6.5.08. violin vs. viola: the basics
*Please subscribe to see more videos like this* My good friend Alex was in town this week from New York City, and I thought it would be fun if we made a quick video that covered the basic differences between the viola and the violin. Although the violin is a beautiful instrument, you just can't the kind of robust tone from a violin that you would from a viola. I hope to get a viola for myself one day! Also, I'll have an video update on my album recording next week. Stay tuned. :)

Lady GaGa: Poker Face - VIOLA TRIO COVER (split screen)
This video is featured in a commercial promoting the 52nd Grammy Awards on CBS ... also seen here: www.youtube.com Lady GaGa : Poker Face - VIOLA TRIO COVER (split screen) * "HQ" --- Make sure you watch in "High Quality" This is the 11th video in my continuing series of classicalized popular music. The song was requested by so many people its hard to point the finger at any one. The original video of the song may be seen here: www.youtube.com This performance is the 6th of my split screen videos where I play with myself, and the 2nd where I play a trio with myself. It's all about the viola this time, just like Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.6, a concerto for strings, yet it features no violin parts. I steal my ideas from the masters of course. To do this video, I listened to the original song and by ear wrote out a sheet music score, then arranged it as a trio for 3 violas, and then performed it. I recorded each part separately. I was able to sync up and mix the 3 parts on my computer with a sound wave editor. To do the split screen, I used AviSynth (scripting based video editing and effects utility) in combination with VirtualDubMod (a free video editing utility) to sync up and render the two videos into a single split screen video. The sound then had to be synced to the 3 videos playing simultaneously and properly mixed. My AviSynth script for this video: viola1 = crop(AVISource("N:\PokerFace\VIOLA_1.avi"),256,0,-60,0) viola2 = crop(AVISource("N:\PokerFace\VIOLA_2.avi ...

Firework; viola cover
Yar, so I'm not dead guys. :) So again, if you have sharp ears yeah, there are more parts than the video shows... I just get carried away sometimes lol and it's like, hey let's add this, and this, and this, after I finished with all the video stuff. (maybe I should legit plan next time or smthg, idk). Anyway, thanks a bunch for watching! oh, and I know I make weird faces randomly. Dun hate ... :D NOTA BENE: guys, I don't have the notes and/or sheet music; sorry! I do still encourage you all to just play around with the song though - it's great practice. That being said, I do recall that this song is in Aflat major. Keep in mind that B, E, A, D will all be flat.

Scan Processor Studies (excerpts pt.1)
The SCAN PROCESSOR STUDIES are a collection of works by Woody Vasulka & Brian O'Reilly.
The full work is of total approximate duration of 45 minutes, with sections of various lengths, textures, and dynamic qualities.
The project first started while Woody and I were working on different commissioned projects at the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe Germany). He and Steina on the exhibition MINDFRAMES and Garth Knox and myself on the DVD and performance SPECTRAL STRANDS: FOR VIOLA AND VISUALS. Woody, Steina, Garth and I spent many nights screening works for moving images, playing music, and cooking, enveloped in the huge ghost town mood the ZKM's kitchen took on at night. During this time there were passionate discussions about video synthesizers (mainly my love for the Sandin Image Processor), and how Steina's VIOLIN POWER had a huge influence on Garth's and my new series of works.
The source materials were generated by Woody using a Rutt-Etra Scan Processor in the 1970's and sat on a shelf for years, having been recently digitized. Woody came into my studio one day and asked me if I would be interested in using them to work on a collaboration, and the project began from there...
The works use sources excavated directly from the output of the Scan Processor, as well as further manipulations using Tom Demeyer's ImX software, developed with input from Steina. Extensive editing and layering and additional augmentations were done using Phil Mortons IP. The Sound was generated (mostly) by custom software developed by Chandrasekhar Ramakrishnan and myself called NETHER GENERATOR, which sets up a number of complex real time feedback networks filtered and processed by various means.
SCAN PROCESSOR STUDIES was first exhibited as an installation in the ZKM's MINDFRAMES exhibition.
The source materials from Woody's original experiments with the Scan Processor have also been used in conjunction with further processing on my part to create the base materials for other works, including a three screen version of Woody's piece GRAZING and the work LEVEL & DEGREE OF DARK.

II - ninguém será obrigado a fazer ou deixar de fazer alguma coisa senão em virtude de lei;

Few weeks ago I visited a luthier looking for instruments parts, I had an idea in mind for an instrument I wanted to build. My curiosity was to hear the sound of violin, viola and cello strings amplified through the body of a double bass. I came up with a quadruple-neck experimental "something" that I thought to call Experibass.
To play it I used cello and double bass bows, a little device I built with fishing line and hose clamps, a paintbrush, a fork, spoons, a kick drum pedal and a drum stick. I hope you'll like it!
Thanks to luthier John Wu for providing me the parts, even though I warned him that I was probably going to create a "monster" : )

Igor Stravinsky - Elegy for Solo Viola (1944)
Igor Stravinsky, Elegy for solo viola (1944) Played flawlessly by Miles Hoffman. (His channel is MilesHoffmanViola) This short 5-minute work remains to be Stravinsky's only contribution to viola literature. It has been said that world renowned violist William Primrose once proposed commissioning a viola concerto from Stravinsky, but Stravinsky was not interested in the project, so he went to Bartok instead who did agree to the offer. The Elegy was commissioned by Germain Prevost to honor the memory of Alphonse Onnou (1893-1940). Prevost, who was an extremely sentimental man, not only commissioned Stravinsky for this work, but also his friend Darius Milhaud, who wrote three works for viola and piano in memory of Onnou as well. Undoubtedly in the war torn year of 1944, in which this work was composed, there were many victims worthy of this somber token of remembrance. Thank you for 45000 views!
