Taíno Documentary Part II (Lost History: Rediscovering the Taíno People)
Sound Design: Chadwick M. Hanes This is part of the Broadcast-length Taino movie for the Documentary Production class in the Indiana University Department of Telecommunications. I was not the Online Editor for this production; however I did do the sound design (music choice/placement/effect noises) of the original production. I have only a bad copy of the first half, so the second half was the only video salvageable. Sorry about the buffering issues as well. Taino Indians Counted Out Of Existence
There are those who self-identify as Taino Indians today and they are making sure that they are counted in the upcoming 2010 census. The Taínos were the original indigenous people of the Caribbean islands that include Puerto Rico and have long been considered historically extinct. Christopher Columbus encountered the Taínos during his maiden voyage to the New World and according to history books the natives were eventually exterminated by the Spaniards through slavery, mass killings and disease. Present day Taínos argue that they were not entirely killed off and that many of them escaped into the mountains and others intermarried with their conquerors and survived. The Neo-Taínos also claim that during the 1500s the Spanish colonizers did not use a fixed standard for counting people and that the enumerators intentionally reported inaccurate numbers of the Taínos decline to the Queen of Spain in order to get her permission to seek slaves from Africa to be able to continue their work. A 1798 census was done by the Spanish and they found more than 2000 inidans in San German, it also mentions another group of about the same numbers in Anasco barrio Miraflores contradicting earlier historical documents that claimed their extermination in the 1500s. In 1898 Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States during the Spanish-American War and the islanders were granted US citizenship in 1917. As the self-identified Taínos organize for the 2010 census they understand its significance ...

Beyond Extinction: Consciousness of Taíno and Caribbean Indigeneity
..." style="float: right; margin-right: -5px;">
In August of 2011 The Smithsonian hosted a symposium on the survival of Taíno language, identity and material culture in contemporary Caribbean consciousness. This symposium is part of the Taíno Legacy Project that explores the culture, history and legacy of the Native peoples of the Caribbean islands. In particular, this project will focus on the Taíno, the inhabitants of Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, who both greeted—then resisted—Columbus and his men during the first decades of Spanish colonization in the Americas. This project reflects one of the most important cultural encounters in world history. It provides perspectives on Taíno civilization before European contact using the Smithsonian's archeological collections, while demonstrating the enduring presence of a "consciousness of Taíno" on the islands—from domestic architecture, agriculture and spirituality to art, language and biology. "The term, extinction, as applied to a culture and its human community, is always troublesome," said Barreiro. "There is a persistent exuberance about 'Taíno,' in the islands and in their diasporic communities. This is what we are exploring." This project is a multiyear collaboration between the Smithsonian Latino Center, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. An exhibition and public program series on Taíno Legacy are currently under ...

WE ARE ISRAEL. (THE PEOPLE OF NEGROID AND INDIAN DESCENT) AZTEC, MAYAN, BORICUA AND TAINO INDIANS
(ZEPHANIAH 2:1-3) 1. Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; 2. Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD's anger come upon you. 3. Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD's anger.
