Pliny the Elder - Beer Review
BBA T-SHIRTS ARE FOR SALE: www.betterbeerauthority.com If you've been paying attention to the craft beer scene, then you've probably heard of Pliny the Elder. Beer nerds go crazy for this beer. Have you had the privilege of tasting it? Depending on where you live, it can be pretty hard to track down. Let me tell you, it's an imperial IPA worth looking for. But, do the other guys on the show agree with me? Tune in and find out whether the boys love it or hate it. Partial Transcript: "On Tap -- Pliny the Elder Hi. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are tasting Pliny the Elder from the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California. The brewery was founded in 1997 and specializes in aggressively hopped California style ales, Belgian style ales and barrel aged beers. The brewery is currently running at capacity and has no plans to expand. So those hard-to-find Russian River Brews are going to stay hard to find. Their website says "small is better. Pliny the Elder -- the beer - is a Double IPA with 8 percent alcohol by volume and 100 IBUs. Beer nerds go crazy for this beer and it won a Gold Medals at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beerfest. Pliny the Elder -- the human -- was a Roman Scholar and naturalist who had a role in creating the original botanical name for hops."

Russian River Pliny The Elder | Chad'z Beer Reviews #227
Season 8, episode 25. Originally aired 22 February 2010 BREWERY'S DESCRIPTION & INFORMATION: Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "Lupus salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, Humulus lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle's legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. 8.0%ABV, 1.071 OG HOW THIS BEER RATES: Rate Beer: 100 (overall) 100 (style) www.ratebeer.com Beer Advocate: A+ (users) A+ (bros) beeradvocate.com CHAD'Z BEER REVIEWS.COM www.chadzbeerreviews.com FACEBOOK http TWITTER www.twitter.com FOR DONATIONS, TRADES, OR A SPREADSHEET OF ALL MY REVIEWS, PLEASE CONTACT ME AT chad9976@yahoo.com READ MY TEXT REVIEW OF THIS BEER AT: www.epinions.com CHECK OUT MY ORIGINAL CHANNEL: youtube.com

#39 - Beer Blog 16 - (Pliny the Elder & PLINY THE SORBET)
It's ABOUT TIME I reviewed this beer. This is an Imperial IPA by Russian River Brewing. One of the best Imperial IPA's out there with very strong grapefruit notes. The recipe for PLINY THE SORBET.: PLINY THE SORBET 3/4 cup of water 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup grapefruit juice (approx. half a grapefruit, juiced) one bottle (1 pint) of Pliny the Elder (minus one sip for tasting) Open up the bottle of Pliny the Elder and let it decarbonate for at least 30 min. Meanwhile, put the water and sugar in a small sauce pan and put over medium high heat until the sugar has completely dissolved (approx. 3 min.). Chill it. Chill the grapefruit juice also. Once Pliny the Elder has decarbonated, mix all the ingredients together and keep very cold in the freezer until everything is ready. Mix in a ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's directions, approx. 30-35 min. The end result will be a very soft textured Italian ice. It must be further frozen overnight in the freezer to achieve the proper texture.

Beer Review: Russian River Pliny The Elder IPA
Russian River Brewing Company does not distribute it's beers in Georgia. That's been frustrating because I have wanted to try their beers, especially the Blind Pig IPA, Pliny The Elder IPA, and Pliny The Younger IPA. I had resigned myself to the idea that I would just have to wait until I took a trip out West in order to try them. But, last Thursday night I was keeping an eye on Twitter while watching the Giro D'Italia on my DVR I saw a "tweet" from a riding buddy of mine, Randy, saying he was enjoying the sunset in San Francisco while drinking some wine. WINE ! I thought, why isn't he drinking a great beer, like say Russian River? I immediately tweeted him back saying he needed to procure some Russian River Beers if at all possible, especially Blind Pig and Pliny The Elder. Randy's son Chris tweeted pretty much the same thing. That was all it took. Randy realized his error of drinking wine and instead set off to find some good craft beer. He ended up at a Whole Foods near his hotel and was able to get a couple of bottles that he brought back to Atlanta. SCORE!!! Twitter saves the day! So, for all you people who say Twitter has no meaning, I say Bull!!

Russian River Pliny The Elder - Snobby Beer Reviews
This is the Snobby Beer Review of Pliny the Elder made by Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California. According to many, this is THE beer, the legend, the myth. This is the beer that people compare IPAs and Imperial IPAs to. Does it live up to the hype? We will find out in this review! From Russian River's Website: "Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "Lupus salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Well, look who's back! I haven't had this beer in close to 2 years (because I havent been able to get it). A lot has changed since then, and I thankful to get not only one, but THREE bottles of Pliny The Elder from Sean in California in a trade. I decided to don my gray suit this time in honor of this very special beer. Will it be as good as I remembered? Pliny the Elder tasting - homebrewed clone and the real thing.
My clone of Russian River's awesome double IPA was ready to be compared to the real thing. The color of mine is darker. One unknown is I did not pull the ingredients myself, so if I truly got the ingredients that I requested, I would have thought it would be a touch lighter. However, there is .6 lbs of Medium Crystal and even that much will give it some darkness. The taste is not super similar, but generally similar in the sense that both are very bitter and yet balanced beers with good hop aroma. My hop aroma was probably slightly greater but there could be reasons for that (the bottle could be older than my clone, for one). And mine had a fuller mouthfeel, which sort of makes it more balanced overall. Both are good. Mine is a heck of a lot cheaper though! You can make it for less than $1/12 oz pour. www.donosborn.com
