Arthur Krams
Arthur Krams (born July 15, 1912 - died September 29, 1985) was an American set designer. He first made a name for himself working for MGM on films such as Holiday in Mexico, Easter Parade and The Student Prince in the mid 40s. Later, he went on to work with Paramount Pictures. While there, he shared an Oscar for The Rose Tattoo (1955). Over his career, Krams would be co-nominated for an Oscar seven more times.

Cedric Gibbons
Austin Cedric Gibbons (March 23, 1893 – July 26, 1960) was an Irish American art director and production designer who was one of the most important and influential in the field in the history of American film. He also made a great impact on motion picture theater architecture through the 1930s to 1950s, the period considered the golden-era of theater architecture. He is credited as the designer of the Oscar statuette in 1928.
Gibbons was born in Dublin, Ireland and studied at the Art Students League of New York and worked for his architect father. While at Edison Studios from 1915, he first designed a set for a film released in 1919, assisting Hugo Ballin. But, after this first foray, the studio closed, and he signed with Samuel Goldwyn in 1918. This evolved to working for Louis B. Mayer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1924 to 1956—a 32-year career.
Gibbons was one of the original 36 founding members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and oversaw the design of the Academy Awards statuette in 1928, a trophy for which he himself would be nominated 39 times, winning 11—second only to Walt Disney, who won 26.

Conrad A. Nervig
Conrad Albinus Nervig (born 24 June 1889, Grant County, South Dakota, USA, died 26 November 1980, San Diego, California, USA) was an American film editor with 81 film credits.
He started work in 1922 at Goldwyn Pictures, and stayed with this firm after its merger to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1924. He spent essentially his entire career at MGM, retiring in 1954.
Nervig was the first recipient of the Academy Award for Film Editing for the film Eskimo (1934). He won a second "Oscar" (shared with Ralph E. Winters) for the film King Solomon's Mines (1950). He was also nominated for his work on A Tale of Two Cities (1935).

Curtis Bernhardt
Curtis Bernhardt (15 April 1899 – 22 February 1981) was a German film director born in Worms, Germany, under the name Kurt Bernhardt. Some of his American films were called "woman's films" including the Joan Crawford film Possessed (1947). Bernhardt trained as an actor in Germany, and performed on the stage, before starting as a film director in 1926. Other films include A Stolen Life (1946) starring Bette Davis and Sirocco (1951) starring Humphrey Bogart.
Bernhardt made films in Germany from 1925 until 1933, when he was forced to flee the Nazi regime—who briefly had him arrested--because he was Jewish. Bernhardt directed films in France and England before moving on to Hollywood to work for Warner Brothers in 1940. Bernhardt produced and directed his last Hollywood picture, Kisses for My President (1964), about the nation's first female Chief Executive starring Polly Bergen and Fred MacMurray.

Edwin B. Willis
Edwin Booth Willis (28 January 1893 – 26 November 1963) was an award-winning motion picture set designer and decorator. Willis worked exclusively at MGM studios for his entire career. During his career as a set designer Willis worked on over 600 separate productions. The Internet Movie Database lists his 577 film credits as set decorator, 163 credits as interior decorator and 24 credits as art director. Edwin B. Willis was nominated for the Academy Award in his profession 32 times, in certain years receiving multiple nominations. Willis won the Oscar on eight occasions. He was born in Decatur, Illinois and died of cancer in Hollywood, in 1963. He was survived by his sister, Verna B. Willis, Film Editor for MGM Studios, (hired by Dorothy Asner) and niece, Ouida L. Burchfield, hat designer, and designer of Christmas decor sold nationally.

Franz Lehár
Franz Lehár (30 April 1870 – 24 October 1948) was an Austro-Hungarian composer. He is mainly known for his operettas of which the most successful and best known is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe).
Lehár was born in the northern part of Komárom, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now Komárno, Slovakia), the eldest son of an Austrian bandmaster in the Infantry Regiment No. 50 of the Austro-Hungarian Army and a Hungarian woman from a family of German descent. He grew up speaking only Hungarian until the age of 12. Later he put a diacritic above the "a" of his father's name "Lehar" to indicate the long vowel in Hungarian phonology.
While his younger brother Anton entered cadet school in Vienna to become a professional officer, Franz studied violin and composition at the Prague Conservatory, where his violin teacher was Antonín Bennewitz, but was advised by Antonín Dvořák to focus on composing music. After graduation in 1899 he joined his father's band in Vienna, as assistant bandmaster. In 1902 he became conductor at the historic Vienna Theater an der Wien, where his first opera Wiener Frauen was performed in November of that year.

