Lauren Anne "Laurie" Forman is a fictional character on the Fox sitcom That '70s Show. She was originally portrayed by Lisa Robin Kelly and later by Christina Moore.

Laurie is Eric Forman's manipulative and popular older sister, who initially lives away from home, attending college. Eric's father, Red Forman, spoils her and favors her over Eric. Eric and his friends make fun of her for her promiscuous behavior.

Laurie, who has Farrah Fawcett-style wavy blonde hair, is a young woman often seen with different men, from her college psychology professor^[1] to Eric's friend Michael Kelso, who cheated on his girlfriend Jackie Burkhart. She is an object of sexual fantasy for Fez, whom she marries later in the series so that he can get a green card.^[2] Eric, Steven Hyde, and Donna Pinciotti often mock her promiscuity, and Eric several times refers to her as "the devil".^[3] In reference to this running gag, Laurie was born with a tail. Jackie hates her and usually refers to her as "a slut", at one point getting into a cat fight with her over Kelso. A bullying tattletale around Eric and sweet with her parents, she often gives her mother Kitty cause for concern, such as when Laurie tries to seduce the local youth minister, Pastor Dave (Kevin McDonald). Despite her disagreeable personality to Eric, she has occasionally showed sympathy toward him, such as when he was traumatized after seeing their parents having sex.^[4]

Laurie's parents express belief that she will accidentally become pregnant. Kitty's reason for telling people about Fez and Laurie's marriage is that "I never thought I'd be able to say 'Laurie got married' without adding 'and the baby came early!'". Also, when Red expresses his desire for a grandchild, Kitty remarks that Laurie probably has "a few" secret children. They laugh for a moment and then a serious expression comes to each of their faces. Eric believes that this has already happened (more than once), when he tells Laurie "I'm sure whatever bastard children you've had have been adopted by now" when Laurie says she wants to make up for her past mistakes. Laurie is shown to be (partially) good with kids in "Baby Fever", but it quickly becomes clear that she values material goods more (exchanging her hair-dryer for the baby).^[5]

Season 1[link]

Laurie appeared in a brief, recurring role in Season One. Kelso, despite being in a committed relationship with Jackie, flirted with (and attempted to seduce) Laurie.^[6] Laurie rejected his weak advances, but began flirting with him, and the two made out in "A New Hope", beginning their season-long affair.^[7] During Season One, Laurie was going to college in another city, and in the finale, she announces that she has flunked out. Season 2[link]

In the second season, now living in her parents' (and her brother Eric's) house, Laurie tricked Kelso into cheating on Jackie and soon everyone but Jackie knew. Kelso attempted to end what he had with Laurie multiple times, only to be threatened that if he ended it, she would tell Jackie everything. Then when he tried to end it again, Laurie agreed, as long as he gave her one last kiss. Kelso agreed, not knowing that Jackie was standing right behind him. This prompted Jackie to break up with him. Before the breakup, Laurie and Jackie had become friends, finding common interest in material things, like hair. During the third season, Laurie and Kelso began a serious relationship, although the majority of their "relationship" consisted of making out or leaving the room to "do it". After talking with Red, Laurie discovered what she wanted to do in life and soon enrolled in a beauty school. Kelso retained feelings for Jackie while it became increasingly apparent that his connection with Laurie was purely sexual. Later, on Valentine's Day, Kelso caught another man leaving Laurie's room. Crushed, Kelso ended the relationship. Season 5[link]

During the fifth season, Laurie returned for Thanksgiving and was revealed to be now living in Chicago. After accidentally letting it slip that she hadn't changed her promiscuous ways, she lost her spot as the favorite child. Later in the season, she returned with a supposed new outlook on life, wanting to make amends for all the mistakes she had made in the past and become closer to Eric and the rest of her family. She joins the gang on a camping trip they take to celebrate their high-school graduation, during which she sleeps with Fez. Fez, threatened with deportation due to his visa expiring, marries her so he can stay in the country. Season 6[link]

In the sixth season, newlywed Fez tries to trick Laurie into "doing it" as she refuses to consummate their marriage. Meanwhile, Red and Kitty attempt to force the two to divorce. However, when Fez and Laurie start to receive wedding presents that they do not want (such as a circular saw and a microwave), they decide to give the gifts to Red and Kitty, who grudgingly approve of their marriage out of their desire to receive more gifts. Laurie's last appearance was in "Going Mobile". In the sixth season episode "I'm Free", Eric jokes that Laurie's absence was due to being in jail before seriously asking where she had been the last two years. Seasons 7 and 8[link]

After season six, Laurie was never seen on-screen again but was mentioned in passing many times over the next two seasons. These ranged from explaining what she was doing at that point in time (such as moving to Canada), to her past in Point Place (such as who her godparents are).

