dall and Charles McGraw. The film won four Oscars in all. Historically it did not happen this way but it does give an impression of how battles may have been fought in Roman times. Nonetheless the director gives a very exciting introduction to the battle with the hint of despair and impending defeat for the slave army. The wonderful music track together with the scenic background adds to the effect. The development of Spartacus was partly instigated by Kirk Douglas's failure to win the title role in William Wyler's Ben-Hur. Douglas had worked with Wyler before on Detective Story, and was disappointed when Wyler chose Charlton Heston instead. Shortly after, Edward (Eddie) Lewis, a vice-president in Douglas's production company ...
