Premiered in concert (at Lucerne in 2008) and on record by Patricia Kopatchinskaja, with whom the Turkish pianist forms one of todays most high-profile duos, the concerto refers to the famous collection of oriental stories. In the course of its four movements, situated at the interface between classical and oriental influences, 1001 Nights in the Harem creates a dreamlike atmosphere in which the virtuoso violin of Patricia Kopatchinskaja is joined in the scoring for full symphony orchestra by Turkish percussion instruments (kudüm, glockenspiel) as well as marimba, vibraphone, celesta, and harp. Patara, a quartet for soprano, piano, ney flute and percussion, was originally written as ballet music. It symbolises the rapprochement between East and West the piano represents western culture, the ney eastern culture, and the soprano the fusion of the two. The disc is completed by two of the most celebrated jazz arrangements by Fazil Say the pianist: Alla Turca Jazz, a fantasy on Mozarts famous rondo, and Summertime Fantasy, an arrangement of Gershwins melody. [Arthaus 101443] Fazil Say - Alla Turca Trailer #1
Fazil Say's international reputation continues to grown apace, and he has successfully made the step from child prodigy to highly successful international star. The film shows Fazil Say making music with Turkish pop icon Sertab Erener and interpreting Bach and Beethoven in Istanbul. It also presents excerpts from his compositions "Black Earth" and "Nazim" - the latter filmed during a performance in the amphitheater at Aspendos. (Arthaus 101443) www.naxos.com

KHD SYMPHONY IN RED
We also know how to work it the other way round. What looks like 3D-blood was filmed in real life. Out of consideration for the part-time vegetarians among us, we quickly abstained from the idea of making use of the resource „porc blood“. Instead, fish tanks of all sizes and red liquids in all consistencies were obtained and the toilet was turned into our experimental lab. Eager to compete with any science fair, we pipetted, poured, shook , whirled and messed around until the right colour followed the dance the director wanted it to. John Neumeier it was to be, no chainsaw massacre... With lyric fragility the real life sequences were choreograqhed to the virtous sounds of Fail Soy...
In our view, blood does not just flow: it performs pirouettes, arabèsques - par terre or dans l’air, chassé, frappé, glissé...And that is that. We will stop copying from the grand encyclopedia of ballet.
We take a bow and say thank you for the lion.

Fazil Say - Jazz Fantasy on Mozart
Now here's a REAL twist to Mozart's famous Rondo Alla Turca AKA Turkish March!! Also, this is my first video here at Northwestern University. :) College is great, and I really love it here. See, don't worry -- I haven't stopped making videos! :) I want to thank Paul Juhn for introducing me to this piece. It' so much fun to play!! Although I ended up having over 20 or 30 retakes because I kept messing up.... even in this video I kept messing up but it was the video with the least amount of mistakes. -_-; I gave up trying to perfect it -- sorry!! lol. I don't know when I'll have a new video out next.. but I'll definitely be working on one for you guys. :) My FB Fan Page: www.facebook.com ENJOY!