Leo Stein (writer)
Leo Stein, born Leo Rosenstein (25 March 1861, Lemberg – 28 July 1921, Vienna, Austria) was a playwright and librettist of operettas in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including works adapted for a number of Broadway productions.
Stein wrote libretti for Johann Strauss I, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, and Oskar Nedbal. His collaboration with Viktor Léon contributed much to Lehár's success.
A selection of his works includes Wiener Blut (1899), Die lustige Witwe (1905), Der Graf von Luxemburg (1909) and Die Csárdásfürstin (1915).
Stein is buried at the Vienna Zentralfriedhof.

Marcel Dalio
Marcel Dalio (17 July 1900, Paris – 20 November 1983) was a French character actor. He had major roles in two of Jean Renoir's most famous films, Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game.
Dalio was born Israel Moshe Blauschild in Paris to Romanian-Jewish immigrant parents. He performed in cabarets, revues and stage plays in the 1920s and acted in French films in the 1930s. After divorcing his first wife, he married seventeen-year-old actress Madeleine LeBeau in 1938.
In June 1940, LeBeau and Dalio left Paris ahead of the invading German army and reached Lisbon. It took them two months to get visas to Chile. However, when their ship stopped in Mexico, they were stranded (along with around 200 other passengers) when the visas they had purchased turned out to be forgeries. Eventually they were able to get temporary Canadian passports and entered the United States. Dalio's parents would later die in Nazi concentration camps.
In Hollywood, Dalio was never able to rescale the heights of prominence that he had enjoyed in France. Dalio appeared in 19 movies in America during the Second World War, in stereotypical roles as Frenchman. In German-occupied France, the Nazis used his picture on posters as a representative of "a typical Jew".

Richard Haydn
Richard Haydn (10 March 1905 – 25 April 1985) was an English comic actor in radio, films and television.
Born George Richard Haydon in London, he was known for playing eccentric characters, such as Edwin Carp, Claud Curdle, Richard Rancyd and Stanley Stayle.[clarification needed] Much of his stage delivery was done in a deliberate over-nasalized and over-enunciated manner. He was possibly best noted in his performance as the voice of the Caterpillar in the 1951 Disney animated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Haydn was particularly memorable as the manservant Rogers in the 1945 adaptation of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None.
According to the DVD commentary of Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks said that Haydn used gardening and horticulture as a means of escape from the Hollywood grind and eschewed the Hollywood lifestyle.
Haydn died after a heart attack on 25 April 1985 in Los Angeles, California.
In The Twilight Zone episode "A Thing About Machines", he portrayed Mr. Bartlett Finchley, a quirky, self-absorbed, technophobe who is confronted by every machine in his home. On April 1, 1964, he reprised the Edwin Carp character, a poet and an expert on fish, in an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show which saluted several old-time radio performers.

Thomas Gomez
Thomas Gomez (July 10, 1905 – June 18, 1971) was an American actor.
Born Sabino Tomas Gomez in New York City, Gomez began his acting career in theater during the 1920s and was a student of the actor Walter Hampden. He made his first film Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror in 1942 and by the end of his career had appeared in sixty films.
He received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Ride the Pink Horse (1947). Directed by and starring Robert Montgomery, it was later used as the basis for an episode of the same name for the television series Robert Montgomery Presents in which Gomez reprised his role.
His other film roles include Who Done It? (1942), Key Largo (1948), Force of Evil (1948), The Conqueror (1956) and his final film Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). A frequent performer on television, Gomez also appeared in guest roles in such series as The Twilight Zone, Route 66, Dr. Kildare, Mr. Ed, Burke's Law, The Virginian, It Takes a Thief, Bewitched, The Rifleman, and Gunsmoke.

