The grandson of a miner, went to Cambridge, received an almost unheard of degree, a double starred first in Greek and Latin. He became a professor at Sydney University at the age of 25, his first failure, as he did not beat Nietzsche's record of becoming a professor at 24. But as failures go that was rather modest. In 1939 he returned to Britain, enlisting as a private soldier. By 1945 he was a Brigadier, naturally the youngest to hold that rank in the British army, having made a significant contribution to the defeat of the Afrika Corps. He was elected a member of parliament in 1950, he served as an MP, for various constituencies, until 1985. He scared political foes and colleagues alike with the strength of his intellect, there was nobody he ever worked with who was his equal, throughout his entire life. It was almost certainly jealousy which lead to his demise, his enemies deliberately grabbed hold of the wrong end of the stick and used it to beat him with.