Laurie's last screen reference is in the finale, where Kitty, after stating heartfelt reasons why she loved everyone in the room, including telling Donna that she loved her like a daughter, asks "Speaking of daughters... has anyone seen Laurie?" prompting a long laugh from the studio audience.^[9]

• Lisa Robin Kelly left the show in 2003, Laurie was removed entirely from the show and didn't appear for 47 episodes and wasn't mentioned for 43 episodes (though Red made references to having "kids"). Prior to that, Laurie was always mentioned as if she was still around although she wasn't on screen. For instance, on Valentine's Day, Kelso came by to give her flowers but he sees a man come out of her bedroom and he is heartbroken.
• Laurie has never appeared in a scene transition when she was a cast member, in the first season episode "Christmas" and in the fifth season episode "Nobody's Fault But Mine (2)". She was billed as a guest star in both episodes.
• Lisa Robin Kelly was set to return to the role for the sixth season for 13 episodes and be billed as a regular cast member again.^[10] However, she left the show soon after production began and was replaced with Christina Moore. The scenes featuring Laurie in the first episodes of the season were later re-shot and the character appeared in only six episodes, with Christina being billed as a guest star.

Lisa Robin Kelly made her debut in a 1992 episode of Married... with Children entitled "Kelly Doesn't Live Here Anymore". She appeared again on Married... with Children in 1997 in the episode "Breaking Up Is Easy To Do". She has also appeared in shows such as Murphy Brown, Charmed, The X-Files, Sisters, and Silk Stalkings, as well as straight-to-video and TV movies, such as Amityville: Dollhouse, Late Last Night and the movie Jawbreaker.

Kelly won the part of Laurie, the promiscuous elder sister of Eric Forman on That '70s Show. After three years, she left the show; it was explained that her character had left to attend beauty school.

She briefly returned to the show in the fifth season in four episodes, but was replaced with Christina Moore in the sixth season.

Since her departure from the show, Kelly appeared in a 2005 film called The Food Chain: A Hollywood Scarytale.

Legal troubles[link]

In August 2010 Kelly was arrested in North Carolina on a charge of driving while intoxicated.^[1] In November 2010 she pleaded guilty, was fined, and sentenced to 12 months unsupervised probation.^[2]

On March 31, 2012, Kelly was arrested at 12:50 AM on a felony charge of corporal injury upon a spouse, and was released on $50,000 bail.^{[3] [4]} After being released on bail, Kelly went onto her Facebook account to ask for money and to claim that her boyfriend's injuries were self-inflicted. She later made public statements claiming that she was set up by her boyfriend who injured himself in an effort to frame the actress as a domestic abuser.^[5] On April 4, 2012, she tweeted that she is "relieved the nightmare is over".^[6] On May 12, 2012, TMZ reported that the LA County DA declined to file charges, with John Michas refusing to co-operate with authorities playing a major role in the decision.^[7]

Robin Kelly served as chief of staff for former Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias from 2007-2010. She was the 2010 Democratic nominee for Illinois State Treasurer. As of December 2010, Robin Kelly serves as the Cook County Chief Administrative Officer.

Early life, education and career[link]

Born in New York, Kelly obtained her B.A. and her M.A. from Bradley University, and her Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University. While in Peoria in the 1980s, Kelly worked as a community activist.

Kelly has worked in public service^[vague] in Illinois for 25 years. She was Director of the Crisis Nursery at Crittenton Care and Counseling Center from 1984 through 1987, then Associate Director of The Youth Shelter from 1987 through 1990. From 1990 through 1992 she was Minority Student Services Director at Bradley University. From 1992 through 2006 she served as a Director of Community Affairs in Matteson. She is co-founder and past president of the Unity Coalition of the South Suburbs.

Kelly has served as a Commissioner on Human Rights in Cook County since 1998, and a Board Member of the Hate Crimes Commission since 2005. She has been a board member for the Rich Township Food Pantry since 1994 and the Illinois Theatre Center since 1993.

