Gidget (1959) Part 1/10
The original Gidget film, starring Sandra Dee, James Darren, and Cliff Robertson, about a teenage girl who falls in love with surfing against the inclinations of her friends and the reservations of the all-male surf crowd. Based on the books by Frederick Kohner, in turn based on the life of his daughter KathyKohner. Though it led to the saturation of the film industry with beach movies in the 1960's, the movie still stands out because of its innocence and beautiful scenery. The theme song is also catchy.

Gidget 1959
a short scene from the 1959 movie "Gidget". The movie had a role in showing surfing to a mainstream public opening the way for surf music and beach and surf culture inspired by what was going on in Hawaii, California and later on also Australia. The original Gidget was created by Frederick Kohner in his 1957 novel Gidget, The Little Girl With Big Ideas, written in the first person and based on the accounts of his daughter Kathy (now Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman) of the surf culture of Malibu Point. Kohner, a Czechoslovakian Jew, worked in the German film industry as a screenwriter until 1933 when he emigrated to Hollywood after the Nazis started removing Jewish credits from films. Over the coming decades Kohner and his wife Franzie raised their two daughters by the beach while he toiled as a screenwriter for Columbia Pictures. As his children grew into American teenagers he noticed that his daughter Kathy in particular was drawn into a very specific, regional, contemporary slice of American teenage culture the surf culture. Surfing was a then minor youth movement that built its foundation around a sport, love of the beach, and jargon that must have proved a challenge to an Eastern European immigrant. The details fascinated Kohner, who was empathetic with his daughter's feminist intention to participate in a "boys-only" sport. A book was conceived and Kathy became her father's muse as he delved into the surfing world with his daughter as his guide. Over a six week period Kohner ...

American Idol - 1959 Gidget
Way back in 1959, just turning 14 was a big thing. Changing from a little kid to a teenage was playing all kinds of thinking as to what was life all about. Teens have always tried to figure out the passage from being a kid to being a "maturing person"... The film GIDGET with James Darren and Sandra Dee was one of those must see movies to help you along the path... trying to figure where you stood between your family life and the life you would soon be living. Hope you enjoy this short remembrance. The song has been one that I just never could get out of my head... so I tried to recreate it (without stepping on James Darren's toes).... I'm hoping even he'd enjoy this look back.

Most Sexy Spy Girl Ever
Forget the Bond girls. Yvonne Craig in "One Spy Too Many" was the sex bomb of 1966. As a young teenager, Yvonne showed such promise as a dancer that she was accepted to Denham's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Her training progressed until she left the company in 1957 over a disagreement on casting changes. She moved to Los Angeles hoping to continue her dancing, but was soon cast in movies. At first, Yvonne had small parts in pictures such as 'Gidget (1959)' and 'The Gene Krupa Story (1959)'. After that, her film career just bumped along. As Yvonne was dating Elvis at the time, she did have a supporting role in the two Elvis pictures 'It Happened at the World's Fair (1963)' and 'Kissin' Cousins (1963)'. But her fame would come with the cult Television series "Batman (1966)" in which she played Commissioner Gordon's daughter, Barbara. Her secret identity was Batgirl and as the Commissioner's daughter, she had access to all the calls of trouble that was taking place in Gotham. Her character, Batgirl, was part of the 67-68 season, which was the end of the run for the show. After "Batman (1966)", she also appeared on other television programs such as "Star Trek (1966)" and "The Six Million Dollar Man (1974)". As her career wound down, Yvonne went into the real estate business.

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use. Just a little tribute to four fellas I would have loved to have dated, but I was born too late! James Darren, Fabian, Michael Callan and John Saxon were talented performers who made more than their share of females swoon in the 50s and 60s. All four are still going strong and have lost none of their charm and talent. I fell in love with James Darren in "Gidget" (1959), Fabian in "Ride The Wild Surf" (1964), Michael Callan in "Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961), and John Saxon through "Portrait In Black" (1960) and later in "A Nightmare On Elm Street" (1984) and "Black Christmas" (1974). Darren and Callan appeared together in "Because They're Young" and "Gidget Goes Hawaiian", and Fabian and Saxon appeared together in "Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation" (1962). The song is of course by the Poni-Tails. Clips from: Gidget (1959) Because They're Young (1960, trailer) What's My Line? (television series) Ride The Wild Surf (1964) Mysterious Island (1961) Cat Ballou (1965) Cry Tough (1959) Posse From Hell (1961) Color photo of Michael Callan by permission of boomers-fifties-pinups.com Enjoy!

Summer's Gone
Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for fair use for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use. This video is a sentimental look back at the film "Gidget" (1959), one of the movies that made Sandra Dee a pop culture icon and that made James Darren a pin-up for teenage girls. While Paul Anka's song is bittersweet, and the film has a happy ending and spawned several sequels and two television series, I think the tune is also retrospective of the "good old days". I hope you agree!

CLIFF ROBERTSON : A TRIBUTE RIP
Oscar Winning actor Cliff Robertson has passed away, this is a scene from Brian De palma's 1976 film "Obsession" , other film roles included Robertson playing a future President of the United States in PT 109 (chosen personally by John F. Kennedy to portray the then-Lt. Kennedy) and a presidential candidate in The Best Man (1964). Later came Charly (an adaptation of Flowers for Algernon for which he won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Actor). Other films included Picnic (1955), Autumn Leaves (1956), Gidget (1959), Sunday in New York (1963), Devil's Brigade (1968), Too Late the Hero (1970), JW Coop (1972), Three Days of the Condor (1975),, Star 80 (1983) and Malone (1987). Late in his life Robertson's career had a resurgence. He appeared as Uncle Ben Parker in the first movie adaptation of Spider-Man (2002), as well as in the sequels Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). He commented on his website that "Since Spider-Man 1 and 2, I seem to have a whole new generation of fans. That in itself is a fine residual."[14] He was also in the horror film Riding the Bullet (2004). Robertson's television appearances included The Twilight Zone episodes "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim" (1961) and "The Dummy" (1962) followed by guest starring roles in such series as the NBC medical drama about psychiatry The Eleventh Hour (1963) in the role of Jeff Dillon, "The Man Who Came Home Late". In 1958, he portrayed Joe Clay in the very first broadcast of Playhouse 90's Days of Wine and ...