Una Merkel
Una Merkel (December 10, 1903 – January 2, 1986) was an American Tony Award-winning stage and film actress.
Una Merkel was born in Covington, Kentucky, and grew up in Philadelphia and New York City. She bore a resemblance to actress Lillian Gish and began her career as a stand-in for Gish, most notably in the 1928 classic The Wind, a late silent film. Merkel appeared in a few films during the silent era, including the two-reel Love's Old Sweet Song (1923) made by Lee DeForest in his Phonofilm sound-on-film process, and starring Louis Wolheim and Donald Gallaher. However, she spent most of her time in New York City working on Broadway.
Merkel returned to Hollywood and achieved her greatest success with the advent of "talkies". She played Ann Rutledge in the film Abraham Lincoln (1930) directed by D. W. Griffith. During the 1930s, Merkel became a popular second lead in a number of films, usually playing the wisecracking best friend of the heroine, supporting actresses such as Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard, Loretta Young, and Dorothy Lamour.

Victor Léon
Victor Léon, also Viktor Léon (born Victor Hirschfeld, Hungarian: Hirschfeld Viktor; 4 January 1858, Szenitz (Szenice), nearby Pozsony – 3 February 1940, Vienna) was a well-known Jewish Hungarian-Austrian librettist. He collaborated with Leo Stein to produce the libretto of Franz Lehár's romantic operetta The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe).
He was born Viktor Hirschfeld in Upper Hungary on 4 January 1858. He began a career as a journalist, and then branched out in the theatre under the pseudonym that was to become familiar - Viktor Léon. Between 1880 and 1884 he wrote one-act libretti for Vienna's Ronacher variety theatre, the Carl-Schultze Theatre in Hamburg, and the German Theatre in Pest, collaborating with composers such as Max von Weinzierl, Rudolf Raimann and Alfred Zamara. Then came a three-act collaboration with Zamara, Der Doppelgänger, produced at the Theater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich in September 1886.
He then wrote a libretto for Johann Strauss. Alas, Simplicius, a story of the Thirty Years War, produced at the Theater an der Wien on 17 December 1887, was scarcely a success, even after being revised twice. There followed a string of further creations with composers such as Zamara, Josef Hellmesberger, Alfons Czibulka, Rudolf Dellinger, and even Franz von Suppé (his last work, Das Modell), as well as German adaptations of foreign works that included Arthur Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard and Edward Jakobowski's Erminie.

She was unaware until recently that this footage still existed, but remembers well that they sang live for the cameras. Comic Opera Guild produced this popular show three times, combining a new book with the original Adrian Ross English lyrics. The 1984 performance stood out for the quality of its cast. Because affordable video technology was still primitive at this time, the show's images had a hazy quality. If, in watching, the viewer imagines seeing the show in a dream sequence, the performances will stand out amid the gossamer.
The widow (Joan Castrodale) has invited the entire Marsovian embassy staff to her villa in Paris for a party. Amid the entertainment, the widow sings a haunting ballad from the homeland, the haunting "Vilia, the Witch of the Wood). For more comic operas and operettas, visit comicoperaguild.org.

MERRY WIDOW—VILIA AND THE FOLK DANCE
Although Lehar wrote numerous operettas, nothing ever again in his career approached the level of his first work, The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe). Comic Opera Guild produced this popular show three times, combining a new book with the original Adrian Ross English lyrics. The 1984 performance stood out for the quality of its cast. Because affordable video technology was still primitive at this time, the show's images had a hazy quality. If, in watching, the viewer imagines seeing the show in a dream sequence, the performances will stand out amid the gossamer.
The widow (Joan Castrodale) has invited the entire Marsovian embassy staff to her villa in Paris for a party. Amid the entertainment, the widow sings a haunting ballad from the homeland, the haunting "Vilia, the Witch of the Wood). For more comic operas and operettas, visit comicoperaguild.org.

The Merry Widow is a 1952 film adaptation of the operetta of the same name by Franz Lehár. It starred Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas.
The film received two Academy Award nominations: for Best Art Direction - Set Decoration, Color (Cedric Gibbons, Paul Groesse, Edwin B. Willis, Arthur Krams) and Best Costume Design, Color. [1]

Synopsis[link]
The young widow Crystal Radek is invited to Marshovia, a small European kingdom, to attend the unveiling of a statue in honour of her deceased husband. The royal coffers are seriously in need of her money so the king sends out count Danilo to seduce her.