Kelly has been a Bradley University Trustee since 2003, and a board member of the Bradley University Council since 1998. In October 2009, Kelly was inducted into the University’s Centurion Society, an honored alumni group of respected leaders in their fields.

Illinois Legislature[link]

In 2002, Kelly challenged a 10-year incumbent Illinois state representative and was elected to the Illinois General Assembly in 2002. She served in the Illinois House of Representatives until 2007, representing Chicago’s south suburbs in the 38th District. She sponsored and co-sponsored numerous bills protecting victims of consumer fraud, supporting economic development, and improving mass transit. She also supported legislation to protect victims of domestic violence.

2010 Illinois Treasurer campaign[link]

Kelly ran for Illinois Treasurer as the Democratic nominee. but lost to Republican nominee Dan Rutherford. According to unofficial election results, Rutherford received 49.9% of the vote to Kelly's 45.1%.^[1] Other candidates in the race were Constitution Party nominee Dawn Czarny, Green Party nominee Scott K. Summers, Libertarian nominee James Pauly, and Independent Conservative Christopher Pedersen.

Katherine Anne "Kitty" Forman (née Sigurdson) is a fictional character on the Fox Network's That '70s Show, portrayed by comic actress Debra Jo Rupp. Kitty is a nurse but sometimes takes a break from her career to make peace in the family. She also has a very recognizable laugh (an accident on Debra Jo Rupp's part) and a fondness for square dancing. Kitty is in very many ways a typical 1970s wife and mother, putting her family first and always trying to smooth over the many conflicts within her household, although her efforts usually fail. She is a foster mother to the entire gang, and is a source of comfort and advice for them all.

About Kitty Forman[link]

Kitty is married to Red Forman (Kurtwood Smith). She is mother to daughter Laurie (portrayed first by Lisa Robin Kelly and later by Christina Moore), with whom she has a stressful relationship, and son Eric (Topher Grace), whom she has a habit of overprotecting, even to the point of saying that his girlfriend Donna Pinciotti seduced the "poor boy" and tricked him into having sex with her. ("Did she trick you into it? We will move you away! We won't play her game!") Unlike Red, Kitty also seems to enjoy Eric's friends hanging around the house, sometimes smothering them. One of Kitty's favorite pastimes is being a mother — making sandwiches, baking cookies, making fun of male ice skaters while having tea with Fez, and looking after children. She does not want Eric to move out, fearing that if he does, she will have no one to take care of. She convinced Red that the family should take in Steven Hyde (Danny Masterson) when Hyde's mother abandoned the teenager.

Kitty puts on a facade of a vacuous, cheerful, doting mother, with a passion for Kahlúa. Despite being a nurse and knowing the consequences of her actions, she is also a smoker, and has tried to quit more than once, but to no avail (Kitty's cigarette smoking was slowly phased out after season three, due to Debra Jo Rupp's quitting in real life). She has mentioned that she sometimes laughs when uncomfortable. Her mood swings are usually attributed to her menopause storyline. As Red puts down Eric and favors Laurie, Kitty puts down Laurie and favors Eric, mainly because Laurie is known to be loose and cares little, if at all, about school. In one episode, she flat out tells Laurie how ashamed she is of her. In clichéd fashion, she and her late mother-in-law, Bernice Forman, have a rocky relationship, throwing insults at each other in the guise of friendly, formal conversation, a "tradition" Kitty almost passed down to her would-be daughter-in-law, Donna. Though they mutually hate each other, Kitty does feel guilty about antagonizing her mother-in-law after she dies.

Kitty's parents are Bea and Burt Sigurdson (played by Betty White and Tom Poston). They live in Arizona but have appeared in a few episodes of the series that takes place in fictional Point Place, Wisconsin. Burt is a kind, laid back man who frequently tries to avoid his wife Bea, an aggressive, loud nightmare (usually by indulging in alcohol). Eric sums up their relationship as "Grandma yells, Grandpa drinks". To get away from Bea, Burt will occasionally step outside to have a cigarette, though he doesn't smoke. Whenever Bea is looking for Burt or trying to get his attention she will call his name soft and sweetly twice, to which Burt will ignore as if he hasn't heard her, Bea will then scream his name in a shrill blast of fury. She teaches this method to her grandson's girlfriend Donna but admonishes her for using it later saying "Donna, you catch more flies with sugar". Laurie proves to have inherited her grandmother's talent for shrill yelling. Eric confirms this by stating that "evil skips a generation." And Kitty believes that Laurie got her ways, not from her "but from my evil mother!"

In the episode "Your Time Is Gonna Come (a.k.a. Get Off My Boyfriend)" (which premiered on January 29, 2003), Burt and Bea arrive at the Forman's doorstep flat broke after Burt makes a financial blunder buying an ostrich farm next door to a coyote farm. At the end of the episode Burt is found by Eric unconscious on the driveway (having suffered a coronary after accidentally seeing Donna, Jackie in pajamas and Kelso's then girlfriend Annette in her underwear through Donna's bedroom window) and later dies in the hospital.

In season five, Kitty told Red that she was pregnant, only to go to the doctor who told her the reason why her periods had stopped was because she was beginning menopause. To help his wife through menopausal mood swings, Red got Kitty a Dachshund dog she named Schatzi (German for Little Treasure), who was phased out very early on only to be revealed to have been "under the porch" for months. A notable consequence of her menopause is that she drinks considerably more than she used to.

In the episode, "Kitty's Birthday (Is That Today!?)" Red states that Kitty's birthday is the 13th of whatever month it was. As it is snowing outside and it is after Christmas, her birthday would be in the first two or three months of the year. Also the episode occurs directly after the Valentine's day episode which would imply February. At the end of the episode, Red is checking off important dates and flips the January page after Eric mentions Kitty's birthday. Her maiden name implies that she is of Swedish descent. This is confirmed in "Streaking," where Kitty reveals that her grandmother was Swedish.

Kitty has a younger sister named Paula (Valerie Harper) who appeared in "Eric's Naughty No-No." Paula is a cosmetics sales-woman and very successful which makes Kitty jealous as Kitty was once the more successful one. After an argument about what each of them had that was better than the other, the sisters made up and Paula agreed to give Kitty a make-over that "It won't make me look like a whore, right?" Red, upon seeing this, is excited at Kitty's new look, hoping she'll get more intimate with him.

Kitty, despite being a kind, motherly figure to the gang, is still the subject of sexual attraction from Fez and Kelso (along with Midge). When Fez first met Kitty, instead of shaking her hand, he greeted her with a long kiss (and attempts to do the same to Red). Also, when Charlie says that he saw Kitty naked, Fez asks him what it looked like and said "and I am only asking because I find Miss Kitty attractive in a sexual way." Also, when Kelso and Brooke have a fight, Kelso comes to Eric, upset, telling him "I need a hug from your mom!". Eric finishes his conversation with Hyde and goes to "pull Kelso off my mother".

Although usually calm and kind, Kitty has been known to lose her temper on occasion. One notable example was in the episode "The Immigrant Song", when Kitty angrily asks Red what they will now do for the 4th of July with Eric gone. When Red says that there is a car show in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Kitty goes into a profanity-laden rage (Explicit profanity being bleeped out), ending with, "Way to go, DUMBASS!!"

Relationship with the Kids[link]

Unlike Red, Kitty enjoys having young people around her house. In way of her children, she plays favorites with Laurie and Eric. She thinks of Laurie as a screw-up and says she loves her "because I have to." She often tries to get through to Laurie, but most of the time has no luck and gives up. To her Eric is her baby, and she fears losing him to Donna, so she often babies him and is overprotective. Upon hearing of Eric losing his virginity (episode "The Parents Find Out") she stays in bed, depressed and angry at Donna, only leaving bed when Eric reminds her that he needs Kitty to protect him from Red. For a time she was sad that her children were growing up and expressed a desire for another baby, episode "Baby Fever", which Red was not happy about. She only resolved not having a baby when Red reminded her of grandchildren, which he has also forgotten. She proceeded to ask both Laurie and Eric about having kids, and decided that she wasn't excited for Laurie's children and couldn't wait for Eric's. When Eric and Donna announced that they were moving to Madison at the end of Season Five, Kitty suffered a nervous breakdown, exacerbated by Red's support of the plan. Later, when Eric planned to go to Africa in Season Seven, Kitty tried to sabotage his efforts by withholding food and information on immunizations. After he left at the start of Season Eight, Kitty briefly tried marijuana.

Maybe even more than Eric, Kitty is fond of Hyde, whom they took in after his mother left, leaving him nowhere to go. In the episode "Kitty's Birthday (Is That Today!?)" Hyde is the only one who remembers her birthday, and in the episode "Jackie Bags Hyde" Kitty is the one who helps Hyde realize he likes Jackie. Kitty treats Hyde as a second son even after he moves out of the Forman basement. In the series finale, she referred to him as "my second son." Although Eric has occasionally expressed his jealousy of Hyde for the supposed better treatment Hyde receives from Kitty and Red, it has never been a major issue, and Hyde and Eric behave more like brothers than friends throughout the series .

Kitty treats Eric's other friends Kelso, Fez and Jackie as her own children as well—she looks out for them and helps them out on numerous occasions throughout the series. For example, she taught the parenatal class Kelso and Brooke took before Betsy's birth, she attempted to teach Jackie how to bake on two occasions, and she behaves as a mother to Fez, who hasn't seen his real parents since his immigration. Being a nurse and a maternal figure, she is the one who treats the teenagers whenever they get physically injured (which happens quite often), especially Kelso. Kitty plays an active role in all the gang's private lives—for example, she is the one who orchestrated the talk between Jackie and her mother Pam in season 6. She is somewhat close to Donna, but as a competitor for Eric and as the daughter of her best friends. Kitty is astonished in how many times they "change partners" and is happy to have the people to care for, although she is not fond with the drama of having all of Eric's friends hang out at her house. Kitty seems to dislike anyone who questions her values, telling Jackie to "shut [her] dirty little mouth" when she referenced Kitty's drinking; and when Kelso asked if she'd ever smoked, she stared at him and Red made him leave.

Despite being a motherly figure to all of the teens, Kelso and Fez seem to have some sexual attraction towards her. Fez admits this to Charlie Richardson after he sees Kitty naked accidentally, asking what she looked like and saying "and I'm only asking this because I find Miss Kitty attractive in a sexual way." Also, after Kelso has a bad experience with his baby's mother, he tells Eric "I need a hug from your mom." Eric concludes his conversation with Hyde, leaving to "go pull Kelso off my mother". Also, Hyde, before his (technically not legal) adoption made him Kitty's son, demonstrated some attraction to Kitty, such as when she was teaching him dancing, he greatly enjoyed placing his hand in the small of her back, almost sexually so. As part of the plot of that episode, Bob sees them and assumes they are having an affair.

In Season 8, with Eric gone, she seemingly replaced him with Fez. Fez began dating a friend of hers and when she found out, snapped on him and demanded he break it off, to which he replied "You're not the boss of me!! You're not my mother!". Kitty took great offense to this and stormed off and made herself a blender full of alcohol. Donna and Jackie helped Fez realize that Kitty has been the closest thing he has to a mother, and she thinks of Fez as her own son. Fez makes up with Kitty afterward.

John Joseph Kelson Jr. (February 27, 1922 - April 28, 2012), better known by his stage name Jackie Kelso, was an American jazz saxophonist, flautist, and clarinetist.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Kelson was the eldest child of John Joseph Kelson Sr. and Lillian Weinberg Kelson.^[1] He started clarinet lessons at age eight, studying with Caughey Roberts. At fifteen, Jefferson High School classmate Chico Hamilton urged him to take up the alto saxophone, and he soon made his professional debut with Jerome Myart. By the time he graduated from Jefferson, he was playing with Hamilton, Buddy Collette, and Charles Mingus at clubs on Central Avenue.

In the 1940s he played with C.L. Burke, Barney Bigard, Marshal Royal, Lucky Thompson, Kid Ory, Benny Carter, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, and Roy Milton. In the 1950s he also performed with Johnny Otis, Billy Vaughan, Nelson Riddle, Bill Berry, the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut, Ray Anthony, Bob Crosby, and Duke Ellington. He worked as a studio musician between 1964 and 1984, in addition to recording with Mercer Ellington and Mink DeVille, touring worldwide with Hampton, Ellington, and Vaughan, and appearing in The Concert for Bangladesh. He quit music in 1984 to become a tourist, but returned to performance in 1995 with the Count Basie Orchestra, where he became a regular in 1998. He reverted to his birth name of Kelson that year as well. He died on April 28, 2012, in Beverly Hills, California.
